Who to vote for in General Election?

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 12:20

Aargh.

Would normally vote for Lib Dems (feel like I should apologise for this!), and voted for them in the last two elections. In an ideal world, I'd vote for them or Labour, but I'm not keen on Jeremy Corbyn's (or Tim Farron's) leadership. Really don't want to vote Conservative.

Wondering perhaps about voting for the Women's Equality Party? They seem pretty good, but are still quite a small party.

What does everyone else think?

alfie if you don't mind me asking, what did you vote in 2015?

HPFA · 18/04/2017 15:18

If you're not a Tory voter you know what they're doing to the country and the only way to stop that is to vote tactically no matter what FEELS you might have against Corbyn or Farron or the Green's.

Totally agree. Easy for me as I'm in a Tory/LD marginal so the answer is obvious.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 18/04/2017 15:19

I absolutely refuse to back the Corbyn fanclub.

Me too

Thisisouting · 18/04/2017 15:19

I've already seen someone on my Facebook who normally votes Labour saying they are voting tory because of Brexit

LouisevilleLlama · 18/04/2017 15:33

Will there be TV debates again? Or is it literally people voting as they feel now?

PerkingFaintly · 18/04/2017 15:35

Ahh, thank you Red.

I hadn't got there was a connection between enshrining EU Law into British law, and Henry VIII clauses (which I'd previously learnt about from your threads).

LouisevilleLlama · 18/04/2017 15:44

( not the most political person so this may be dumb) if they didn't want brexit wouldn't labour be better ?

tygr · 18/04/2017 15:44

Haha great autocorrect.

"We are a lib dem safe seat so, will most likely be voting for them - spoiled my ballet at the last one."

Nutcracker suite?

ShatnersWig · 18/04/2017 15:46

Alan Johnson just announced he's not standing again. So that's two Labour MPs not standing this time so far.

LemonRedwood · 18/04/2017 15:53

LadyPW

If you can't make up your own mind on who to vote for you probably shouldn't be voting at all....

Are people not allowed to use discussion and debate in order to make up their own minds? Because we all know how truthful political campaigns are!

Thisisouting · 18/04/2017 15:55

No they voted leave so want Brexit, voting tory for full on hard Brexit

Neolara · 18/04/2017 16:03

I'll be voting Lib Dem. I imagine our Lab MP will get a total kicking this time round (not because he is particularly bad, but because of Corbyn) and that the Lib Dem candidate will sweep to an easy victory. It was very tight call between Libs and Lab last election and this area had one of the strongest remain votes in the country.

Wando1986 · 18/04/2017 16:08

People that vote tactically need shooting. In the face. With a potato catapult.

You know how you end up with the same 'big three' of which ALL are pretty useless? By voting tactically...

How fucking daft.

Wando1986 · 18/04/2017 16:10

Louise, no. Corbyn wants brexit, he agrees with it, just not some of the terms.

aprilanne · 18/04/2017 16:11

its a hard vote because most mp,s in scotland are snp and no way will i be voting them .

ButteredCrumpetNow · 18/04/2017 16:19

I live in a very safe Tory stronghold and am used to disappointment, but I will plod on regardless

Thisisouting · 18/04/2017 16:20

You end up with the big 3 because they have a majority support if you don't want a tory government you need to vote for the candidate with the best chance of winning the seat in your area.

The green party or WEP aren't going to suddenly sweep the board Hmm you'll just be wasting your vote unless your happy for dictator May to continue ruining the education and health care systems in this country over the next 5 years while smug in the knowledge you voted in line with your principles

SherlockPotter · 18/04/2017 16:25

@Thisisouting I disagree, it isn't a wasted vote at all. You're still voting whether the party is in the majority or not. Abstaining or spoiling the vote is wasting your vote though.

MycatsaPirate · 18/04/2017 16:30

We had a libdem MP here for years and then she resigned and a local councillor stood in her place who was also very well known here. For reasons unknown we now have a conservative MP who I have never seen at all, is not local and as far as I know has never been here.

Our local councillor will be standing again and I hope that the area gets behind her. She at least has this community at heart and has pushed for youth services, campaigns to keep bus services running etc.

Thisisouting · 18/04/2017 16:33

If you are in a swing seat or a safe tory seat and you vote for a minority party you are diluting the vote so it's a waste if you don't want a tory government or a hard Brexit.

aprilanne · 18/04/2017 16:34

i think if we want rid of the tories we just have to swallow or pride and vote labour .that includes scotland to because what is the point in snp mps they make no difference to the overall standing .a vote for snp here is just letting the tories in .as an article on the news said basically ireland and scotlands votes count for nothing in the leadership race as much as it pains me to admit this its true

HPFA · 18/04/2017 16:35

Under FPTP voting tactically is the only way to make your vote count a lot of the time.

It's slightly worrying how few people are going to vote for ANY party because they really believe in that particular one. And because of local councils having very little power those who don't like whatever party is in power will be pretty well helpless. I'm beginning to see a future where people really do lose a lot of faith in democracy. Scary.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 16:37

Shame about Alan Johnson not standing :( he was a decent MP, I thought.

MyCatShatInAHat · 18/04/2017 16:38

I'm in a Tory safe seat, never voted Tory and never will, especially as I have 2 disabled children. I will be voting lib dem.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 18/04/2017 16:51

I think that there will be a few Labour MPs that won't stand again.

I admire Tom Blenkinsop. He has stood by what he believes.
