I agree across. Things just feel too important for me to get idealistic and vote for someone who will never in a million years win. We have to have a viable opposition to May in some shape or form, so i will suck it up and vote for the person who can beat the conservatives in my area. I am hopeful though as we were majority remain around here. It will be interesting to see how our local elections go in May and if it gives a taster for how things will go in June.

Oh my goodness Helsinki. Putting Trump in enforced witness protection would be the ultimate punishment. It would kill him having to go into hiding and pretend to be someone else. I think you might be a genius. Grin

Blimey. If I caught Merkel looking at me like that, I'd run - immediately - for the long grass.

Let's be clear - there (to me) are positives and negatives of Remain or Leave. And I'm firmly on the fence, but accepting that what's done is done. But Cameron REALLY makes me angry.

I think she just did it in the hope of getting out before his visit.

GingerIvy · 18/04/2017 14:36

I think they figure if, by some chance, they do lose, they can bow out of any blame for any shit storm that occurs. If they win, they can still say "look we did a GE to give Labour a chance to take over, they didn't, it's not our fault." win-win for them.

Ah, what if the MPs don't agree... apparently that's not been done yet.

BTW, thank you to the poster several threads ago when we were talking about Russian troll factories, who suggested the "alt-Right" were behaving in similar fashion.

I know we've discussed it being hard to tell the difference between paid trolls, volunteer campaigners who have been tasked, and fellow travellers who've just picked up fleas.

But comparison to the troll factories has helped clarified my thoughts.

I've previously been easily knocked off course by (sometimes deliberately invoked!) doubts about the ethics of examining the poster vs just putting up counters to their arguments. Now I'm feeling less squeamish at looking at the whole pattern, and in some cases dropping the assumption that a particular person is posting in good faith.

NB this isn't about whether I disagree with someone, or about posters who are open that eg they're supporting Shelter's campaign for better rental rights. It's about people who are concealing the fact that they are being organised and tasked, and who are carefully drip-dripping ideas and nudging emotions rather than stating what they're about.

That may not sound very coherent outside my head! But it's already helped me go, "Woah, what's this person really up to?" and engage differently.

As far as Trump and any future legal action; In all seriousness, it will be Nixon redux. If when they have enough evidence to hang Trump, he will be quietly approached by Pence, GOP Congressional leaders, key cabinet members, and a team of lawyers and the case against him presented to him. He'll be told that if he doesn't resign he will definitely be impeached AND will be found guilty in a criminal trial. He will be offered the chance to resign and the promise of a pardon given him by Pence. I'm pretty sure that's what happened with Nixon. He wouldn't have resigned unless he was sure he was going to be impeached and convicted.

The GOP and, I expect, the Govt 'Establishment' don't want the circus of impeachment hearings nor do they want the spectacle of a former US President going to trial and heading off to prison. It's too 'Third World Banana Republic' for them.

As much as I hate seeing him get off scot free, I'll be sort of OK with this. At this point I wouldn't care if he was lifted out of the Oval Office by pink angels on wings. I just want him GONE.

PerkingFaintly · 18/04/2017 15:13

(I've always been aware of the possibility of concealed agendas, of course: the change is that I feel I should I routinely assess for them, now I know that social media is routinely politically trolled.)

cozietoesie · 18/04/2017 15:33

I'm not sure that it's in his nature to accept that sort of deal, Across.

cozietoesie · 18/04/2017 15:34

In the current clime, anyway.

AcrossthePond55 · 18/04/2017 15:43

I know what you mean cozie, but like most weasels, he has a great sense of self-preservation above all. If they can convince him that he won't be able to get out of it by using a 'fall guy', I think he'll take the deal.

He'll take it and then spend the rest of his life spinning it and finger pointing.
