I was at primary school in the early 90s. I don't remember any lunchbox police at all. For years I took in coleslaw sandwiches (I can't stand coleslaw now), a flask of orange squash, a packet of crisps and a kitkat.

Corn beef or sardine sandwiches or fish paste, weak squash, and a pepperami, or Dairylea, and a piece of fruit. This was the 80's btw.

shirleycartersaidso · 30/03/2017 14:39

Marmite or ham sandwich, packet of crisps and a penguin / club / blue ribband type and biscuit. Box of raisins for morning snack. Flask of water. Sometimes I used to have a little box of cubes cheese and apple, that was an adventurous day!

Left school in 97.

TheRealPooTroll · 30/03/2017 14:39

Kids move around a lot less now though so I can see why they need to be eating less calories.

Dinosaurus86 · 30/03/2017 14:41

Typically ham sandwiches, bag of hula hoops, penguin, flask of orange squash. 90s. If I was lucky I might also get a pot of yogurt or a satsuma. Nobody checked our lunches.

blubberball · 30/03/2017 14:42

Secondary school was even worse, mid to late 90s, and I just lived on junk. Sunny delight, coke, chocolate bars, pizza, super noodles, ready meals. My dad moved out, and my mum worked late, so I was left to my own devices and "cooked" my own dinners. I was very skinny back then though. I walked long distances to and from school/friend's houses, and did PE.

I wasn't allowed packed lunches at primary as dad could eat in the very heavily subsidised canteen at work, and mum got a free lunch for doing playground duty. At secondary school though, I had ryvita and sandwich spread, followed by an apple for about 5 years - my mum had by then agreed we could have packed lunch if she didn't have to think about it or buy anything special. And if anyone did look at our lunch, we had strict instructions to say it was all our own doing!

1nsanityscatching · 30/03/2017 14:43

Mid eighties I was in sixth form so made my own (mum had died so I'd shopped as well) Ham or chicken salad sandwich on white bread, carton of schloer red grape, fruit of some description and either crisps/ piece of cake/chocolate biscuit. I made younger brother and sisters' lunches too and they would have had the same but with cheese sometimes. Reasonably good for the times tbh.

wineusuallyhelps · 30/03/2017 14:43

Early 80s. A wholemeal bread sandwich, an apple and a cereal bar. Plus squash.

ThereIsIron · 30/03/2017 14:43

Paste or jam on white bread sandwich, club or united biscuit, occasionally packet of crisps. Norn Iron late 70's

loveisenough · 30/03/2017 14:44

I was at Primary school in the 70s and as far as I remember everyone had school dinners every day - chicken fricassee, mint custard, Australian crunch.........

SpaghettiMeatballs · 30/03/2017 14:44

A white bread ham sandwich, a bag of crisps and 5p to buy a paper cup of squash from the trolley.

Early 80's.

PollyPerky · 30/03/2017 14:45

I was at school in the 1960s. It was school dinners or walking home- mile each way- for lunch. I did both at different times.

Violetcharlotte · 30/03/2017 14:46

Mid to late 80's - sandwiches, usually white bread, with something like cheese and tomato, tuns or marmite, crisps, fruit or yogurt, chocolate bar or piece of cake. All nice and warm by lunchtime as no lunch coolers back then. Squash in a leaky flask.

Thumbcat · 30/03/2017 14:46

80's
Bovril sandwich & Munch Bunch banana yoghurt.

Monkeyinshoes · 30/03/2017 14:47

Cheese (or very occasionally) egg sandwich, white bread.
A packet of crisps
A chocolate biscuit (club, trio, united, etc)
Orange squash

When I was a bit older, I started having an apple as well though I didn't always eat it.

Longdistance · 30/03/2017 14:47

Salami sandwich on white bloomer.
Munch Bunch yogurt.
Milky Way.
Squash in my flask.

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 30/03/2017 14:47

Late seventies - bloater or anchovy or chicken shippams paste white bread sandwiches, penguin/club or similar, apple or satsuma. No drink as we were given water and milk in those miniature bottles at break time.
Secondary school and I took a white bread marmite and lettuce sandwich every day and never ate a single one. Binned or hidden in the wardrobe til I was found out.

PinkHeart59156816 · 30/03/2017 14:48

Sandwich
Kitcat or penguin
Crisps
Squash

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 30/03/2017 14:48

80's and 90's:
Tartex sandwich
Handful of raises and peanuts
Penguin biscuit
Apple

TheHiphopopotamus · 30/03/2017 14:48

thepiglet that sounds like too much/not enough food and it's packed with sugar, salt, carbs, heroin and crack Wink

I was at primary in the 80's and we weren't allowed take a packed lunch, as much as I would've liked as school dinners were foul. Lots of boiled to within an inch of their lives vegetables and skins on custard and steamed puddings. Bleurgh!

Packed lunch at senior school was potted meat or cheese on white bread sandwich and a penguin (biscuit, obviously). Maybe a Rocky if my mum felt like mixing it up.

carteblah · 30/03/2017 14:49

Secondary school was a bit of a contradiction. On the one hand we were only allowed water in our bottles and the lunch hall was pretty healthy with a big emphasis on eating well. However, attached to that was a smaller cafeteria that sold every single type of junk food you can imagine- soda, chips (delicious cheesy chips), crisps, brownies, doughnuts, cakes. Every kind of sugar-laden foodstuff. You can guess which one people went to more with their electronically topped-up food cards and it sure as hell wasn't the salad bar.
