I was at primary school in the early 90s. I don't remember any lunchbox police at all. For years I took in coleslaw sandwiches (I can't stand coleslaw now), a flask of orange squash, a packet of crisps and a kitkat.

Seventies- sandwich, fish paste, wrapped in newspaper which left print on the bread.

soundsystem · 30/03/2017 16:03

Sandwich: white bread, marg, cheese

Packet of salt and vinegar crisps

Carton of Um Bongo

Two finger kitkat or one finger Twix

Quite different from what I give DD!

Late 90's early 00's. A sandwich (corn beef/cheese), muller yogurt, apple, penguin/blue ribband.

DramaAlpaca · 30/03/2017 16:05

I was at primary school in the early 70s and we had school dinners.

Also had school dinners at secondary. There were only a handful of pupils who brought packed lunches. In 6th form I used to go home for lunch occasionally.

IJustWantABrew · 30/03/2017 16:07

Had or cheese and pickle sandwich on white bread, bag of crisps and chocolate bar, Drink of squash to wash all that down with. No fruit.
Fairly sure if my kids took that to school these days they would be sent home with a note all about healthy eating.

lalaloopyhead · 30/03/2017 16:07

I wasn't allowed packed lunch at primary but at secondary I had - peanut butter/Jam/Marmite sandwich, crisps, club or similar, an apple and a flask of squash or coffee (!) That was mid to late 80's.

mayoli · 30/03/2017 16:07

A cheese and marmite sandwich, a hard boiled egg (used to smell awful though), and a piece of fruit.

robinia · 30/03/2017 16:08

No-one had packed lunches at my primary school. A very few went home for lunch and all the rest of us had a set meal school dinner.
At secondary school probably about a quarter had packed lunch. I wasn't one of them. School dinners were good. This was all in the 70s.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 30/03/2017 16:12

There was a hoo hah at our school about leaking squash and they banned drinks. Many of us hated school water (what is it about those jugs?) so after a bit of negotiating with one girl's family whose parents were teachers and they were always the awkward buggers we were allowed to take powdered squash. Yummy. Who knew such a thing existed! It was worse than the water but the taste of the victory was sweet.

jay55 · 30/03/2017 16:14

In the 80's Marmite sandwich, satsuma or apple, penguin and crisps.

But then the teachers went on strike and I was forced to have school dinners for the rest of my time at school an it was hell.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 30/03/2017 16:16

I can't remember at which stage of these negotiations it was decreed we could take ROUGHNECK FLASKS after some flask breaking episodes. I loved my Snoopy flask.

Soubriquet · 30/03/2017 16:18

Powdered squash? Never heard of it

theSnuffster · 30/03/2017 16:19

Sandwiches- usually paste or luncheon meat I think. Packet of crisps. A penguin bar. Yoghurt- Mum regularly forgot to put a spoon in. One time my brother and I had the spoons but no yoghurt!

reallyanotherone · 30/03/2017 16:21

Sandwich and a penguin. Occasionally a thermos of soup.

I remember being starving. So envious of friends with crisps!

tinypop4 · 30/03/2017 16:22

early 90s also. A ham or cheese sandwich usually with white bread, a WagonWheel (remember those?!) or a penguin or a club, a packet of crisps and a bit of fruit which I normally ignored.

iklboo · 30/03/2017 16:24

Luncheon meat sandwich on white bread with piccalilli
Salt & vinegar XL crisps (brand name not size)
Blue Riband biscuit or a Penguin
Carton of orange squash

Fishbiscuits · 30/03/2017 16:24

I was at school in the 80s / early 90s and got a wholemeal bread sandwich (usually ham I think) carrot sticks and a piece of cheese (wrapped in greaseproof paper so it went all sweaty) and fruit. I felt so deprived, as all my friends had white bread, trio or club bars and crisps for lunch.

StrawbRhi · 30/03/2017 16:28

Half a peanut butter sandwich (one slice of bread) and a penguin or club biscuit. Water from the school canteen to drink.
We were very poor and I was very hungry Sad

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/03/2017 16:31

Mid/late 80's
White bread sandwich with ham/cheese, crisps from a supermarket multipack, ditto yoghurt and Apple or satsuma. Flask of squash.
Not many people had packed lunch, it was mainly in summer when we could sit outside to eat.
Most people had school dinners and ate it or didn't but honestly, I don't think parents got tied up in knots over it, if they didn't eat it, they got given a bigger tea, but I honestly don't recall anyone crying or making a fuss because they didn't like the food.
Hardly anyone ate the liver, it was disgusting but we'd eat round it, have the dessert and that was that.

I think there's far too much pandering now.

GoodDayToYou · 30/03/2017 16:33

Primary School lunches were the best! We didn't take sandwiches then, we had delicious, cooked dinners!! Usually a roast with a scrummy pudding. Lots of custard and seconds of everything!! (I ran everywhere in those days.)

GoodDayToYou · 30/03/2017 16:35

PS It was the 70s. We had free milk at break too. Smile

SaveMeBarry · 30/03/2017 16:36

Tiny you can still buy wagon wheels although as with all the confectionery I remember from childhood, they're smaller now Smile

80s and early 90s here. Jam sandwich or cheese (not real cheese - easi singles) on cheap white sandwich bread, a small choc bar or small bag of supermarket crisps and an apple. A bit more in secondary school, maybe two sandwiches or a flask of powdered packet soup. So shite basically!

PickAChew · 30/03/2017 16:36

A cheese, dairylea, peanut butter, luncheon meat or shiphams paste sandwich with something like a penguin or a piece of home made cake, if there was some plus a roughneck flask of coffee or tupperware beaker of orange squash.

CheeseQueen · 30/03/2017 16:49

OMG, I used to love meat paste sandwiches. Not had one for years and now want one! Smile
I had packed lunches and remember jam or cheese sandwiches on white bread, fruit, and a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar such as Breakaway, Wagon Wheel, Club or Trio.
Sometimes crisps AND chocolate. (Lunchbox Police would probably have a fit if you gave both now!)
Not allowed chocolate in packed lunches at the kid's primary here anyway. Hmm
