To ask how you stay fit

ADayGivingMeHope · 18/04/2017 15:28

I like food!
But I also like to stay fit so I have to work out very regularly.
My workout routine isn't fun. At. All.

What do you do to stay fit?

I go spinning 2-3 time a week, bodypump (a weights class) once or twice a week, and the occasional run. I also walk quite a lot during the day for my job which I think helps too.

I've also just signed up to Les Mills On Demand which I've actually been so impressed with, and want to start fitting in a bodycombat class or two at home using that. They also do a yoga/Pilates type of thing called Body Flow or something like that, I think? Which I think I need to try as despite being reasonably fit I'm definitely not as flexible as I'd like!

Iamblossom · 18/04/2017 16:52

Oh and I am training for a 100km walk and do 25km walks about twice a month. Forgot about those...

planning a 40km one this weekend. Shock

nellifurtardo · 18/04/2017 16:55

I walk every where as I haven't got a car. I would say I do a minimum of 30mins walking a day. I'm also self employed so I work really hard and long hours, mostly standing or using machinery that requires a lot of arm movement. I really haven't got time to go to the gym but when I did I used to do yoga and spinning. I often have over 10000 steps on my step counter thingy on my phone on a daily basis.

Tillymintsmama · 18/04/2017 17:02

Sirzy & Ghosty yes, thanks for that.... I do try to tell myself I'm lapping everyone on the couch a la the "this girl can" ads....Wink

MoonriseKingdom · 18/04/2017 17:03

Pre kids I did either classes (e.g. body combat, body attack) or exercise DVDs (e.g. Jillian Michaels) 4 x a week. Now have a 2.5 yr old and a 6 month old. With 2 difficult pregnancies and c-section deliveries I hadn't done anything for a while. For the last month I have been exercising about 4x per week with a Davina DVD and am building up my fitness again. Once I get going I really enjoy it. I was thinking of giving Les Mills on demand a go as there is a 30 day free trial. Thanks Freida for the positive review.

goingonabearhunt1 · 18/04/2017 17:03

I always feel lazy reading these threads.

All I do is walking, yoga and swimming.

I walk to and from work (so at least an hour every day), then usually a bigger walk/hike on a Saturday. I do a yoga class on a Thursday and also have a yoga DVD which I try and do at home at least once a week (ocassionally manage twice). I also swim for 30-40 mins on a Wednesday.

Probably the only reason I'm not enormous is all the walking and carrying due to lack of car.

neverblue · 18/04/2017 17:07

I do cross fit and parkour. Lots of fun and really sociable. I do yoga as well but I think that's more for flexibility than fitness. We also walk a lot daily as we don't have a car.

caterpuller · 18/04/2017 17:08

Gym 5 - 6 days a week. Mixture of HIIT, classes (pump, circuits, spin) and working out on my own. Try to get out for a run once a week. I keep an eye on my food and drink intake but am pretty relaxed. Luckily I"m not a snacker and don't have a very sweet tooth, and tend to only eat 2 meals a day most week days due to not being able to eat pre-workout therefore breakfast and lunch tend to merge in to one meal. I love working out, but don't spend hours in the gym. HIIT and circuits at my gym are 30 minute classes, occasionally I'll do 10 - 15 minutes of cardio on top of that but don't often have the time. I also walk everywhere, and spend my 30 minute lunch break at work out walking and listening to podcasts or music.

frieda909 · 18/04/2017 17:09

MoonriseKingdom you're welcome! I really like it (I promise I don't work for them or anything!) I've never been into fitness DVDs at all before so I was really sceptical, but I was away with family for a few days over Easter and didn't want to give up exercising completely so I thought I'd give it a go. I did the most recent BodyCombat release and my god, I was sweating like crazy! And was properly sore the next day (but the good kind of sore, if you get what I mean!) which convinced me I was getting a really good workout. I might try a BodyBalance one tonight and see how I get on.

There is a post-pregnancy section on there too which I imagine would be perfect for you!

CaulkheadNorth · 18/04/2017 17:09

Rock climbing or bouldering at least once a week.

Cycling 2-3 times a week for fun, and usually one LONG cycle every fortnight.

Gym if I feel like it, which is pretty rare.

A lot of walking. I make sure I've done 12,000 steps every day.

SapphireStrange · 18/04/2017 17:11

Yoga and Zumba. The latter is great because it's fun and doesn't feel like exercise, but makes you really sweat and tones you up a treat. I'm much stronger and fitter since I started still have two left feet though

loveka · 18/04/2017 17:19

Zumba! It's such good fun but also gets your heart rate up and burns loads of calories.

I have started Pilates recently and wish I had done it years ago.

I go to the gym or do a class at least 4 days a week.

Testarossa1 · 18/04/2017 17:23

I don't know how everyone fits all that in, or has the energy .I work 3 days a week, 7.30 - 6.30pm, with a 45 minute commute on either end of the day. I manage one gym session after work. On my days off I swim one day and gym the other. My job involves a lot of walking, approx 10 - 12k steps a day. I find that exhausting enough over a week. I'd love to run, as it's free and literally on your doorstep, but I have flat feet, so end up with shin splints and bad knees if I do (even on a treadmill!) I have found I enjoy exercising with free weights, so only do cardio for first 15-20 mins, then exercises with weights. Think that's the key, finding something you enjoy doing.

Sirzy · 18/04/2017 17:28

Testra - if you want to run properly fitted shoes/insoles should make it possible

frieda909 · 18/04/2017 17:37

I have flat feet too, but I've been fitted for some good shoes at a running shop and I can run fairly well now (although I've never been fast, I'll always be a slow plodder!)

needastrongone · 18/04/2017 17:37

I am a running nutter Grin

I run 5 times a week, 3 easy runs, 1 x speed, one x long run for 12/14 miles.

Also, I do Boot Camp and have a PT session. These are for core strength and upper body, to prevent injury.

I have 2 spaniels so they need a lot of walking, about 4 miles a day at least.

I eat fairly clean too but I am very much in the 'everything in moderation' camp. I tried using MFP for these last few months but I've deleted the app. Highly effective at making you focus on what actually goes into your mush but easy to get obsessed.

This is all after being sidelined for 6 years due to injury. Being fit and healthy is such a buzz. I also like pushing the pain barrier a bit too so will try stupid hilly trail races, mega long runs, serious fast road races etc. Taught me a lot about what pain I can take (or thought I couldn't take iyswim?).

Yes I am very slim and clothes look much better, but it was never about that, it's an added bonus though.

edengarden123 · 18/04/2017 18:02

40 mins x twice a week weights in gym

I'm at my lowest weight ever and feel confident in a bikini.

It's difficult with small kids to get going and I know if I could double my time I'd have a really good body.

Weights gets me really good results quite quickly. I love it!

Thingsgettingstranger · 18/04/2017 18:03

I walk a lot. Play football. Light weights. I also have the Nike fitness app which is free and it can create you a workout plan (workouts are on the app too) to help you get fit. I try to eat well, and drink lots of water.

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 18/04/2017 21:02

You've all inspired me to dig out my trainers & my Fitbit & get moving!

Sammysquiz · 18/04/2017 21:40

I also really recommend Les Mills on demand - Body Pump's my favourite, but they're all really effective workouts.

frieda909 · 18/04/2017 22:08

Sammysquiz can I ask what equipment you have for the On Demand BodyPump workouts? I was looking at the Les Mills online store but the full set of Bodypump equipment was something like £350 and I'm not sure I'm quite ready for that level of financial commitment yet!

dimdommilpot · 18/04/2017 22:12

I run 2 to 3 times a week and also do a trampolining keep fit class 1 to 2 times a week. I enjoy both.

BoomBoomsCousin · 18/04/2017 22:14

I try to walk most places. I do an hour aerobic exercise 3 times a week and weights twice a week and (and this is what really keeps the weight off) I watch my portion size. I love food too, but I find I can pretty much enjoy it just the same if I eat half of a thing as if I eat the whole thing, so that's what I do with most of the delicious but high cal things that tempt me. I still eat a lot though.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 18/04/2017 22:18

I also don't have a car, so it's bike or walk to get around.

Do a bit of yoga in my living room (yoga with Adrienne on youtube) when I can and run once a week with a friend.

lastqueenofscotland · 18/04/2017 22:18

Something like
Monday: 6 mile run
Tuesday: gym before work / track session in the evening
Wednesday: Spin after work
Thursday: 3 miles run before work yoga after work
Friday: nothing - maybe 10/15 mins of core work
Saturday: parkrun
Sunday: long run (10+)

Looks completely insane written down, but I love it and run competitively for a club, so needs must!

I also try to eat well...
