Sorry for the rubbish title but I couldn't see a new thread!

Yes, it was all about timing.

Not sure I agree with Abramson that meta-data is useless in this context. The meta-data would, at the very least, be date, time, sender and receiver of each email. Which surely would be where you'd start if you were identifying duplicate emails?

But the nub is the FBI in NY didn't swiftly identify the emails of duplicates, and instead they became a campaign issue.

I don’t think Trump knows who’s the leader of North Korea

God, he's pathetic. I'm no politician but I know a fair bit about NKorea, having read a fair few books on it. DT has not got a clue about history

BiglyBadgers · 18/04/2017 08:58

Pussygate was causing Trump's support to falter - then Comey's unsolicited letter to Congress changed the story to a later-disproved slur on Clinton. So I assumed Comey must be deliberately trying to help Trump. But with the revelations about Russian involvement, coming from Comey himself, I couldn't understand why he'd do that.

This also sums up my feeling about Comey recently. I have felt increasingly confused about what the hell Comey has been up to. The pre-election letter seemed on the face of it to be designed to screw up Hillary's chances, yet post-election he has clearly been going for Trump. That Twitter thread does seem to make sense of it and gives a pretty believable chain of events. If it is true Comey must be so, so pissed with Trump. Can you imagine how furious he must be at being pushed into a situation where he ended up influencing the election like that! Just wow! Shock

This is a long segment from MSNBC on Trump/terrorism/money laundering but very worthwhile:

... and the New Yorker:

MsHooliesCardigan · 18/04/2017 09:21

The more I read, the more I think he'll be impeached by the end of the year. There are too many people onto him and it's much harder to bury/burn evidence than it was in Nixon's day. I just don't get the greed of some people - there comes a point when you simply don't need yet more money. Why does anyone need tens or hundreds of billions of dollars? I couldn't sleep at night sitting on that kind of money while millions of children are starving to death. I've always been sceptical about conspiracy theories but I believe this one.
What's really scary about Brexit and and Trump is how quickly decades of transparency and relative harmony can collapse.

Lweji · 18/04/2017 09:45

You don't need to read much about Korea not to make Trump's basic mistakes.
You just need to keep up with basic news over the years and have more than two brain cells.

MrsT2007 · 18/04/2017 09:46

I think he's actually skint.

It's all built on roundabouts of debt and whatever assets he has are indebted to others.

Lweji · 18/04/2017 09:49

MrsT2007

Many feel that's the reason he won't release his tax returns.

MrsT2007 · 18/04/2017 10:00

It'd make sense wouldn't it Lewji?!

BiglyBadgers · 18/04/2017 10:29

May is making a statement at 11:15 this morning. Nobody knows what it is about, so there are lots of rumours about her calling an election. I have a suspicion it will end up being something really dull, but you never know.

GingerIvy · 18/04/2017 10:31

"But Mrs May could call an early election if two-thirds of MPs in the Commons vote for it and Jeremy Corbyn has previously indicated Labour would support such a move."

From an article.

I'd be surprised if 2/3 of the MPs were in agreement on anything at this point, much less this. It's the worst possible time for it.

originalbiglymavis · 18/04/2017 10:32

There's a thread about the 11:15 announcement. There's a book going: GE, Kylie dating prince Andrew, May resignation, someone High Up has died, or troops into north Korea.

GingerIvy · 18/04/2017 10:33

I suspect military announcement.

PerkingFaintly · 18/04/2017 10:46

Annoyingly, I can't watch Rachel Maddow on my only current device.

That New Yorker article is very interesting, though. Thank you, lionheart.

Investigators of financial fraud like to say that government corruption, money laundering, and other illicit behavior often form a “nexus” with even more troubling activity, such as financing terrorism and developing weapons of mass destruction. This appears to be true in the [Trump] Baku deal. As the Mammadovs were preparing to build the tower, the family patriarch, Ziya, was cementing his financial relationship with the Darvishis, the Iranian family with ties to the country’s Revolutionary Guard.
...
J. Matthew McInnis, an Iran expert at the American Enterprise Institute, who served as a consultant to Michael Flynn when Flynn was the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told me that owners of Revolutionary Guard-related businesses often become rich. But there is a catch: from time to time, they should expect to be asked to serve the needs of the Guard. “When the Revolutionary Guard says, ‘We need to move some illicit stuff,’ or ‘We need new parts for our missiles,’ they reach out to these guys,” McInnis explained. “It’s a soft network that can do all sorts of things that are very hard to trace.”

And much more of the same.

I've just enjoyed the BBC coverage of the Easter roll

www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-39624852

Notice, Spicer reading a story (not in costume) in his monotone voice. And Trump's reply to a question about Korea: "gotta behave".

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/04/2017 10:56

I think military too given that a number of F35s arrived at RAF Lakenheath this weekend.

Lweji · 18/04/2017 11:00

Compare and contrast:
"Hey everybody. Are you having fun?"
"My only job (...) is to introduce the person who made all this possible, my wife, Michelle"
"Over to you, honey"

cozietoesie · 18/04/2017 11:06

Got it in one, Roussette.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/04/2017 11:07

oh thank God. Was convinced she was about to announce a calamitous war.

Roussette · 18/04/2017 11:09

Apparently she might go becaue of health reasons, she has diabetes and it must be a punishing work schedule

All hearsay ... she has not finished...

peaceout · 18/04/2017 11:16

I'm so disappointed, I thought she would announce that we've made contact with aliens 😆

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/04/2017 11:19

At least I think we can be a teeny tiny bit more relaxed about the NK situation I think, if the government were expecting major escalation surely they wouldnt be having a GE?
