To have already noticed prices rising?

It's just a few things but since Xmas I've started to notice certain things costing more, some examples, I was given a nice bottle of wine from M&S which was £13, it's now £14. Also Body shop Chamomile cleansing oil was £10, is now £12 ( tho got it with a 40%off code)

Is this the start of the cost of living rising or are these isolated incidents?

Coffee - £6.50 for naice instant today in Morrisons. Er, I'll do without.

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 18:48

No, you are not alone HaveCourageAndBeKind Mine has fallen too, although some luxury items such as chocolate, coffee, crisps etc have increased significantly over the last couple of years.

Meat is the lowest in ages, cereals are fairly good, bread is a third cheaper than it was during the recession and I am getting some quality wines for around £3.60 per bottle also loo roll and cleaning products are very reasonable.
My recommendation? Buy coffee and chocolate etc in bulk when on offer, it makes a big difference and I might be stating the obvious, but avoid brands unless you cant do without them.

Also Buy seasonally. (why on earth people expect "vibrant salads" all year round is beyond me!)

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 18:51

Interestingly, of course the Eu member states are not terribly well known for their coffee/Cocoa bean production, So I would be quite surprised if Brexit was a specific factor there!

justinelibertine · 03/04/2017 20:07

Ohhh shut up!!! Grin Flumpernickel

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 20:38

Grin Brew

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 20:39

Btw... nescafe gold blend barista is on offer at tesco atm, £5 instead of £6.80. Stock up if you love that one!

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 20:40

Buy 4 and thats a free tin! (ish) Wink

justinelibertine · 03/04/2017 20:44

I shall have to swing buy Tesco. I usually get nescafe Azera. I had a meltdown and got mellow birds instead.

BeyondUser24601 · 03/04/2017 20:45

I buy value fruit for the kids for school, usually 50p a packet. First the packets shrunk, but stayed at 50p, then last week the price shot up to 90p Shock

Frouby · 03/04/2017 20:53

Coffee is one thing I have noticed increasing drastically. Carte Noir which I usually buy has rebranded to something else but has gone up to £6.50 for a big jar.

We have switched to aldi recently so not noticed other things increasing but the odd branded thing we do buy has been noticeable. Cans of carling lager in big packs have reduced from 20 cans to 18. And sanpro is more expensive as is shampoo and conditioner.

I did half listen to something sunday morning I think it was saying the the £ has been undervalued since brexit and should start to increase against the $ and € again but only half heard it as ds was clung to my leg.

I don't think the prolonged process of triggering A50 has helped. Perhaps now it has happened the £ will strengthen again. I voted remain and am just trying to see a positive.

justinelibertine · 03/04/2017 21:05

Funny you should mention shampoo and conditioner, at my morrisons loreal elvive is always £2 in a blaze of glory price cut. At my mum's morrisons, in a more affluent (in parts) area it's £2.50 in the same blaze of glory price cut. I was quite shocked.

toots111 · 03/04/2017 21:27

Everyone who is saying 'well coffee isn't grown in Europe so don't blame Brexit' obviously doesn't understand the currency markets and the fact that the devaluation of the pound against pretty much every currency following the vote (and predicted by all the economic experts) means that EVeRYTHING imported will end up costing more. And add to that the increasing costs of food production in the UK when we send all the migrants home and British people insist on more than minimum wage to do some if these shitty jobs. These are things that I'm not surprised people don't know about but again infuriates me that we had a referendum on something that is actually pretty complex and has such far reaching and complicated implications, and the arguments basically boiled down to 'get rid of foreigner/give money to nhs' vs 'you're all racist'. Sigh. David Cameron you Bellend. Ok I know this isn't a brexit thread so no you're not being unreasonable, things are going up and lots more to come!

Sylvannas · 03/04/2017 21:34

Prices have been going up for years! For soooooh many things. Won't comment on the Brexit situation. Too early for any changes due to the uncertainty while it all gets negotiated to become permanent. I was however deeply saddened by the Freddo situation. Cadbury have alot to answer for! Confound them!

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 21:53

Hmmm... going off on a 'oh so' predictable tangent much?

when we send all the migrants home and British people insist on more than minimum wage to do some if these shitty jobs. What on earth are you talking about? Who is sending ALL OF THE migrants home? Hmm. Pretty sure this OP was about price rises! The EU ref topic is this way

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 21:54

Sorry, quote fail!

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 21:58

And I reiterate... Coffee was on the rise before brexit, so in this context has FUCK ALL to do with it. That does not however dispute that other markets, can and may be impacted by brexit. Oh, BTW, I heard Tesco are also selling extra strong grips on Bogoff... get yourself over there asap toots.

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 22:00

Scrub that... found you a better deal toots.

a nice bottle of wine from M&S which was £13, it's now £14.

What??! I get a litre here in EU for 4 Euros.... really good wine it is too.

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 22:02

Cant beat that stonking deal IFLy TBF! , but quite enjoying the aldi wine cases! Average £3.60/£4.00 per decent bottle and free delivery! WineSmile

Imjustapoorboy · 03/04/2017 22:07

Even facts about price rises are ignored

Ok

Ragdoll545 · 03/04/2017 22:07

I work in a sales office, we are being told to put our prices up even though our cost prices have remained the same purely so we can make more profit and the company line is to blame brexit, I suspect most companies are doing the same

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 22:16

IMA if you are referring to me, do feel free to re-read ALL of my posts.

Flumpernickel · 03/04/2017 22:17

See... this I suspect is the main reason. Shock horror? PROFITEERING.

toots no argument from me that a referendum on such a complex issue was a stupid idea. And now sturgeon wants to do the same, again!

Unless we really are governed by lunatics , no one is going to send all the migrants home. Any more than tarquin and jocasta will be stopped from going on swill and spew trips to magaluf, or even from working there.

The pound dropping obviously makes imports pricier. But it is also a fact that brexit is only one factor in the madness that is economics.
