Am in my local Spoons. There is a beer festival (of sorts) and one of the beers is an Abbot Confession. It is a very strong ale at 8%.

So they only allow you to buy a half pint at a time. (Because it is very strong). But they will sell a bottle of wine (12%) and one glass. Like 50% stronger and more than a pint a go)

Am I getting grumpy ony old age (60this year)

although I can sort of see their logic you are right that really it doesn't make sense if they then sell a bottle of wine for someone to drink alone.

A firm reminder upon sale that it is double the strength of your average pint would be more understandable.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/04/2017 18:38

That makes no sense whatsoever if they're selling wine by the bottle. World gone mad.

JonStark · 04/04/2017 18:42

I suppose it's because people know how strong wine is likely to be, but with beer or ale you're more likely to forget it's strong and down as much as usual?

I agree a reminder each time should be enough though.

ForalltheSaints · 04/04/2017 18:44

I hope you said your prayers after the Abbot Confession. A Hail Mary and the Lord's Prayer twice at least.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 04/04/2017 18:47

Daints,
Sorry, said no prayers. (Hic)

Actually... didn't buy said beer if we are going to be treated like children.

But presumably they wouls sell you two half pints? As though you were ordering for two people. and then could drink both yourself?

It js a bjt mad though.

Asmoto · 04/04/2017 18:55

I agree with you OP. I'm a real ale fan and I think most people who trouble to buy real ale aren't out to get hammered as quickly as possible - they're savouring the experience. We need a [beer] icon on MNet, don't we? Grin

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 04/04/2017 19:24

Yes, they will sell two half pints. But not a pint. It is very poor thinking. I asked for just two drinks, a tonic water and the beer. So it is very obvious one of us would be drinking both half pints.

It a marketing tool...'ooh, this beer is so strong, and therefore special, we can only sell it in half-pints'.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 04/04/2017 19:54

Bloody hell, their heads would spin round if they came to Bavaria. We drink Starkbier by the litre and it's just as powerful.

Sirzy · 04/04/2017 20:41

I bet buying two halves would have cost more than buying one pint too?

Biker47 · 04/04/2017 21:00

Pint of vodka please...

Oneiroi · 04/04/2017 22:54

Better not to drink there at all, given who owns it.

ByGaslight · 04/04/2017 22:58

It's a marketing strategy.
