Isn't "sending a message" the opposite of tactical voting?

I thought tactical voting was about voting for the least objectionable candidate who has a chance of winning in your constituency, if the party you actually want has no chance at all.

Whereas "sending a message" is voting for the one who's going to lose anyway, but you wanted to show support anyway.

Or am I very old and it's all changed these days?

I've got no idea these days! It's all very odd.

You see people on the news voting in a way that us really a wasted vote - 'sending a message' is a tactic I guess if giving the main party a V sign, or say voting ukip to show how pissed off you are with current policies on say, immigration.

Tactical voting is voting for the someone you don't really believe in as they are more likely to win than your preference. Voting for something you don't believe in to 'send a message' is just being an arsehole.

Where I live it is basically two parties who swap it between them. The party i usually vote for comes a very far off 3rd. I usually am very against tactical voting to get rid of a party and have resolutely voted for the person i believe in most no matter if they have a chance, because i believe this is what a democracy is about. However, i am feeling that belief being seriously challenged this time as i really do want to get rid of our current conservative MP who is an arse. We would quite honestly have to somehow shift into a parallel universe for my preferred party to win, so I think I will end up going for my second choice. God this is depressing.

Whatever else you all do, vote for a viable candidate. Look where not voting and tactical voting got us!!! Voter apathy and people not voting Hillary because they wanted Bernie are the reason Trump won the election.

I cannot believe they've called a GE. Absolute tossers. Because we don't have enough fucking chaos in the country and the world, let's just throw another log on the fire. This is nuts.
