AIBU to not understand why "normal" people vote Tory?

OK, so I'll probably get flamed for this but am genuinely interested! All the people I know who vote Tory are pretty well off so use private schools and healthcare. As a family we need the NHS and we need a good education system - and I can't see them getting any better under the Tories. Are these just not priorities for Tory voters or do they really believe they will improve even with a Conservative government?

Here we go MN is off saying how 'ignorant' people that vote for the torys are. Straight in with the name calling/put downs but are the first to complain if the other side of the fence do the same to them Hmm. Fwiw I am not a tory voter. I dislike all of the bastards but this really pisse me off

derxa · 21/04/2017 11:29

I also think May is making a mistake in ignoring angry remainers. That group is lessening. Apathy is setting in.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 11:34

It's not wrong to be annoyed that people are voting for a party who is dismantling and destroying everything about the UK that makes it a desirable country to live in.

People may not give a shit about disabled people if you don't have a disabled family member. But what about the plans to return to a Grammar school system for example? No school will want to be a secondary modern. So children not able to pass the 11+ will be stuck with 'undesirable' school choices. Anyone with a child at primary school should be concerned about this.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 11:36

And those who don't care about social care issues - you should hope you never succumb to dementia or anyone else in your family. It's not a rare disease sadly. It worries me that people are so short sighted.

makeourfuture · 21/04/2017 11:51

Absolutely Lottie!

xForsythia · 21/04/2017 12:02

it's not wrong either to get annoyed by people who vote labour, who elected labour and brought the country to its knee and are still voting labour despite having proof of how negative they are.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 12:21

It's not an either or situation. The conservatives screw over anyone who needs to use any kind of public service.

JanetBrown2015 · 21/04/2017 12:53

Or ensuring the continuation of those public services by ensuring we can continue to pay for them whilst Labour spend spend spend and thus ensure those resources will not exist in future. It is a fairly simple choice and I bet May will win. Good.

Headofthehive55 · 21/04/2017 12:56

Unfortunately living in a labour council area meant that services were "redistributed" to wards where they favoured, leaving many without. I don't see labour as actually being good with services.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 12:59

JB - none of your posts make any sense whatsoever. What eveidence do you have that the Conservatives are going to make sure the NHS continues? The NHS is currently in its worst state ever. The Conservatives don't want the NHS to continue. They want it to cease to exist.

When parts of the council are off to private companies, for example our education services has been sold to a defence company, the service they give will become worse and worse because the company is trying to make a profit as well as deliver the service.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 13:03

Surely that depends on your MP headof. I still can't get my head around voting for the Tories because' Labour wasn't any good'. Labour made plenty of mistakes but at no point in the past has the NHS ever been as close to non existence as it is now. I'm not even a labour supporter naturally

People need to take their heads out of the sand.

Headofthehive55 · 21/04/2017 13:06

I don't think the nhs is in the worst state ever.
Recently road tested it, excellent. On time, clean, efficient.
What outcome measures do you have that says its worse?

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 13:09

I know people who have managerial positions in the NHS who say it's about to collapse.

Just because everything looks ok to you doesn't mean it is. There are areas of the UK where people who have children with complex needs now have to wait 18 months for a hospital appointment since their services have been sold to Virgin.

AnotherDayAnothetDollar · 21/04/2017 13:11

I have said this on a similar thread. I have accessed A&E and GP services recently and I can't fault any of them. Family members in various parts of the country have also accessed services as well and they have had the same experience. I don't find the NHS is terrible at all.

AnotherDayAnothetDollar · 21/04/2017 13:14

So conservative voters are told by others that they should not believe what they read etc but we have to then believe your third hand account of how rubbish the NHS is rather than go on first hand experiences. Plus many years ago I did work for the NHS when labour was in power and quite frankly people moaned about it then.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 13:14

Just because you've been to the doctor recently and all was well you really think everything is A ok? Really? If you ever need an operation or anything costly you may find it's a different story.

darceybussell · 21/04/2017 13:16

Would someone be able to explain this 'conservatives want to shut down/privatise the NHS' please? Is it in their manifesto?

MsHooliesCardigan · 21/04/2017 13:16

Head Jeremy Hunt himself recently admitted that the state of the NHS is unacceptable which is politician speak for 'falling apart'. I've been a mental health nurse for 20 years and the NHS is unrecognisable compared to when I started- and not in a good way. The fact that you, personally, had a good experience doesn't mean that everything is hunky dory - you only have to watch the news to see what's happening.

AnotherDayAnothetDollar · 21/04/2017 13:17

Some of the recent experiences involved hospital visits and one relative underwent an operation so yes I will take mine and my extended families first hand experiences over someone else's third hand account.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 13:17

The NHS is not rubbish. But it can't run properly if it's all sold off to private companies.

ShatnersWig · 21/04/2017 13:19

I think, like most public services, it depends hugely where you live.

I have a fabulous GP surgery, never had to wait more than 2 days for an appointment and everyone raves about them. I know many people in other areas that say they can't get appointments for weeks.

I have two large hospitals near me. One is superb, one is appalling, and yet both run by the same NHS Trust. Go figure.

That is not to say there aren't problems, because there clearly are - in some places. But that has ALWAYS been the case, no matter who was in Government and how much funding was available.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 13:24

This is not possibly going to happen - it's happening already. Keep your head in the sand if you like. If you don't believe it that's up to you. I've seen photos of letters that people have been sent from the NHS telling them their service has been sold to virgin. I'm not going to post them here because they're not my photos.

My daughter's social worker told me that the government have plans to sell social services to a private company also.

AnotherDayAnothetDollar · 21/04/2017 13:27

I agree that I think local management of NHS services should be scrutinised more but I don't agree that the conservatives are destroying the NHS.

I have also had to access adult social care recently for a family member and again overall it was ok. Yes you have to fill out forms and there are procedures to follow but I fully expect to have to do that when you are accessing services.

lottieandmia · 21/04/2017 13:29

The NHS will cease to exist and we will end up having to pay for everything like in the US.

AnotherDayAnothetDollar · 21/04/2017 13:32

I disagree that it will cease to exist but I think it will and should evolve as times change. Lots of people are always wary about change but change can be good.
