To think it isn't 'choccy egg day'

lisaIambe · 15/04/2017 21:30

Overheard in supermarket this morning. Mum happily telling moaning DC that if they didn't stop the choccy egg bunny won't bring them anything for choccy egg day.

I know not everyone is religious. But given the name 'Easter' isn't exactly loaded with religious connotations, AIBU to think renaming Easter 'choccy egg day' is just ridiculous?

Okay silverbirch. Call it fucking choccy egg day. Call it what you damn well please.

RedBullBlood · 16/04/2017 00:27

My BIL is a priest. He marries people, he buries people, he visits sick people, he is responsible for church organising charity work - soup kitchens for homeless, clothes donations for homeless and/or struggling. He visits old people in homes who never see another visitor. But you just carry on pissing yourself laughing at him, themueslicamel, I'm sure you're giving much more to society than he ever could.

MangosteenSoda · 16/04/2017 00:31

You don't have to be religious to call Easter by its name.

Presumably if they are at primary school, they will know they are on Easter holidays, not choccy egg holidays.

Floggingmolly · 16/04/2017 00:33

Very infantile response, mueslicamel Hmm

SilverBirchWithout · 16/04/2017 00:45

diodati why so angry?

I certainly don't like Choccy Egg Day personally, but your suggestion of Fucking Choccy Egg Day does have a certain resonance and does emphasise the Pagan fertility symbolism of its cultural history Grin

diodati · 16/04/2017 01:18

Damn straight, silverbirch.

FairytalesAreBullshit · 16/04/2017 04:06

It's personal preference. Personally I emphasise what the importance of Easter and Christmas is, so they don't associate it merely as a day they get given stuff. I can't say to the woman next to me who is more secular, that her children should be taught the true significance.

TheLegendOfBeans · 16/04/2017 06:29

Happy Choccy Egg Day everyone!

SallyGinnamon · 16/04/2017 06:31

I don't believe in God either mueslicamel but both of us might be in for an awful shock on our deathbeds...

SallyGinnamon · 16/04/2017 06:36

Oops. Was going to add that everyone has their own beliefs for whatever reason and as long as it doesn't involve harm to others that's fine.

I basically believe in the Big Bang theory but the idea that all this effectively came out of swirling gases that nobody knows where they came from is just as worthy of you 'pudding yourself laughing' as a man in the sky making everything.

SallyGinnamon · 16/04/2017 06:38

Ha ha. Obviously autocorrect has a obscenity filter! Pissing, not pudding yourself!

mathanxiety · 16/04/2017 06:58

CaptainProton, great post.

wictional · 16/04/2017 07:05

It does rile me a little that the reasons behind the holidays get passed over in favour of presents and chocolates, but then I come from a family with vicars in (not that I'm especially religious, just mindful that it has a religious basis, pagan, Christian or not, that should be respected).

wictional · 16/04/2017 07:06

(Basically I agree with fairytales, who worded it a lot better!!)

MaisyPops · 16/04/2017 07:09

for us non-Christians it is also a UK Bank Holiday, why are we not allowed to celebrate a few days off in a Secular way without having the "real meaning" of the holiday forced upon us. It is NOT my meaning.
Acknowledging that Easter is a christian festival (which is why people have it off work given the religious herritage of the UK) is not forcing the religious meaning onto you, or others.
Calling it choccy egg day etc and removing any religious link is just silly. Because we dobt have a "ooh lets buy chocolate" bank holiday.
Its like May Day bank holiday. Its May Day bank holiday, not "lets have a lie in and eat lots of food" day. There are traditions associated with May Day. I choose not to do much for it (used to as a kid in a village) but that doesnt mean the history of May day isnt there.

Parker231 · 16/04/2017 07:16

To those who say that we should respect the religious basis of Easter and Christmas, some of us ignore any religious aspects as they aren't something we believe in. For our family these events are time off work with a good excuse to have lots of parties and presents (Christmas) and lots of chocolate (Easter). This doesn't mean that others can't celebrate in their own way by going to church.

Fl0ellafunbags · 16/04/2017 07:17

What next... Halloween becoming "Pumpky-wumpkin day"?

Twick or Tweaty Pumpky Wumpkin day has a ring to it.

MaisyPops · 16/04/2017 07:36

Parker231
Respecting the religious background of holidays doesnt mean you have to celebrate the religious side.
There's a difference between not celebrating the religious side of a holiday and somebody not acknowledging where it comes from because it doesnt suit their belief. Next step along is to teach children its a choccy egg day, which just makes them sound ignorant.

DH is agnostic(more athiest but feels thats as big a statement as being religious). He doesnt believe in any of the religious stuff. But he knows the easter story because its basic cultural awareness.

Very simple, we have a long weekend at easter. Easter is when some people believe... and they go to church to celebrate. We dont, but we have a lovely fanily weekend.

Or in our case, we do half way Easter because Im religious and DH isnt. We do fish and hot cross buns on good friday, He comes to church with me Easter Sunday. Then we go for brunch/coffee. We swap chocolate on Easter Sunday/Monday when we go for a family day and lunch.

BertrandRussell · 16/04/2017 07:41

"Mum happily telling moaning DC that if they didn't stop the choccy egg bunny won't bring them anything for choccy egg day"

Pictures or it didn't happen.

Parker231 · 16/04/2017 07:49

MaisyPops - my children know the stories of the Bible but that to us they are just that - stories. luckily we have friends from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds so the DC's have grown up with an open mind to other people's beliefs although when they were younger if you mentioned Easter, they would respond 'egg'!

MaisyPops · 16/04/2017 07:56

Parker231
Fair dos then.
Im very much of the view that people can do Easter how they like as long as they dont try to deny/hide where it comes from.

I hate the 'i dont believe in religion so im going to make sure my children have nothing to do with it, they'll be told the stories are rubbish etc... but we celebrate Easter and Christmas and Pancake Day' approach. Much better as youve done to allow children to learn about things and understand what others believe.

And i think Easter Eggs crop up in my
Top 3 associations for Easter, and I'm a Christian! Grin

cowgirlsareforever · 16/04/2017 08:04

I think that the Easter story, whether you believe in God or not, is very powerful and moving. There is plenty of historical evidence that Jesus existed and that he was crucified. Whether he was the son of God, a complete mad man or somebody who simply wanted to spread a message of love and tolerance in very difficult, I think he was a pretty special person and maybe for that reason alone we should all respect the Easter period.

makeourfuture · 16/04/2017 08:04

If we are speaking of the Christian Easter, I find great comfort in its core message. That we as humans are all faulted, but that we aren't lost causes. Grace is a beautiful concept, that we have value, that someone cares, that our transgressions can be completely erased and that if we fill our hearts with love and joy and good things, our future can be one of beauty and happiness.

cowgirlsareforever · 16/04/2017 08:06

That should say 'very difficult times'.

elQuintoConyo · 16/04/2017 08:07

I live in Spain.

Choccy woccy eggys [tm] are creeping in, but mostly it's all about a week of this: amazing to see. They carry platforms - diaramas? and they start iff with the Romans- silence fills the town. Very impressive (freaks me out!)

I'm off to rip the head of my chocolate Lindl bunny knock-off.
