Applying make up in public?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic...

I was in a naice department store cafe in Oxford today (not debenhams, think more the one where you buy your knickers or have an emergency poo) and was just grabbing a quick coffee before an appointment I needed to be alert for and given that I had been deprived of sleep the night before due to kids who seemed to be tag teaming to ensure I got as little sleep as possible I decided to whip out my little make up bag and apply some much needed concealer and mascara in an effort to look less like a zombie. I was obliviously faffing away in a corner seat and there was a couple of women (I'm 29, I'd guess they were late 50's early 60's) who were looking over rather distastefully and tutting loudly. I smiled and one of the women asked me if my mother had never told me it was rude to apply make up in public and the other lady chimed in with "its common". Well my mother clearly dragged me up as she has utterly failed to inform me that its uncouth and "common" to apply my make up in public. I could understand it if I'd brushed my hair or sprayed perfume but I thought sitting quietly in a corner with a wee compact was fairly unoffensive but apparently not...I just wondered if its true that it is deemed impolite? Should I have snuck off to the loo's or is it ok to powder ones nose in a naice cafe?

That response kinda proves my point. The corner of the cafe wasn't that quiet otherwise you would not have been commented on by the 2 narky ladies. It is intimate because it is personal grooming, a private moment between you and a mirror. You gazing into a mirror applying foundation, can make people - not all people - but some people, feel awkward. The fact that you choose to ignore that is a little bit arrogant. Sorry.

Oh my goodness, my mum had the 'going out with wet hair' taboo too... 😄😄😄

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 31/03/2017 20:09

It's something I would avoid but it doesn't offend me if others do it. They were both rude.

I see women applying make up on the tube on an almost daily basis. What saddens me is why most of them feel the need to do so, not because of where, but because the vast majority look better before they cake themselves.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 31/03/2017 22:45

Oh this made me laugh. I have been known to apply lippy discreetly without a mirror in public. I would love someone to challenge me for this. I have very fair skin and a bit of lippy makes me look slightly more alive, it's important - so there.

Another 60 year old wishing to dissociate with the very rude women who criticised you. As others have said there's nothing less well mannered than pointing out the (perceived) faux pas of others. But old hags? Now that's just bloody ageist and rude of that PP.

thegoodnameshadgone · 31/03/2017 23:28

My mum is 60 she'd have a shit fit of being labelled an old hag lol. She's out every weekend with my dad who's 65 and they are much more lively than I am. As are her six or so friends who go out with them. At 20. I thought 40 was ancient. I'm nearing 40 and still feel 20 ConfusedConfused the body changes eh the mind doesn't

thegoodnameshadgone · 31/03/2017 23:29

But crack on with the make up. Imagine if you were breast feeding aswell hahah 😂😂

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 31/03/2017 23:34

Celia Johnson used a compact throughout Brief Encounter. It is not common at all but rather elegant. I may have made this up

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 31/03/2017 23:53

Years ago, I read that it was ok to use a compact and lipstick in public as long as they were high end and in beautiful packaging, so a gold ysl lippy and compact were fine but a No 17 plastic combo were not.
I took not a fuckworth of notice but it's stayed in my head.
The women were very rude though to make you feel uncomfortable.

Hi
I decided to create some space in roof and so we made a dormer loft and for extra space we joined our loft space with the neighbours.their loft already done from before. Now the problems we saw when builders did the tiling , is that our tiles are overlapping neighbours tiles which they are complaining about and i can see also it looks horrible. Can we please get some ideas and suggestions how to get it fixed while builders ate still here.

Poos are only ever for home

err what? What if you aren't at home when the need arises?!

Jamiefraserskilt · 19/05/2018 00:10

Guilty as charged. Will powder and lippy in public.
Watched a girl on a train the other week do the full monty with foundation, brushes, defining cream, blusher, lippy, mascara, the lot. She was sitting with three strangers at a table. My gran would have flipped, I was fascinated. She did an excellent job of going from natural beauty to painted lady in fifteen minutes flat.
