To cut a long story short,

I am pregnant with my first child and DP and I have chosen two names.

For a girl: Noah
(I understand that many people prefer the spelling Noa for a female but we don't.)

For a boy: Ezra

I am sick and tired of my family telling us to change our minds/names. It's getting me down and making me second guess myself.

Does anyone have any advice?

I actually really like Noah for a girl, and think Noah sounds more feminine than masculine.

however... I would never use it for a girl, because despite the fact that I think it's lovely and feminine, I know 99% of the population probably wouldn't feel the same. And I don't think naming your children should just be about what you like, and what you want, and what you believe. They have to live with it, not you.

Tisbollocks · 05/04/2017 14:36

Noa is very popular in Spain, as popular as Amelia is in the UK.

Ezra just makes me think of Amish for some reason.

Floggingmolly · 05/04/2017 14:37

I'd imagine her birth cert says something quite different, NKFell...
Probably Maud or Ethel. Or Bertha Grin

Ecureuil · 05/04/2017 14:37

And to be honest, if I could do anything to make life less difficult for my children then I would. Including not giving them a name that will invite constant comment.

expatinscotland · 05/04/2017 14:38

'I also find it interesting that nobody ever posts threads saying they want to call their baby boy Rose or Matilda or Violet..........'

Exactly, or Keziah, Phoebe or Martha prefaced by 'We wanted a Biblical name for him.'

I know a girl called James- not Jamie or Jaime...James. She was gutted that Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively ruined her uniqueness!

Sometimes we call her Jim (she doesn't like that Grin )

Ha ha! Grin

This reminds me of a woman at a place I used to work at called Bernadette; the manager used to always call her Bernard. Used to drive her crazy. His name was Lee, and I told her to call him Leanne. That stopped him calling her Bernard LOL. Smile

Viviennemary · 05/04/2017 14:40

Youre family have given their opinion on the names and that's fair enough IMHO. But if lots of people are saying the same perhaps it is time to think again. Why saddle a girl with a boy's name. Noah for a girl is very odd indeed. Ezra is unusual but I think it's OK.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/04/2017 14:40

I have a Phoebe, nowt to do with the bible.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/04/2017 14:41

and she's a girl.

expatinscotland · 05/04/2017 14:41

'Genuinely surprised at the amount of people who have never met a female Noah- most Noahs I know are and I'm in Scotland. '

Never met a one, and I'm in Scotland, too Hmm. Met some 'Noa's, but they were all Continental Europeans and the name is 'Noa', not 'Noah'. I'd be 'genuinely surprised' someone lumbered their daughter with such a name.

Chipshopninja · 05/04/2017 14:42

Honestly? The fact that Miley Cyprus has a sister called Noah would be enough to put me off.

Also shows how uneducated I am that the first thing that comes to mind when I hear Ezra isn't that pound fella but George Ezra the singer

BertrandRussell · 05/04/2017 14:42

"I have a Phoebe, nowt to do with the bible."

Does he like his name?

gustofwind · 05/04/2017 14:43

I love Noah for a girl, I think it's beautiful. Far worse names out there quite frankly.

Ezra is cool too.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/04/2017 14:43

Bertrand, I have a girl. I'd never use that for a boy.

WhataMistakeaToMakea · 05/04/2017 14:44

Ignore them and don't talk about it with them again. They are lovely names. I think Noah would suit a girl.

My children have traditional West African names (from those popular to a certain area their family is from) no one has ever been rude enough to comment on their names and children are very accepting and have never commented other than to check spelling or say they are beautiful names. Your child isn't going to face a life time of people constantly commenting or being rude to you or them and if anyone is then who wants to know people like that anyway. I dont like some of the made up weirdly spelt names these days but it's not my business to tell people and actually how boring would it be if the whole world was only full of Olivia and Jacks.

bumblingmum · 05/04/2017 14:44

Your choice but think how upset you are getting now with comments about Noah for a girl and then imagine the lifetime of grief your dd will get with that name.
Obviously it's your choice but your dd has to live with it.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/04/2017 14:44

Was it Peaches Geldof that called her son Phaedra, that's a girls name.

Huskylover1 · 05/04/2017 14:44

Oh dear.

Noah is a boys name (to the vast majority of the population).

Your daughter will be bullied/taunted for it, her whole school life. And probably quite angry with you for saddling her with a masculine name, rather than something prettier.

Highmaintenancefemalestuff · 05/04/2017 14:45

My Dh chose Piper for our Dd. My mum hated it. When we found found out she was a girl my mum text me and told me to get him to change his mind. I said no I loved the name too.
My mum thought the name had been made up by us until we explained OITNB and she caught an episode of neighbours.
It wasn't up to her, she's got used to the name now, she had to! I wasn't going to change it to please others.
Call your children whatever you want, it doesn't matter what other people think.

expatinscotland · 05/04/2017 14:46

'I love Noah for a girl, I think it's beautiful. Far worse names out there quite frankly.'

What about Solomon, Jonah, Ezekiel, Ishmael the possibilities are endless!? They're all beautiful names with beautiful stories behind them.

user1489261248 · 05/04/2017 14:46

'Phoebe' just makes me think of the character from FRIENDS.

Cute name though. Smile

user1489261248 · 05/04/2017 14:47

PIPER is dead cute! Smile

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/04/2017 14:47

I named my DD after a TV character, just not the obvious one.

expatinscotland · 05/04/2017 14:47

'Was it Peaches Geldof that called her son Phaedra, that's a girls name.'

And we now know poor Peaches was using drugs, too.
