to wash my hair once a week?

Let me firstly just say, I'm aware this is a very non-important thread! But I'm curious to see what the norm is out there is mumsnet land.
I shower every single morning before work. At one point this also involved washing my hair every single morning too. However, I started to leave my hair longer and longer between washes using my trusty dry shampoo spray and low and behold - my hair is bouncy, luscious and so easy to style. Volume a plenty! Whether I smell like a Bob Marley wannabe or not I have no idea, perhaps people are too polite to say Grin
After my hair is washed it's incredibly flat, limp and lifeless and is generally a nightmare to style so I actually hate having to wash it now! But I think I might be starting to take the proverbial for how long I'm leaving it...
How often do you wash your hair? AIB an U dirty scrubber? Blush

Once a week.
I have thick waist length hair that is very unforgiving if washed too often. When I used to wash it more frequently it got dry and unmanageable. I didn't like that.
Too be honest, the only grease I get it the top section near my scalp. It really is only on about day 6 that it gets noticeable.
I also like it to air dry rather than blow dry as, even with the application of lots of heat protection products, it goes fluffy and frizzy if I blow dry. Then I end up.taking ages with the straighteners to calm it down.
It doesn't smell. I have among my acquaintance a number of rather blunt people who'd be pretty quick to tell me if it did.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 08/04/2017 19:35

My hair is usually fine for 4-5 days before it begins to feel lank. It is often washed a bit more frequently due to exercise like running.

Sairelou · 08/04/2017 19:42

I've been following the curly girl method for the past few weeks and ditched the shampoo completely. Now I only wash with conditioner only every 4 days and refresh whenever my curls are dropping.

ememem84 · 08/04/2017 20:29

stevie ah that wouldn't work my my long ish hair. Shame. Wish it would.

MrsMarigold · 10/04/2017 13:24

I have loads of fine but straight blonde hair, I wash it on alternate days, DH loves the smell of clean hair. Hairdressers always say they love cutting and styling my hair because it is so easy to style, its in excellent condition and glossy. It literally needs nothing done to it on the regime and everyday people people ask if I've had it done. I'm very lucky.

amusedbush · 10/04/2017 13:29

I have naturally very curly hair. If I'm wearing it curly, I will wash it with conditioner (no shampoo at all) and refresh with a spray bottle of water in between washes. Usually every three days.

If I'm blowing it out straight, I will use a sulphate free shampoo to wash and can get 5-7 days from it thanks to dry shampoo.

MrsD28 · 10/04/2017 13:56

I wash my hair every second day or so - it would look better if I washed it every day, but I can't be bothered to get up early to spend the time on it. My hair is very soft and fine with curls (like a little kid's hair!) and I find the opposite to you, OP - if I wash it, it is soft and bouncy, and if I don't wash it, it is limp and lifeless. I think it is because it is quite fine - any grease weighs it down immediately.

itsonlysubterfuge · 10/04/2017 14:09

I have long curly hair and wash it once a week.

It depends on how often you wash it I think. If you wash it everyday and then suddenly switch to a week, there is going to be a period of grossness.

Wash it as little or as much as you prefer. I don't think 1 week is gross at all.

Mumsnut · 10/04/2017 14:20

Every other day

heron98 · 10/04/2017 14:22

I wash mine every day because I go swimming. Otherwise I'd probably wash it less. but once a week is very little! What happens when you play sport? Don't you get sweaty?

Oldraver · 10/04/2017 14:26

I usually wash mine everyday as otherwise it feels skanky. There is the odd occasion I dont and by the next day it looks greasy.

But the reason I do it everyday is I dont like the feel of it unwashed.

MickeyRooney · 10/04/2017 15:17

Every single day.
its even a bit greasy at the end of each day.
if i leave it go any longer, it starts to smell.

funcat · 10/04/2017 15:23

I wash mine every 6-10 days. It definitely feels itchy and smelly if I leave it too long. I always wear it tied back or clipped up - if I wear it down then I'd have to wash it every 3 days I think.

amusedbush · 10/04/2017 15:24

Have the daily washers tried dry shampoo/other methods to go a bit longer between washes? I used to wash daily but the more you wash it, the more you need to wash it. I can now get three days out of it before I need to use anything, and can get another 2-3 days past that with dry shampoo.

MayorMumbum · 10/04/2017 15:31

I have to wash it every day. It's rubbish. I wish I could do it less often but it just looks like a greasy horrible mess if I don't.

Most of the time I leave it to air dry though because I'm too lazy to blow dry Grin.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 10/04/2017 16:08

Every bloody day here. It's too thin to go longer than that, sadly!

blackheartsgirl · 10/04/2017 16:57

Once or twice a week for me, long curly hair which is very thick and takes an age to dry

Bleurghghghgh · 10/04/2017 17:17

I do mine once a week!

JanetheVegan · 10/04/2017 17:32

I wish I could wash my hair once a week. There was a time I could do so. And before that I had dreadlocks which I washed once every 2-3 weeks. However I would never go back to having them, since your head skin suffers a lot.

I think you should balance washing your hair - doing it too often may do you harm due to all the chemicals in the shampoos. But of course being dirty all the time is not recommended as well : P.

For me once every 3-4 days is a must, but I rarely wash my hair day after another.

Julia001 · 10/04/2017 18:15

I wash my hair every 6/7 days, my hair used to be think and dry like a birdsnest and then I was advised to try Aveda shampoo (there are different formulations available). After 6 month and a really de[cent haircut, for the first time ever I had shiny manageable hair. Seriously my hair has never looked so good I love it...so now, once a week and a shower cap is used all other times. :-) This really isn't an advert, but if Aveda are actually listening, I will take a litre bottle of blue malva please. Grin

Roomba · 10/04/2017 18:25

I used to wash my hair daily, as it would be flat and greasy by evening each day. On mat leave I didn't have time for this (my hair is v v long and fine though I have lots of it). I discovered that it didn't get anywhere near as greasy when I didn't wash it all the time. Now I do it a couple of times a week and no one complains about it smelling.

FionaJT · 10/04/2017 18:36

I was a daily washer for a long time, but gave up when I was pregnant as I had grown my hair longer, was wearing it up more and couldn't be bothered (it's very thick and takes a long time to properly rinse and dry when long). I used to feel disgusting and greasy if I didn't wash it daily but now every 3 days is fine. I will leave it 4 if I'm just slobbing around at home on the 4th day, but it will be a bit flat and lifeless. The thing about washing more often making it more greasy definitely rings true with me.

EggysMom · 10/04/2017 19:18

Once a week washer here ... and it's only become that frequent since I started having it coloured to hide the grey. Before that, I was one of those individuals who could go five or six weeks between washes - no, it wasn't greasy - no, it wasn't smelly - it kept body and shine, nobody could tell.

kennycat · 10/04/2017 20:28

This is very topical for me as I'm trying to teach my hair to be less greasy at the moment. I think I have washed my hair virtually every day for at least10 years until about 3 months ago. I'm trying to get more days out of it but it doesnt feel good! My husband has now trained his hair and hasn't washed it since before Christmas. It looks absolutely fine, you wouldn't know he doesn't wash it.
Mine looks yuck on day two and gross by day three but I'm battling on.
I did a whole week the other week but used lots of dry shampoo.

How long does it take to stop feeling like a grimboid??

ChickenVindaloo2 · 10/04/2017 20:58

Since I went on roaccutane, I don't have to wash it as often. I've been off it for a year but my hair is still significantly drier.

I find I can go longer between washes when I've just had my highlights done. The bleach dries it up plus dark roots just look greasier.
