Car insurance

Just tried a quote with LV, me as main driver, business use plus my mum domestic use - 15000 miles a year.

Except the first quote I ticked partner for my mum's relationship by mistake.

Redid quote with corrected relationship - quote was £400 more! Why??? Same DOB, same driver history, just a change to an incestuous relationship...Shock

Insurance is all about spreading risk. The more you can differentiate between classes of driver/cars, the more you can eliminate the pooling of premiums.

The ultimate commercial goal for an insurance company is to have a book of customers who pay their premiums and never claim.

The problem is, the closer we get to such analysis (and why is there a sudden rush towards "AI" in business ?????) the closer we get to some people - "skunks and drunks" - being effectively uninsurable. Which in most cases will probably lead to an increase in the number of uninsured accidents, since it's bleeding obvious that a high-risk uninsured driver is more likely to have an accident.

That said, car insurance in the UK is f*ed up anyway (I once said that in a presentation I gave). We have this fairy-story fiction that it's "the car" that's insured, and equip our law enforcement agencies with tools to look for uninsured cars, ignoring the fact that a car snapped by ANPR may still not be insured as it's not being driven by an insured driver.

It's not an intractable problem. Many other countries manage to insure cars regardless of who's driving.

Interesting reading all these bits, insurance is indeed a weird one.

So tried some other quotes; mum was going to gift me the car but in the end LV said it was cheaper not to, have her still as reg keeper and second driver.
