To have already noticed prices rising?

It's just a few things but since Xmas I've started to notice certain things costing more, some examples, I was given a nice bottle of wine from M&S which was £13, it's now £14. Also Body shop Chamomile cleansing oil was £10, is now £12 ( tho got it with a 40%off code)

Is this the start of the cost of living rising or are these isolated incidents?

Cost of living is rising. Inflation is now above 2% Bank Of England target; the pound plummeted after the EU referendum and has not recovered, so all imported goods are now permanently more expensive. Meanwhile wages aren't keeping pace with inflation and savings rates are at lows not seen since Northern Rock collapsed (so get ready for a credit crisis)

Brexit means Brexit and we're going to write a cheque for it.

Meekonsandwich · 01/04/2017 22:34

This has been happening for years and years. Freddos.
Butter, chocolate bars, bottles of drink, all smaller but the same price to same money.

BouleBaker · 01/04/2017 22:36

I've noticed too. Everything is going up.

It's only going to get worse though so get used to it.

CakesAreBiscuitsToo · 01/04/2017 22:38

Yep, sadly what britbat23 says is true.

Hold the fuck on because it is only going to get worse.

eurochick · 01/04/2017 22:39

We import a large amount of what we use and the pound has tanked. It's to be expected.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 01/04/2017 22:40

It'll get worse unfortunately.

megletthesecond · 01/04/2017 22:45

Yes. I'm on a mission to grow as much as I can from now on.

thenightsky · 01/04/2017 22:47

I've noticed that even Lidl and Aldi prices have gone up.

HeadDreamer · 01/04/2017 22:51

I have noticed too. The first thing was the cat biscuits. Also my weekly shop has gone up.

scaryteacher · 01/04/2017 22:57

Prices are also going up in Belgium.....and Sainsbury's was still cheaper last week than Carrefour this week.

BWatchWatcher · 01/04/2017 22:59

Thanks so much Brexiteers.

RortyCrankle · 01/04/2017 22:59

Can you tell me a year in the last fifty when prices didn't go up or products shrink? No? Thought not. I used to pay 1/9d a gallon for a gallon of petrol. Oh I see the price has gone up - must be Brexit's fault Hmm

NotStoppedAllDay · 01/04/2017 23:00

All our prices ( and competitors) went up when the pound plummeted.

It was expected

We had 40,000 price changes to do!

CaptainBrickbeard · 01/04/2017 23:03

Erm, why do you think the pound has plummeted, Rorty? That's why the prices have gone up and yes, it's thanks to Brexit. And yes, it will get worse. Do you honestly think it hasn't had a financial effect? Do you not realise that it will take further toll on the economy? I thought the Brexiteers had given up denying that and were all just insisting that somehow it will be worth the cost.

Valentine2 · 01/04/2017 23:05

I started a thread about this some time ago. Since then, I have seen quite a few very high changes in price of everyday items in terms of % increase in their value.
A friend works in retail at a very good position. She tells us it's just the beginning. I think £ took a big hit and it's hasn't recovered send no chances of it coming back apparently.
But we are getting the control back so hey ho swashbucklers go..

scaryclown · 01/04/2017 23:14

Overall though, prices haven't gone up much for 20 years, but sadly neither have wages :( certainly goods from Europe have gone up, and local furniture, nicknack (and paddywhack? (😁)) shops are having to sneak their prices up.

Produce is likely to go up as so much comes from Spain, Portugal etc, so low pay, higher food costs, higher luxury good costs.. and the £ in pocket worth less globally too... And a market that will be more open to US style cheap labour practices (like those at Amazon) lovely.

Yes i predict another crisis too, but more of a spending one as markets adjust to essentials-only spending for majority of population. I can't predict house prices though..Demand is said to be increasing with supply going up too, but i can tell that some schemes where i live will probably only be approved in five years or more (and if history is repeating, will give an oversupply just when one isn't needed...

JumpingJellybeanz · 01/04/2017 23:15

Yes. Since 1989 prices have dropped in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and in 2014 according to the ONS.

DentistWimp · 01/04/2017 23:19

I work in the import / export industry - brace yourself for a Recession.

relaxo · 01/04/2017 23:20

Packet sizes are shrinking rapidly too.

VanillaSugar · 01/04/2017 23:23

Mini eggs: this year they are 90grams a packet. Surely they should /used to be 100 grams? A bit of a flippant example, I'm afraid.

Destinysdaughter · 01/04/2017 23:24

Ok so it's not just me then. Didn't post this in the EU topic as not wanting a bunfight, just wanted to check it wasn't just me

Fuck Brexit tho...

OP posts:
CremeEggThief · 01/04/2017 23:25

Definitely. A pint of milk was 59p in the corner shop on Thursday Shock. A few weeks ago, it was 49p.

AgathaRaisonDetra · 01/04/2017 23:26

I know OP - you can't argue with stupid Sad

Veronicat · 01/04/2017 23:32

Our weekly shopping bill has definitely risen in Aldis and no pay rise for me. The gin has had to go!

Livelovebehappy · 01/04/2017 23:37

Well done Agatha. First insult thrown and not got past page 1 of the thread yet. You Remainers are so predictable - OP might not want a bunfight, but seems you do.
