Not sure why you are linking racism to 'class' Hmm

Scabetty · 13/04/2017 20:43

Evelight, we are 6 pages in so do you still think the comment was racist?

SoupDragon · 13/04/2017 20:44

Who says teenagers don't speak about people in terms of class? Mine do

Mine don't.

ComedyBoobs · 13/04/2017 20:47

My DCs age range: 6 -28. None of them refer to a class system.

Scabetty · 13/04/2017 20:49

Class is not given a thought here either.

ComedyBoobs · 13/04/2017 20:56

Class is just a made up social construct. Puts us in our place SmileWink

Floggingmolly · 13/04/2017 21:00

I have actually never heard anyone referred to as upper middle class. Maybe I move in the wrong circles.
What exactly alerted you to the fact that he was upper, op? And your dd needed your annual income for a school assignment? Confused
Was this so she qualified for her upper middle class badge too?

TheLuminaries · 13/04/2017 22:05

They say in America it is race & in Britain it is class. This thread would appear to confirm this.

KidLorneRoll · 13/04/2017 22:09

"here are the top images of my google image search for "top rappers" (when I googled rap music, it gave images of logos saying "RAP MUSIC")

Yeah, google image search vs a lifelong interest in the genre. OK then.

NashvilleQueen · 14/04/2017 08:57

So breaking the joke down he's either saying the wearing of a hoodie will turn you into a rapper because hoodies are synonymous with rap music OR impliedly the wearing of a hoodie will turn you into a black man because black men are associated with rap and black rappers 'traditionally' wear hoodies.

Those who hear the latter probably conclude it is a racist comment. But given the potential offence of calling someone racist I'd want a bit more than that evidence to go on.

As a complete aside if I had to pick a 'group' most associated with hoodies then (apart from a ladies netball squad perhaps) I'd go for skateboarding teenage boys. Not rappers.

princessconsuelobananahammock · 14/04/2017 09:14

Er....it was a lighthearted way of telling the kid to follow the dress code. I've made lots of similar comments - usually about ear/headphones & DJ school.

UterusUterusGhali · 14/04/2017 09:31

I didn't choose the thug life...mummy and daddy chose it for me. 😎

OfaFrenchmind2 · 14/04/2017 09:40

Not racist. Many rappers are white, latino or asian.
Many are sexist cunts, also.

Bantanddec · 14/04/2017 12:30

It's hardly racist OP! He was commenting on his shit fashion sense!

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 14/04/2017 13:25

"Take your hoodie down, it's against the dress code - you'll grow up to become a rapper".

Eminem? Or did he culturally identify as Black American and I missed him coming out?

VladmirsPoutine · 14/04/2017 14:24

Straight Outta Compton Cheshire!

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 14/04/2017 14:30

I'd think lots of youngsters would bloody love to be a talented rapper, earn the big bucks and get adulation etc. Sounds like it was meant in a jokey way, doesn't sound racist to me. Eminem probably being the most well known rapper of his generation and is a white male.
