To ask how much debt you're in?

Just need cheering up really. In around £6000 worth of debt. Just wanna know what others people's debts are and if you are avoiding them or facing them. I am facing mine but the whole thing is really scary and overwhelming. I wish I were as sensible with money back then as I am now. I feel such a fool. What debts do you guys have?

Too much! Racked up mainly while husband was a student for 2 years but hoping it has been all worthwhile as he now has a job that in a few years should give him an income that will allow us to pay it off a lot quicker than we currently are!

propertypriceguide · 04/04/2017 20:49

Don't feel stupid OP, there are a few smug posters on here who don't understand how easy it can be to get into debt and it is soooo hard to get out of it.

Well done though and great on the smoking habit kicked!

We have a fair bit on credit cards and loans but decent salary to hopefully pay it off one day. It's all a bit subjective really though as some people's manageable debt is another person's totally unmanageable debt depending on other outgoings and income.

opinionatedfreak · 04/04/2017 20:51

Huge mortgage (but I can afford it) and 3k on a 0% credit card for a new sofa.

I have the money to pay for the sofa but it seemed better to keep it in premium bonds and use the 0% deal.

Flambola · 04/04/2017 20:51

This time last year I b would have said none, but now have a mortgage (80k), 4k personal loan for a car, and 1k on a cc (holiday!). All pretty manageable for the moment. Being very careful now so shouldn't rack up any more.

shesaidhello1 · 04/04/2017 20:52

I have just over 4K on credit cards, working v hard and saving like mad to hopefully have that paid off by end of year. DH has nearly 10k on credit cards but honestly I can't even think about that or it would drive me crazy. That's his to pay off. I plan to help him after I pay my off and have extra money left over. Together we have our mortgage.

Unihorn · 04/04/2017 20:53

We have a few thousand that we move around on interest free credit cards every two years or so. We're lucky to have stable jobs and good credit ratings however so it has been easy this far to manage. I try not to think about it though as I'm very much a 'you can't take it with you' sort of person.

OccasionalNachos · 04/04/2017 21:00

I think about 4K on a credit card - combination of a holiday & postgrad uni fees. Student loans of about £8k, slowly being paid off. And the mortgage, not sure how much is owed on that.

Eatingcheeseontoast · 04/04/2017 21:20

Borrowed £8k two years ago for greenhouse and new boiler and s holiday. £3k left to pay off in a year. Could probably pay that off in one payment but it's a cheap loan and as Dh has just lost his job I feel more comfortable keeping a bit of savings and paying this slowly.

wooster16 · 04/04/2017 21:30

Student loan, 5k (don't really consider this a proper debt tbh.)

Currently rent and saving for a mortgage so don't have any home related debts. Used to be in the overdraft vortex of hell and store cards so pretty happy with that!

IonaNE · 04/04/2017 21:31

None. And never had any. Bought every car etc. for cash. No mortgage, I rent.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 04/04/2017 21:32

About 5k Sad

delilahbucket · 04/04/2017 21:32

Now, nothing more than a mortgage. Ten years ago £22k unsecured in loans, credit cards, store cards, and overdraft. £6000, pah, that's nothing Wink. There's hope for you yet.

NerdyBird · 04/04/2017 21:36

We have a sizeable mortgage, about 1k on a credit card (due to be paid off) and my DP owes about 10k to his family.
We do have some savings but that will probably go in a year or two after we've paid for our wedding and work on our house.

We are aiming to remain relatively debt free for the rest of our lives so I'm planning to build up savings as much as poss after the essential work on our house is done.

rackhampearl · 04/04/2017 21:37

Thank you all for sharing and those few supportive comments I've read. Really expected to be flamed for getting myself into such a situation but I guess things like debt can make you feel shame and guilt. So just by not being flamed I feel better all ready Smile I can't wait to pay it all back and live within my means with no debt over my head. My life is how it should be now. I have an amazing coat from the charity shop that cost £1 and my daughters and I spent the day in the garden yesterday, a £20 spend on a plastic sand pit and two bags of sand and that was just like a little holiday. It was all the happiness I needed. We had the music on and they almost grew roots in that sandpit they spent the whole afternoon in it. £6000 is such a lot of money to me but hopefully my creditors will accept my offers of payment. Just waiting to hear back.

NerdyBird · 04/04/2017 21:38

relatively debt free apart from the mortgage, that is.

Ollycat · 04/04/2017 21:40

Mortgage paid off, no car loans etc or credit cards. Do have about £400 on a store card but that's it.

conkerpods · 04/04/2017 21:45

Mortgage
Credit card £2500
I have sofa and car on credit too (250 a month)

All my credit is 0% interest and mortgage is 2.69%

thriftynow · 04/04/2017 21:46

None. I pay off my credit card in full every month and don't have an overdraft facility. Mortgage is paid off. I have been in debt in the past, a result of crazy spending when manic, mainly. I now have strategies in place to avoid debt after slogging my guts out to get back in the black and restore my wrecked credit rating.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 04/04/2017 21:46

£10k. Slight overspending every month for years on stuff to make me feel happy eg new towels/new diet/new hairdo.

On paper I should be able to pay it off but it doesn't happen like that!

annandale · 04/04/2017 21:46

£8700, £7000 of which is student loan. The rest was spending too much on expensive experiences as presents for family members. Daft. It's £400 less than it was last month so am getting there. However, a year ago it was £700 less than it is now.

You've done absolutely amazingly giving up smoking - kudos. You will get there, hang on in and have faith.

babyinarms · 04/04/2017 21:47

Big Mortgage with 20 years left Hmm..... 1.2k on credit card...... 6k bank loan..... 45k bank loan.
Want to clear cc and 6k bank loan ASAP.
The 45k was for an extension.....don't regret it but definitely having sleepless nights over it!
Praying that neither of our ( old) cars pack in and that we can both stay working. On a mission to get debt under cotrol but not easy with 3 dcs !

thisagain · 04/04/2017 21:49

£26,000 mortgage. We have also just agreed a PCP for £129 pm month for 3 years on a car. No credit cards or other loans.

Oldraver · 04/04/2017 21:55

£183...but I've just got rid of some credit.....

witsender · 04/04/2017 22:00

About £140k mortgage with a fairly long term, we overpay a wee bit each month.

About £2k on interest free CC from replacing boiler in old flat.

sailorcherries · 04/04/2017 22:01

Between us OH and I have a mortgage of around £130k.

We both have our own cars on PCP but, given the contract, we can hand them back at the end of the term/trade in before hand. Although this is still a debt, I don't see it as being 'in' debt and owing money. I see it as more renting, we pay to use the service/good but don't need to clear off a set amount.

I also have student loans but being in Scotland I only have to repay them when I earn over a set amount and it's a set percentage of my wage over that amount. There is no demand to pay it back.
