To think it isn't 'choccy egg day'

Overheard in supermarket this morning. Mum happily telling moaning DC that if they didn't stop the choccy egg bunny won't bring them anything for choccy egg day.

I know not everyone is religious. But given the name 'Easter' isn't exactly loaded with religious connotations, AIBU to think renaming Easter 'choccy egg day' is just ridiculous?

You have too much time on your hands to even notice this.

It depends on the age of the child I think, a young child will have no concept of the word 'easter' but would understand 'chocolate egg', not that it matters.

Technically its a Spring/fertility festival that involves stuffing your face and fornication but we can't mention that in public or to children.

Child was at least in primary. It was going on right in front of me in the queue, usually I have better things to do Grin It's the choccy that got me too I think, I have an irrational hatred of shortening words like that and wondered if it was just me. I wasn't raised in a house with religion by any means, but by that age I understood that we had chocolate eggs on a day called Easter that was important to Christians. Not expecting that every primary school child should know the bible back to front, but I do think we can mark 'Easter' secularly. Celebrate new life, family etc. I find reducing it to a day on which chocolate eggs are eaten a bit sad to be honest.

In a lot of houses it is just an ordinary day though, in which people often receive a choccy egg Grin and hopefully a roasty woasty din dins if you're lucky.

I'm not sure Easter is about family specifically... Not every holiday is about family... It really is mainly about chocolate (but not choccy) for most people...

I find it frustrating tbh. My daughter came home from school telling me all about how the Easter bunny leaves loads of chocolate eggs in her bedroom for Easter. No my love, easter is about Jesus. At least for us church going folk.

I am sure someone will tell me to get over it and it's some pagan ritual whereby we all stuffed ourselves silly with chocolate etc.

Anyway I told her the Easter bunny is just a story for babies. Spoil sport maybe, I have got her an egg and she has some from relatives too. But no bloody way are my children going to start believing in the sodding Easter bunny. I can just about forgive the notion of Father Christmas but I am raising my children CofE not CofCommercialism.

The words 'choccy egg' make me feel utterly sick.

You could say this is like a transition from Eostre to Easter, either is better than 'choccy egg day' though.

In reality though, doesn't really matter does it?!

I don't mention Easter bunnies or Jesus to my children, both are fairy tales. They aren't really that bothered about Easter eggs either tbh. It's just a nice bank holiday weekend for us!

I think it's a nice way to describe it. I'm an atheist so the only thing about it is my friends buy me a choc egg or rabbit or something cute.

The only thing we do for Easter in my family is Easter eggs. Not religious, but we're not going to miss out on the eggs which had nothing to do with Jesus/Christianity anyway.

PS: I'm agnostic but agree with the telling of the Easter story (inc cruicifixion) as it's not just "choccy egg day", it's bit more than that.

PPS: the term "choccy egg day" is - IMHO- a crucifiable offence in itself.
