AIBU to not understand why "normal" people vote Tory?

OK, so I'll probably get flamed for this but am genuinely interested! All the people I know who vote Tory are pretty well off so use private schools and healthcare. As a family we need the NHS and we need a good education system - and I can't see them getting any better under the Tories. Are these just not priorities for Tory voters or do they really believe they will improve even with a Conservative government?

ifart

Shes not hard to spot is she Grin

HelenaDove · 20/04/2017 18:27

Bill She didnt lose her tax credits. They were suspended for several weeks because she did some extra hours. So dont be disingenuous. She showed me the letter they sent her. I saw it in black and white.

Read any tax credits thread on here and you will see what a bloody shambles it is.

And im going to throw these two words into the thread because they havent been mentioned yet..................................................

Virgin Care!

upperlimit · 20/04/2017 18:30

Xenia, surely not. Even Xenia wouldn't post on a thread on the reasons why normals might vote for the Conservatives from the comfort of her own private island?

BillSykesDog · 20/04/2017 18:30

They wouldn't suspend them either. There is a £2k disregard so doing a few extra hours one week would make zero difference.

HelenaDove · 20/04/2017 18:31

Bill It happened Im not making it up.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 20/04/2017 18:33

I have heard that before as well helena

HelenaDove · 20/04/2017 18:37

YY Rufus Just because they are not SUPPOSED to do it does not mean that they dont.

Justanotherlurker · 20/04/2017 19:43

Well if anecdotes are ok then I personally know colleagues who have turned down extra hours because they like the downtime to themselves whilst there children are at school.

Also I would add as another anecdote that how MN blew up when the reduced cap came in. Although there where some genuine stories, it is undeniable to say that a fair few posters had built there life around the accessibility of tax credits and the amount they received and made life choices around it.

Bobbybobbins · 20/04/2017 19:56

I think the point that very few people agree with all a party's policies is very true. People's most important issues and possibly the leader of the party are most significant in affecting a vote. As a teacher, I cannot get behind the Tory's education and health proposals. However, issues such as taxation and crime are less significant for me.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 20/04/2017 20:00

Ds1 has just joined the lib dems

He is paying the minimum membership fee (he is his fathers son)

But he is all signed up

Sallystyle · 20/04/2017 20:03

I often do extra hours at work than I said I would do on my TC form.

I will probably have an over-payment. I have never heard of anyone having their TC messed up for working a few extra hours one week.

I don't know why that happened to your friend but it certainly hasn't happened to anyone I know. Talking to the TC people about it myself it really shouldn't be a problem.

stumblymonkeyreturns · 20/04/2017 20:57

The Tory voters I know vote for them for a variety of reasons:..

  • They are anti-EU and therefore more aligned with Tory backbenchers who were anti-EU and/or they wanted the referendum
  • They don't believe the other parties have the experience to run the country; they don't see other parties as a 'safe pair of hands' in terms of the economy
  • They blame Labour (rightly or wrongly) for the huge economic deficit
  • They are anti-immigration and therefore see themselves as more aligned with Tory policies on immigration caps
  • They don't believe in much of a welfare state, or believe that welfare is out of control (again rightly or wrongly) and so vote for Tory policies on benefit caps and similar
  • They don't want their taxes to be raised which they assume will happen under other parties

Not a Tory voter myself (new Lib Dem member) but I've tried to be as neutral as I can.

pushingthroughcracks · 20/04/2017 21:20

For all the

Evil scum Tory / racist brexit posts it is worth politely pointing out being anti eu is a labour stance.

lottieandmia · 20/04/2017 21:31

'Vote conservative' ODFOD. Why is it that PBP keep coming back under different names. You were banned - take the hint and do one.

alreadytaken · 20/04/2017 21:39

well we ought to be Tory voters according to this thread - comfortably off and old but neither disabled nor sick. Undecided about who to vote for but it will most definitely not be tory.

Why - well we are not fooled by tory lies. They are not good for the economy - havent paid off the deficit and it was only bad under Labour because of the banking crisis, a crisis caused by people who are unlikely to have voted Labour. If Gordon Brown had still been chancellor he'd have sold off the banks and paid down that debt by now.

Taking money from the poor - who spend it in their local economies - to give to the rich, who spend it on foreign holidays - is never good for the economy. The private sector screws up just as often as the public sector (G4S and the Olympics, anyone?) if not more. Private healthcare will cost more and deliver less.

There is, unfortunately, not a great choice of opposition but cant vote for a party who are bad for the economy and would prefer to kill off anyone who needs a bit of support.

BMW6 · 20/04/2017 22:07

Ah yes, it's the Slaughter of the Innocents week in, week out isn't it....

Devilishpyjamas · 20/04/2017 22:09

It's pretty bad for those who are severely disabled TBH BMW6. Unfortunately many don't realise just how bad.

Anon1234567890 · 20/04/2017 22:13

Corbyn didn't send his children to private school, his ex-wife did against his will.this was a reason for their divorce. Stop smear campaign based on inaccurate information

He married her, if he didn't know her views he is an idiot. If he divorced her just because of them, then he is a bastard.

mellicauli · 20/04/2017 22:22

Ermm..the school Corbyn's children went to is not private. It's a grammar school in the state sector. My son goes there.

lottieandmia · 20/04/2017 22:24

Quite Devilish. Some people think they're immune to disability Hmm
