Smoked cold ham, opened 5 days ago, smells fine and is perfectly in date. Best before 19th April. Pack says once opened consume within 2 days. Aibu to eat it anyway? It'll be fine won't it? Confused

I tend to ignore the 'consume within' date so long as it's still in date, if you see what I mean.

I may be very wrong, though!

If it smells fine & is in date, I'd eat it. If I wasn't sure, I probably wouldn't give it to 1 year old DD but me & DP would be fine.

Sat at work eating my sandwich now. Tastes fine. Not too worried!

Smoked ham is salted so I personally wouldn't worry about it unless it started looking/tasting odd

Ameliablue · 10/04/2017 17:28

I wouldn't eat it. Cooked meat is high risk as the bacteria that cause illness won't necessarily make the food taste bad or smell off. There are different bacteria that do that.

I see you have eaten it, but was just going to say I would have no qualms if it looked and smelled fine

NeonGod73 · 10/04/2017 17:48

Anything smoked keeps for a long time. Even fish. It's a preservation method. I would eat that ham.

HoneyBeeMum1 · 10/04/2017 20:28

I would definitely eat it. You would definitely know if it was off and as others have said, the smoking process will keep it edible for a surprisingly long time.
