To ask how much debt you're in?

rackhampearl · 04/04/2017 18:24

Just need cheering up really. In around £6000 worth of debt. Just wanna know what others people's debts are and if you are avoiding them or facing them. I am facing mine but the whole thing is really scary and overwhelming. I wish I were as sensible with money back then as I am now. I feel such a fool. What debts do you guys have?

OP posts:
MaidenMotherCrone · 04/04/2017 19:40

Nothing at all. My house is paid for and I'm terrified of debt.

feelingdizzy · 04/04/2017 19:43

Just the mortgage,no other debts.

Babyroobs · 04/04/2017 19:45

None, no mortgage but no savings either.

user1487519954 · 04/04/2017 19:47

About 45k on the mortgage, 25k in student loan.
Got about 20k in savings though, but it's not really worth paying off student loans.

jazzandh · 04/04/2017 19:48

It's relative.......we have ££££££and a sizeable mortgage but have a house with plenty of equity and a good income and savings -so it is serviceable.

Sometimes I stress about it ...but it will (probably) be paid off in the end.

It is what it is...try not to worry about it any more than you have to. There is other stuff far more important.

Me624 · 04/04/2017 19:52

Mortgage is about £240k, I don't really count that as debt though. There's plenty of equity in the house so it's not a net debt.

We have a car loan of about £18k, the repayment is £325 a month approx and if will be paid off in 4 years.

We do most of our spending each month on credit card and usually pay it off in full every month. However I have not long gone back to work after 9 months on statutory maternity pay and we have racked up rather more during that time. About £3k left to pay off I think, which we should be able to do in the next 2 months.

SabineUndine · 04/04/2017 19:53

Only my mortgage but I did have about 12K at one point in credit cards and overdraft. I'll never have a fucking credit card again, either. They are horrible things and the people that push them at you when they know you have debts are evil. At one point I was spending £200 a month servicing my debts and it was misery so I sympathise with you OP.

HermioneJeanGranger · 04/04/2017 19:57

Nothing.

thedcbrokemybank · 04/04/2017 20:05

About 2k overdraft and credit card combined. Should be paid off in a few months. 8k left of car loan which will be paid off in a year and a half.
Mortgage too but once everything else paid off I would like to overpay.

Dumbo412 · 04/04/2017 20:07

I am currently in 30k of debt. My husband got credit cards and loans in my name, plus didn't pay any household bills and a car in my name which he swanned about in whilst I sat at home where there wasnt even electric.

We split up and I've started paying it off. Will take a while, but I'll be debt Free one day in the very distant future!

pointythings · 04/04/2017 20:09

About £300 on credit card, which will be paid off at the end of this month as per usual. No mortgage. PCP car loan - £380/month. We have a pretty decent income so can easily afford this.

IamNotDarling · 04/04/2017 20:10

Just mortgage here.

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 04/04/2017 20:11

Just the mortgage that's left, if we can't afford something we don't have it.

Plenty of friends have debt due to wanting things but not being able to afford them.

limon · 04/04/2017 20:16

£89000 Mortgage, £1500 car loan about to be increased to £4k as car is dying

GrandDesespoir · 04/04/2017 20:16

None at all. No mortgage. Worked hard to pay it off - not a particularly high earner. Pay credit cards off in full every month, but use them a lot to accrue benefits like air miles / points towards vouchers.

ImogenTubbs · 04/04/2017 20:17

Not sure if this will cheer you up either... Got about £18k credit card debt (mostly on 0% interest for another year). I'm paying £500 a month off them at the mo which is a big chunk of my income. I do have a lot of equity across three properties I own so on balance I'm well in the black. It's manageable at the moment and I'm determined to make a dent in them. Oh, I also have £2k overdraft right now as Jan/Feb/March were stupidly expensive but will clear that in two to three months.

No point in feeling stupid - you're certainly not alone. Good luck!

stumblymonkeyremix · 04/04/2017 20:19

£4800 loan
£1500 car finance
£4000 credit card
£3400 overdraft

= £13,700

But that's about 10% of my income so not too concerned. By this time next year loan and car finance will be paid off and just about to focus on paying credit card off at least £1k over next two months and £500 off overdraft.

I owed £34k (with no car) 2.5 years ago!

Laiste · 04/04/2017 20:25

None.

Would love a mortgage Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 04/04/2017 20:25

About £400.

BonnieF · 04/04/2017 20:31

No debts except our mortgage, which we are overpaying.

We choose to live within our means. If we need something, we buy it from savings if possible or use the cheapest possible finance.

If we want something, we save up for it or go without. No exceptions. Buying stuff you don't need with money you haven't got is stupid.

This may not be the most exciting approach, but it has served us well.

PinkDaffodil2 · 04/04/2017 20:32

£38k student loan, £5k on 0% balance transfer cards from DP doing a postgrad qualification for 9 months, £1k overdrawn on old student account (interest free until July), £1.5k on credit card - interest free until July. Hoping to get the last two paid off in next few months before DP goes back to study for a final year. Interest free all has several years left so just paying minimum for now.

ninnypoo · 04/04/2017 20:36

about £45k of student loans I'm paying off at a grand total of £24 a month. That's it.

Fruu · 04/04/2017 20:37

About a tenner on my credit card, which I usually only use for big purchases for the added consumer protection and pay off in full every month. I've never had any real debt - my parents are frugal and don't believe in spending any money you don't have, so I grew up with that mentality really. I lived in very cheap manky house shares until I could buy a house in cash, primarily so that I didn't have to take out a mortgage.

I understand that mortgage / career development / business loans etc are a necessary evil for most people though and that I'm unusual! I don't talk about my finances IRL unless I'm asked and it's someone who will take the answer well - I've had people trying to freeload off me before when they find out I'm not permanently overdrawn like they are.

wannabestressfree · 04/04/2017 20:38

I was the same as carodos I am afraid and my mum was appalling with cash. I spent years even when I was married bailing them out and paying their mortgage, new boiler etc. I really equated money with happiness where ever it came from and she used to sulk if refused and make my life hell. I am nc due to something horrendous she did to me (involving money) which is really outing.

I am now seriously ill. Still working and just about to move to a very cheap housing association property. I now realise what makes me happy and have paid off most of my debts with the others to follow asap.

Don't be hard on yourself but chip away at it. The real cost of debt is not worth the price unless you can be super disciplined.... which I know I am not :)

DustyMaiden · 04/04/2017 20:41
