I run a small business making bridal hair accessories.
I've been contacted to create a headpiece that matches this woman's bouquet, and she needs it by next weekend. (Rush orders for weddings are astonishingly common, but thats a whole other thread!)

She asks for a quote, which I provide. In retrospect, I massively under-quoted as I wasn't thinking straight, but obviously can't go back on that now, but I'm already losing out when you factor in the time taken to make the piece (I quoted £21 and its at least 3 hours + work, I'm an idiot).

I set up a custom order for her (Etsy) but she's refusing the pay for the piece, or a deposit, until she's seen photos of the finished item, in case she doesn't like it. I can kind of see where she is coming from but I can't really afford to spend hours designing and making something without at least a deposit to barely cover the material costs.

AIBU?

She's getting very stressed as her wedding is next weekend and I feel really guilty as she's saying this is spoiling her big day.

I'm in the process of cancelling and refunding. The whole thing has been, unsurprisingly, a complete headache from start to finish. Lots of emails very late into the night - notably one at midnight last night and then another 2 hours later demanding to know why I hadn't replied to the midnight one - I was asleep!

Good news is that I went to an interview this morning and have just received a job offer! So things are looking up!

Ohhh, well done Charlie!

Good news on the job OP. I mean this nicely but I think the lesson here is that if you're running your own business, you have to be prepared to be a bit of a hardass sometimes if you are going to actually make any money. It doesn't suit everyone.

CharliesSister · 05/04/2017 13:34

Thanks Smile

Exactly, Buttery I'm normally pretty good, not the toughest person out there clearly but do okay. This last 6 weeks have been truly awful though so I've been making a fair few mistakes!

Great news, Charlie! Do not back down. Give her the money back tell her you got a job and you are no longer available. Ignore all whinging or whatever. Not your circus, not your monkeys.

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 05/04/2017 13:43

Many congratulations OP, well deserved on the job offer, and rightly done on the headpiece. I hope the path continues upwards and onwards for you. Smile

I would still love to see pics of your work, but not if you don't fell comfortable or its too outing.

Fauxgina · 05/04/2017 17:29

Congratulations on your new job and for refunding! Right decision.

Jux · 05/04/2017 17:36

Congratulations on the job offer.

Do not tell the silly woman anything, it is none of her business whether you're employed or not. If she insists on an explanation, then "demanding to know at 2am why I haven't replied to your midnight email" is enough.

RaspberryOverloadsOnChilli · 05/04/2017 20:34

Congratulations on the job, and let's hope this silly woman now goes away.
