To think this is excessive

People who drink daily

Even if it's "just" a couple

You are being unreasonable.

MatildaTheCat · 04/04/2017 12:18

Unless it is yourself YABU because it's none of your business.

Wolfiefan · 04/04/2017 12:18

Daily drinking isn't healthy. It's best to have some days off to give your body chance to recover. A couple of pints could be 4 units. That's 28 a week. Too many.

edwinbear · 04/04/2017 12:19

It is for me, because I don't have an 'off' button. So for me, anything other than drinking very, very rarely is excessive. For people with a more normal attitude to alcohol it's up to them to determine.

xStefx · 04/04/2017 12:24

DP drinks about 2 or 3 bottles of beer a night. I have recently given up drinking coke (2 or 3 cans a night)
I think the coke was doing more damage to me that the beer is to him but I have asked him to pick 1 or 2 nights a week where he has a night off so his liver can have a rest. I wouldn't say his drinking is excessive but I don't particularly like him drinking every night as it means I have to drive if we go anywhere. He doesn't open a bottle till 7pm though.

Trifleorbust · 04/04/2017 12:29

It is against NHS guidelines, so in that sense it is 'excessive', but 1-2 drinks of a normal size daily doesn't strike me as Henry VIII style licentiousness. Hmm

alltouchedout · 04/04/2017 12:33

Meh, some weeks I drink daily- but it's only ever stretching a bottle of wine out over a whole week, so still under the nhs advised limit.
Other weeks I don't drink anything at all on 6 nights and have a whole bottle on one. Same weekly amount consumed but I definitely think the second option is the least healthy.

Jemimapiddleduck · 04/04/2017 12:34

But if you have to have to every night that has got to be a bad sign.

I also don't know many who ONLY have a couple every night. More like 5+ in the weekends the 1-3 Monday then a few more etc

It's my partner it is my business. However I come from a family of non drinkers. His parents drink every night.

OP posts:
Trifleorbust · 04/04/2017 12:48

How much does he drink nightly? You say you don't know anyone who just has one. Well, I don't think just having one nightly is an issue. What your DP is drinking may be an issue, but that is frequency and amounts combined.

redshoeblueshoe · 04/04/2017 12:49

So not a match made in heaven Grin
Seriously if you are so bothered dump him. he will be relieved you are not monitoring his every drink

ExplodedCloud · 04/04/2017 12:55

Does anybody who has the ability to drink 1 or 2 units each night and no more have a dependency problem? I wouldn't have thought so?

luckylucky24 · 04/04/2017 12:55

It takes me about 4/5 days to drink a bottle of wine. That's by having a glass every night. I think yabu.

LoupGarou · 04/04/2017 13:02

YABU, I thought it had been proven that a small glass of red wine daily was beneficial for health?

Trifleorbust · 04/04/2017 13:05

I actually don't think YABU, because I don't think you are talking about someone who has one small glass of wine a night. Your last post suggests it's more like 'a few drinks' every night, which adds up. I'm not saying I would necessarily be horrified if someone did have 2-3 drinks every night or whatever, but it isn't the same thing as choosing to drink a bottle of red over a week.

Brokejoke · 04/04/2017 13:07

I think it is too much. I know many will disagree. But I had two alcoholic parents so accept my views have been affected by this.

Brokejoke · 04/04/2017 13:08

Two "functional" alcoholic parents, I should say. They only drank in the evenings.

Wolfiefan · 04/04/2017 13:14

If you have to drink then you are alcohol dependant.
Regularly drinking every single day suggests an unhealthy reliance on alcohol.

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 13:19

men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis

spread your drinking over three or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week

www.nhs.uk/Livewell/alcohol/Pages/alcohol-units.aspx

So two drinks a night would be a problem.

If the person in question could not miss the alcohol, even for something important like taking medication, driving or preparing for an operation, there would be a problem.

I had a great-great aunt who had one tot of whisky every night before bed. She was healthy in her eighties and had never been drunk in her life.

It all depends whether one has the propensity to alcoholism or not.

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 13:19

*Two drinks a night WOULD NOT be a problem ffs!!!!!!

Should have proof-read...!!!!!!!

TheBookIsOnTheTable · 04/04/2017 13:23

I think it undoubtedly is excessive. But people are free to do whatever they want. Lots of people do unhealthy things to excess (eating being the big one) - freedom of choice and all that though isn't it. None of my business.

elkegel · 04/04/2017 13:26

YANBU. The question is whether is is reasonable to say that level of consumption is excessive. It is.

The question is not whether people ought to do it nor whether they have the freedom to.

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 04/04/2017 13:27

Depends on their relationship to you. Unless they're in your "solar system" of family or friends or teachers or employers/employees, then it pretty much doesn't matter what you or any of us think. I say this as someone who has lost two next-of-kin family members in their early sixties to alcoholism-related sclerosis of the liver, is likely to lose a third in her fifties soon, and doesn't see good things for a fourth. They were all "just social drinkers" who would have a drink every day, and then two, and then have a bit more at the weekend, and it just gradually progressed from there, so from my perspective, any sustained habit of drinking on a daily or near-daily basis does not look promising. My perspective is heavily warped by my experiences though, as you can imagine.

Willow2017 · 04/04/2017 13:36

YABU if you are referring to everyone in the country who only have a glass a night maybe with a meal.
If you are referring to your partner who has a lot of alcohol every night then you have a point. It totally depends on how much alcohol is involved.

I often have a glass every night for about 5 days as thats how long it takes me to drink a bottle of wine. If I dont have wine in the house then I dont care about it. So if you asked me this week do you drink every night I would say "Yes" cos I won a bottle of wine in a raffle at the weekend. But I might not have another from friday to next Tuesday when I go shopping and buy another bottle!

fzz33 · 04/04/2017 13:38

I had a friend who was flagged as a 'problem alcoholic' by the nhs because he drank 1-2 bottles of Becks every single night - 1.3-2.6 units. Never got drunk, never drank more than that, but he was given that label as consistent drinking every day is seen as more damaging than days off + excessive binges.

AnneElliott · 04/04/2017 13:45

I think it's too much, and would have concerns of it was my partner.
