To go swimming without shaving?

I am not a regular shaver. It's time consuming, occasionally itchy during regrowth and I hate myself for feeling like I have to conform to society's expectations plus I'm lazy I really want to take dd swimming more regularly but I really can't be bothered with maintaining a smooth bikini line and legs.

I am well aware that I wouldn't even be asking this if I was a man, but I can't shake the feeling that someone will be disgusted by my hair. I'm so annoyed that I feel like I have to remove part of my body to become an acceptable member of society.

Would you judge me for having hairy legs and hair around my bikini line? If you don't like shaving what do you wear swimming?

I am visually impaired so no worries with me. Unfortunately, I have never mastered being able to shave. I have gotten very shy since working in Asia though so always try to find swimsuits with A skirt, sorts or bra inserts.

ADisappearingDreamOfYesterday · 19/04/2017 18:49

I remember my DD1 at about 13, being worried about pubic hair being on view in her swimming cossie. Luckily it only lasted about a second, I asked her if she had ever noticed anyone else's, she said no, and stopped thinking about it.

Those who are declaring ewwww and think women should refrain from wilfully exposing their pubic hair, does this also apply to young women like my DD - at that age still a child. Or is it OK for children to wilfully have their pubes hanging out on display and inflicting them on others?

All this language and these expressions ^^ are direct quotes from this thread. Personally they make me feel extremely uncomfortable when applied to young girls, but this is the exact attitude of certain people on this thread, and the message which they are passing onto our DC.

Now that is what people should be ashamed of. Not body hair - which we all have and is completely natural and not something to feel ashamed of.

ADisappearingDreamOfYesterday · 19/04/2017 18:49

Sorry about the errant italics, I hate they don't show on preview on the app!

brassbrass · 19/04/2017 19:20

does your DD show her pubes at other times when she's around other members of the public? Do you encourage it?

No? Didn't think so!

howrudeforme · 19/04/2017 19:25

I'm a woman so I have body hair. I have Pcos so I have a lot of thick hair plus I'm of Asian origin and one of those who has even more hair.

You'd see my hair from a long way off. For this reason and the fact that so many women (forget men) find their own sisters abhorrent, I haven't been in water for decades.

and all the emotive language is a bit hysterical. Ashamed!

In the real world people don't walk around with your pubes out. Most people are discrete.

brassbrass · 19/04/2017 19:30

howrude that is sad have you explored cossies that might work for you?

TheLuminaries · 19/04/2017 19:40

In the real world people don't walk around with your pubes out.

Indeed, but in the real world, some pubes may be visible on the outside edges of a man or woman's swimwear. So what? What is the big fucking deal? It is hair - same as that on your head, eyebrows, legs, arms, face wherever. Totally natural hair.

People who can;t handle a few stray pubes are the hysterical ones. In fact, even noticing is odd and a bit creepy. Stop looking at people's crotches and get on with your own swim!

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2017 19:44

TheLuminaries

You can hide behind your keyboard, keep on attacking, calling names and insulting all you wish for the simple fact I or anyone else may have an opinion which differs to yours,

It Is not going to either stop any of us posting nor give us a desire to see some strangers pubes or make us want to get ours out in public. You fill your boots though and get yours out with pride down your local pool.

Just don't post the pictures, I think we could do without that.

brassbrass · 19/04/2017 19:44

I think we're getting a picture of who the hysterical ones are Hmm

TheLuminaries · 19/04/2017 19:48

Smirking at the 'hiding behind keyboard' jibe - what else are you meant to do on an internet forum? We are all typing behind keyboards, so it is a completely redundant comment.

I haven't attacked or called anyone names, I have pointed out odd and creepy behaviour in relation to other people's bodies. Do you see the difference - criticising the behaviour not the person?

If you don't want to see strangers pubes, don't look. It really is that simple.

Flyinggeese · 19/04/2017 19:48

Meanwhile in the real world, and I swim fairly frequently, the vast majority of people do not have pubic hair on show at the pool.

I completely agree with those saying we (women) should not feel obliged to shave but to answer the OP properly I would be lying if I said go for it, nobody will mind or notice. They will certainly notice. Some will even think 'eew' :) Personal choice what to do though of course.

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2017 19:49

*odd prude"

Not an attack in your view.? Okdoke.

TheLuminaries · 19/04/2017 19:51

I said I didn't give a shit for the opinion of odd prudes, and I don't.

I didn't call you an odd prude, but if you think the cap fits, go ahead and wear it (it will cover your hair).

brassbrass · 19/04/2017 19:52

Bluntness I doubt very very much that she actually has a flagrant rug hanging out of her cossie. But as you say it's easy to blag from the safety of a keyboard.

halobean · 19/04/2017 19:53

I go swimming, pubes, arm pit hair, hairy legs... the full works. I couldn't give a monkies who think I am disgusting. What a weird world we live in where people call each other disgusting for just being how they are meant to be. By all means, make yourself look pre pubescent, but you won't make me conform. Life is too short to waste it doing things you don't want to do and I don't remove all my hair from the neck down thanks.

halobean · 19/04/2017 19:57

I am not going to post a photo, but you can't tell where my leg hair starts and my pubes begin. I go swimming 2 or 3 times a week. I also wear skirts and vest tops. The world hasn't stopped turning yet. Also my dh and all my exs didn't seem to care. In fact when I lived in Bristol, it was more common amongst my friends to not shave than shave. It really isn't a massive deal.

frazzlebedazzle · 19/04/2017 19:58

I take dd swimming weekly. I do aim to defuzz but it actually happens maybe once every 3-6 months these days? Blush

Not even a moral decision, just pure laziness/lack of time BlushBlush

halobean · 19/04/2017 20:04

Exactly frazzle. I just don't want to, I can't be arsed, seems a waste of time to me. The feminist issues is secondary to me, but it is still an important thing to think about. I just mostly don't see the point.

PacificDogwod · 19/04/2017 20:53

Oh, do whatever you are comfortable with.

I have swum all my life, at one point competitively.
I have gone from not caring about body hair (being Continental-Forrin and all that, you know, I just did not consider body hair anything that needed anything doing to it) to obsessive removing it pretty much (because it makes you oh so much faster in the water not) to now doing the odd bit of trimming as the mood takes me.

Otoh if you wore this suit nobody would focus on your pubes Grin

It always amazes me how emotive these threads end up - what do I care what anybody else dose with their hair?

Oblomov17 · 19/04/2017 21:06

Stopped shaving many years ago. Now just give an occasional trim with a beard trimmer. Brilliant. Zero stinging or pain.

Oblomov17 · 19/04/2017 21:11

Still, after all these years, still love the smack the pony clip.

HelenaDove · 19/04/2017 21:24

howrude My legs are hairy at the moment. I used to have them waxed but the last time was just before Xmas 2015. Cant afford it. And i dont like shaving.

I have my hair professionally coloured instead I have a lot of grey, And my head is on show My legs arent. I sometimes wear trousers but wear tights when i wear skirts.

Thats not the reason why i no longer swim though. I dont want the chlorine to fuck up my dye job. My hair is long and thick and there is no way i would get it all under a swim cap.

howrude I am of Italian origin and my hair is dark and thick.

My life was made a misery at school by two particular girls because my mum wouldnt let me shave. Because in her culture its not done.

Had i known back then this could be classed as racist bullying as well as misogynistic i would have reported it as such . The bloody teachers knew damn well though.

I certainly wouldn't look or care.
