AIBU?

To be a bit annoyed at this supermarket worker?

Went to the local Tesco Express and had waited ages in the queue (it was very busy and I do appreciate that) but I finally got to the till and was being served by a young girl (could be anywhere between 16-26) and it was going fine, but then some lady came up and was putting her items on the till too, I said I was still being served and she just said "yes" and she didn't speak very good English, so it was quite hard to explain. The girl on till said the same thing and told her to please pick up her items while she serves me, but the lady still didn't move and so the worker just kept on serving me? She left the other lady's items there and didn't attempt to move them and didn't ask the lady to move and there were 4 other tills empty so could have moved over to serve me?

AIBU?

WTF? Nothing actually happened, however there was the potential ....

A) The young shop assistant could accidentally scan one of the mystery woman's items!
B) The mystery woman was so close she could read your pin.
C) The mystery woman spoke English but didn't want to move her shopping so deceived you.
D) The young assistant stopped serving you and moved the woman's shopping and caused confrontation and delayed your purchase.
E) The young assistant moved you and your shopping to another till which would be another AIBU as that would have taken a long time.
or
F) The young shop assistant age 16 - 26 asked the woman to move and when she did not she carried on serving you and you left the shop.

I'm sure there are more scenarios, if you really want to overthink it ...Hmm

I'd love to read the young cashiers AIBU

"Today at work someone got confused and stood at the wrong side of my checkout queue and a the woman I was serving was still complaining about it hours later...AIBU to tell customers to get a feckin grip?"

Where did you want the woman's stuff moved to?

Another Tesco Express, 100 miles away Grin

OP. The assistant couldn't have done more than she did. Even if she could, she'd have more than likely got into trouble for it. Let it go.

Ha, my DS works in a supermarket. It's just the sort of thing he would come home and laugh about.

YABVU. You can't just move tills, as has already been explained.

Her age is not important. She handled the situation professionally, which judging by your attitude, is more than you would have done.

Your ignorance on the matter shows you have never worked in retail, and therefore have no right to be criticising anyone who does.

If this is all you have to worry about you are very fortunate indeed Confused. The checkout assistant took your side, served you without causing problems with either party. Yet you still complain.

???? Wtf OP. Get a grip! I thought you were going to say she served the other lady first! What did you want her to do? Obtain Bernard's watch to go off and learn the intruders native tongue to enable her to come back and tell said intruder to not stand beside you?!!! Confused

What?! Where do you live? Every bloody supermarket was closed where I live. I travelled in a 5 mile radius of my house and NOTHING was open. Only Burger King and the cinema. I had to buy expensive cinema popcorn and drinks 😡.

I'm not seeing what the problem was?

I work in Asda, on customer services, but I can cover the entire front end services (checkouts, self scan machines, kiosk for lottery/cigarettes) If this happened at my till, I'd:

  1. Tell the Second Customer (SC) that the OP wasn't finished yet and could she step back from the service area (I often have to do this when the current customer is finishes packing and then can't get to the card machine because the next customer or their trolley is blocking the end of the checkout lane)

  2. If SC signposted that they didn't understand me, I would assess how long it was likely to take to get them to understand the issue. (or if my retail radar clocked that they were one of those customers who just like to be awkward and wouldn't move)

  3. If I felt it would take too long to explain/be understood, I'd go to plan B - go back to the OP's transaction and get it completed ASAP and deal with SC once the OP has gone rather than holding them up.

  4. If SC wasn't going to move, I'd just make a note of what items were the OPs and put them through ... if I wasn't sure then I'd double check with the OP if the item was theirs, if it was scan it, if not then put it back with SC's.

Which appears to be what happened to the OP ... so what part of that was a problem or necessitated moving to another till?

In my supermarket would take longer to move tills as I'd have to log off my till, secure it with the till lock, move to a till that was cashed up, get the keys to unlock the new till lock, log in, wait for it to boot up, and then go through the transaction ... not to mention moving all of your items over to the next till to scan through.

It doesn't really matter though does it?! There are bigger problems in the world

The Tesco Express at the Tower of London was absolute carnage today. The Wanstead branch was very busy too, full of locals. No one had any problem queuing AFAIK Smile

OP, your anger / irritation / whatever is misdirected. This is about people not respecting the queuing system - I get that - because it's not culturally their thing, and then pulling a fast one by pretending to have a limited knowledge of English as an excuse. You can't blame the staff for someone else taking the p.

I witnessed an incident in Tesco, Liverpool St a little while ago that will stick. A customer was fingering the open baked treats, licking said fingers and then handling the next without actually selecting anything. A young Asian man asked her to use the tongs and but she couldn't understand what he was saying. When he took the time to explain gently she screamed a loud and loud tirade of personal and racist abuse at him....in perfect English Hmm

but I thought her age mattered because I do think younger workers are unsure on how to handle situations

Hmm no op her age does not matter at all. She did what she could.
What exactly would you have her do?
Scream at the woman who didn't understand english very well anyway? She served you and she served the lady, job done.

A lot of the shops don't open today.
I didn't realise that it wasn't all!

Really don't understand what the issue is? Are people not supposed to put their items on after you, you'd hate Aldi.
