To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

I want to buy a v-neck tshirt (preferably a few) as I hate tight neck, but the v's are all really low cut! It's a tshirt for the school run, my tits don't need to be on show.

The only shop I can get them in in my town is a proper old lady shop that does twinsets, flanelette nighties and "tan" tights in a shade of noones skin!

demonchilde · 09/04/2017 00:23

YANBU. I have thought the same for a few years - it is shit! Mismatching, clashing bright prints, sodding pineapple/ palm tree prints. sportswear that you can only get away with if you have an arse smaller than a 6 year old childs, crappy slogans on T shirts and now netted skirts over stuff. Ugh!

People think looking back at pics of them in 80's and 90's fashion is bad, but I reckon this generation will be mortified when they do the same in a few years. Even bermuda shirts/ shorts look stylish compared to a lot of this stuff. And whilst we could hide or burn the photos, theirs will still be there, immortalised by social media. For once, I am glad I am knocking on a bit!

Salmotrutta · 09/04/2017 00:24

Oh god yes!

I've been trying to buy jeans for ages - I'm 50+ and just want a decent straight leg pair of jeans that arent bloody skinny jeans! Angry

And yes - skinny jeans only work on very young, slim and athletic types. Anyone else looks ridiculous in them.

Salmotrutta · 09/04/2017 00:33

Oh, and that dress that QueenofThorns posted - bloody awful.

Looks like someone's laundry basket tipped out and sewn together.

I freely admit that I had my hippy phase back in the day as a teen and even I wouldn't have been seen dead in that.

And I was a card-carrying member of the tie-dye/gypsy/Indian print look.

You need to look in the right places, here is a guide to some alternatives - although not cheap]]

reuset · 09/04/2017 00:59

The cold shoulder tops are horrible. Second thread I've seen where they're mentioned. They don't flatter anyone that I've seen, young or old. Some cold shoulder jumpers tonight! I saw a nice cardigan the other week, short sleeves ruined it. If I want short sleeves, I'll just roll 'em up.

Also finding anything plain. Giant flowers or embroidery on everything. And those frilly blouses, they come down in a kind of 'v' shape. 70s prairie fashion. What are they called? Bumped into an acquaintance of mine, thought she was in fancy dress (she might have been, to be fair, if this isn't a fashion thing).

Salmotrutta · 09/04/2017 01:01

Actually when I'm not looking for jeans I go for styles like Joe Browns, Joules, Ness etc. for work but I buy in sales and clearances etc online.

But I want a decent casual wardrobe with jeans, long length t-shirts with decent sleeves, nice crisp white shirts, skirts with a decent cut that aren't micro mini at the very least, jumpers that are a good length etc.

I'm reasonably tall and trying to find long legs and sleeves is pretty difficult.

Graphista · 09/04/2017 01:55

Shodan that dress is a fucking hospital gown! Look the ties at the back of the neck!

Queenofthorns I actually like that but I like 70's fashion anyway,

I've been buying 'mens' clothes for years - t-shirts, jumpers, scarves, hats, lalalalyra - mens v-necks are what I've been wearing for years.

Thing is fashion - fine but extreme fashion is generally only worn by 13-25 year olds - the rest of us need clothes too!!

Does anyone remember when new look first came out? They were our primark, cheap semi fashionable clothes, now way out my price range and ridiculous looks.

Also when supermarkets started doing clothes they did cheap basics in the colours anyone can wear with classic patterns like stripes, checks or spots and the odd bit of floral. Now they're trying to compete with the likes of top shop! Crazy!

I agree if someone starts a shop with cheap, OK quality (not high remember cheap), basic:

T-shirts in plain or basic pattern cotton

Jeans - no rips or embellishment, proper straight leg, boot cut or baggy and with a decently appointed waist where waists actually are! The high waists are almost as bad as the low cut!

Trousers - what my mother would call slacks - basic tailored straight or boot cut trousers, normal waist, no embellishment, WITH pockets in black/navy/grey/brown for work outfits

Blouses/shirts - when I was looking for a blouse for my mum for Christmas the searches showed TOPS no collars no buttons that's not a blouse! A blouse is a feminine version of a shirt, in softer fabric with a collar, cuffs and button through. Preferably in neutral/non crazy colours and patterns and no stupid embellishments!

Shirts - sometimes we want a shirt, slightly more structured than a blouse, but shaped for a woman please.

Skirts - from just above knee to ankle length, non crazy colours/patterns/fabrics, straight or slightly a-line/bias cut.

Jumpers - soft fabrics, no plunging necklines, no stupid sleeves, AGAIN basic colours/patterns, no stupid embellishments

Cardigans - as for jumpers but WITH BUTTONS not 'waterfall' or 'wrap' aka can't be arsed to do buttons and buttonholes! I prefer just below waist length some like a longer line but NOT looking like a knitted dress gone wrong!

Dresses - I like maxi dresses they're comfy and easy but each to their own (and I'm 5'2 and size 18 Apple shape) but please again non crazy patterns and colours and with bra friendly shoulders/sleeves.

Simple shift dresses - without plunging necklines, or daft sleeves, or fancy dress embellishments

Also can they please make them all machine washable and preferably easy to dry and iron (if you iron I don't) too. 😉

Colours for tops/dresses: black, white, cream, beige, grey, navy, dark green, dark brown, red, mid blue, maybe lemon yellow, mint green, lilac/dark purple.

What do we think?

And that's before I get started on shoes!

BarbaraofSeville · 09/04/2017 07:10

I love Uniqlo but unfortunately they've decided that they don't want to sell anything to anyone outside London (yes I know you can mail order but it's a faff with returning stuff and I think you have to pay - I want to try things on).

I complained about the lack of non London Uniqlo on here before (the one in Kent doesn't count) and was roundly told that they are a business not a charity and the reason there is no Uniqlo outside London is that obviously there would be no demand for it as all northerners are backwards peasants - possible slight exaggeration.

But I honestly can't see how stores in Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham and probably some places I've forgotten wouldn't succeed.

I had some vague notion about going shopping later and now I'm not sure. It sounds like it will be a total waste of time but then I have a morbid fascination about seeing some of the horrors described here.

My personal bug bear from last time I attempted shopping was that all tops seemed to be cut for apple shapes, as in to hide a large stomach so they looked awful on me with loads of excess material around the middle completely hiding my waist and then pulling over hips and bust.

QueenOfThorns · 09/04/2017 07:19

Looks like I've split opinion with the 70s dress Grin

I probably wouldn't mind the bottom part on its own as a skirt, just combined with the baggy top part tips it over the edge for me. On a shorter person, it'd look like a walking patchwork quilt!

I've discovered Joe Browns recently, although I tend to shop in the sale section. I wore bootcut jeans for years, but have switched to skinnies, worn with a bum-covering top. I can really only buy trousers from Next because I have long legs and their longer length ones fit me perfectly.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 09/04/2017 07:23

Those off-shoulder shirts remind me of lounging around the house in boyfriends shirts Blush

Though my friend has one and looks amazing, it's just not for me

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/04/2017 07:33

As a follow on to my last post

When lines proove particularly awful put them on Lorraine as must haves

SparkyBlue · 09/04/2017 07:53

Thank god I found this thread. I happened to wonder into river island during my lunch break last week and I came out traumatised. My work colleague calls the cold shoulder and the choker tops the Kat Slater look.

floraeasy · 09/04/2017 07:55

I hate those cold shoulder tops. I think that fashion is over now, though?

I do acknowledge of course that I am far too old to be the target market for these tops anyway.

PoorYorick · 09/04/2017 08:25

Yes, the skirt on the 70s dress isn't too bad. It's just combined with that pillowcase top, it looks like shapeless upholstery.

Jigglyguff · 09/04/2017 08:36

I can't find a decent cardigan anywhere. Just those silly waterfall ones that look like giant fannies.

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 09/04/2017 08:37

I've just remembered what Primark/M&S stores look like at the moment with all their hideous floral tat - church hall jumble sales in 1976.

lljkk · 09/04/2017 08:50

Weird, I got dragged shopping w/ DD other day & we easily avoided all the stuff ppl are moaning about. I didn't even see most of the dreaded items described here. Primark? H&M, New Look anyone? Good for us.

MiddlingMum · 09/04/2017 08:57

Jigglyguff have you had a look at Woolovers? They usually have some more 'classic' cardigans.

I've seen some very odd clothes being worn lately, but I shrug and feel grateful that I've never felt the need to be fashionable.

wigglybeezer · 09/04/2017 08:59

Graphista you're describing what I always say M&S should stock more of, i still have a few bits of classic merino wool knitwear seperates from them from about 20 years ago.
There is hope, DH had this problem a few years ago, all the summer men's clothes were in shiny pastel fabrics not suited to baldy 40 something men ( and he won't buy anything with a logo or slogan!) he bought nothing for about 2 years. The manufacturers seem to have improved mens choice.
Luckily we live in Scotland so i can get away with wearing autumn/ winter styles all year round.

Lunaballoon · 09/04/2017 09:14

Over-ornamented, over-frilly, over-flowery ...

^ God yes! I desperately need new summer work clothes but just can't find anything that's not oversized, has cut out bits or weird fussy details. I despair. I'm seriously considering getting out my sewing machine to make my own even though I'm crap at sewing!

Destinysdaughter · 09/04/2017 09:18

MNetters always have such great ideas for clothes, we should start our own shop! Smile

flapjackfairy · 09/04/2017 09:20

I did manage to buy boot leg and straight jeans in matalan who do different cuts . They were only a tenner and are fine for every day though the zip keeps sneaking down on one pair but that is due to fat belly so cant complain there !

Gwenhwyfar · 09/04/2017 09:37

"I hate those cold shoulder tops. I think that fashion is over now, though?"

I've just started seeing them so obviously just started where I live.
I'm thinking of the ones with holes at the top of the arms though, not the Bardot ones. I can see the point of exposing your shoulders in the Bardot way, but not of having big holes in your top that look like a mouse has been eating them.

Coverup890 · 09/04/2017 09:38

In the home i worked at a women had that stripey dress monstrosity. I honestly thought "isnt it sad she hasnt got anh nicer newer clothes" until i walked into a shop and saw the exact dress on sale. So turns out im less fashionable than an 80 year old!

As for skinny jeans i can never get them over my big calfs or my thighs. It drives me mad as im short not much suits me anyway.
