"Take your hoodie down, it's against the dress code - you'll grow up to become a rapper".

The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think 'rapper in a hoodie' is quite a sensible career ambition....

Another - huh is this racist???
LucyFuckingPevensie · 13/04/2017 14:25

Grin I Like that the 16 year old isn't just a middle class hoody, but an upper middle class hoody.

I am working class, I wear hoodies. Can I be a rapper ?

rightknockered · 13/04/2017 14:25

I think I understand OP what you mean about certain terms taking the place of outright racist descriptors. I agree about the word urban being used to describe all things black, and also rap being associated with black people.
Just because some rappers are white, and white people were hoodies whether they are rappers or not, is not the point. By denying that these subtle forms of racism and ways of subjugating groups in society exist, we can delude ourselves that racism has been stamped out.

rightknockered · 13/04/2017 14:26

wear hoodies not were, obviously

RachelRagged · 13/04/2017 14:26

No its not racist .

Eminem raps ,, he is very white

HoneyDragon · 13/04/2017 14:27

People who think racism no longer exists are wearing their hoodies to tight over their heads.

HelenaWay · 13/04/2017 14:27

Teacher was insulting rap music as is expected 'that's not real music ...', kids roll eyes .... I have told my yr2s on dress down days to remove hoodies in class as no rappers allowed. I should be sacked for my racism them.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/04/2017 14:31

Lmaohesterton

Can't touch this (quinoa)

Scabetty · 13/04/2017 14:31

I would be concerned if they grew up to be Honey G though. Wink

MiddleClassProblem · 13/04/2017 14:32

As a recipient of various kinds of racism, def know it exists

GinIsIn · 13/04/2017 14:32

He didn't make a racist comment. YOU made a racist assumption. Hmm

Vango · 13/04/2017 14:37

I think you're right Scabetty. I can't understand rap music at all. I do however, have a massive soft spot for Professor Green so I'm learning an appreciation.

Edballsisoneniftydancer · 13/04/2017 14:37

So you didn't even hear it yourself and were told it out of context.

I am thinking no case to answer here.

Your opening line is potential ageist however insofar as the age of the person who "said" it is somewhat irrelevant (as are the other descriptors come to think of it)

Edballsisoneniftydancer · 13/04/2017 14:38

potentially

quencher · 13/04/2017 14:39

they find ways of "coding" racism. Yup! Agree. The type of racism you are talking about is not in your face. A lot of Mn will not agree with you. I have come a cross it too many times to not know what they meant.

is urban really code for black? Another yup! Grin

Everything that most white middle class men and women disagree with. Why? It's because it's beloved to corrupt young white children to behave black. Whatever that means. Rap has always been seen as threat.

urban music" (re the controversy around Beyonce vs. Adele) etc read as racist/ dismissive towards people of colour. Basically because people can't be "openly" racist anther yup! Grin
There is truth and evidence in this one too.

Black people make jokes about being urban all the time. Mostly to patronise who ever thinks they should be put in that box.

Hug a hoodie was another. It put me off Cameroon for the rest of terms as pm.

quencher · 13/04/2017 14:42

Yes, a white personality would get away with wearing a hoodie. Black professional black persons off to the gyms can't. Possibility of being a drug dealer, gang related, rapper giving the police more reasons to stop and search you. It's well documented and what happens with black men who wear hoodies.

CoolCarrie · 13/04/2017 14:44

Not racist, quite frankly funny !

Scabetty · 13/04/2017 14:47

Urban legend, urban myth, Urban outfitters, urban sprawl, urban decay. Not code for black. No racism here.

hmcAsWas · 13/04/2017 14:49

Not racist.

SquatBetty · 13/04/2017 14:50

Yes it's racist if the staff member has the opinion that all rappers are black.

But just seeing the comment on its own and obviously not knowing the staff member personally, I don't think it's racist per se as I'm aware there are plenty of non-black rappers. So it's rappist, more than racist.
