To think that the word 'tits' (as in 'breasts') is a little too vulgar ?

I'm quite prepared to be told I'm being prudish or precious on this subject. For years I've been uncomfortable using the word and so I don't. Fair enough. But plenty of people I know say tits without reservation in ordinary conversation, regardless of company and it just grates with me. I'd be surprised if many people outside the medical or lingerie businesses, for example, routinely say breasts. And there's a few less offensive breast pseudonyms such as boobs and bosoms which I'm happier with. Similarly, when people refer to a penis as a cock - I really can't stand that. Of the alternatives, I've yet to make up my mind which is the least worst between willy and knob.

What do you think ? Am I over-thinking this ? BTW, I am male, mid-forties.

I love the word tits. I use it all the time.

I might say boobs if I am trying to be polite. Can't say breasts, unless maybe to the GP!

tanfield90 · 30/03/2017 13:56

Baps is cool, Scoose. A girl I used to work with a few years ago referred to hers as baps (or boobs) and I found that quite amusing. I never heard her say the 't' word.

I'm wondering why a man would want a bunch of women to talk about what they call their tits?

tanfield90 · 30/03/2017 14:00

Cinders. It's not exclusively women on here but I am looking for a female perspective anyway so it's as good a place as any. My workplace is mainly male too so little chance of a fruitful discussion there !

One guy I used to work with called his wife's boobs her floppy funbags! Grin

This is a really odd thing to say, especially on a website full of Mothers with a million threads about breast feeding. Of course people use the word "breasts".

Confused
HolditFinger · 30/03/2017 14:02

Tits doesn't bother me either way although I don't say it myself. (The only time I was a bit Shock was when a breastfeeding friend called it 'titty' and so did her DD when she started talking.) Thought that was a bit grim!

I can't stand 'breasts'. No idea why, it just always sounds awkward. My fave has to be norks.

CalmItKermitt · 30/03/2017 14:02

Dirty pillows.

Cindersfurslippers · 30/03/2017 14:03

And why, exactly, do you want a "female perspective" on names for their mammary glands that are sacks of yellow fat (thanks, Rachel Bloom) to feed human infants with?

NightWanderer · 30/03/2017 14:12

Are these adult conversations? Do you refer to a toddler's penis as a cock?

I remember my brother and mum said the baby has shit himself. I just thought it was so Confused

NotJanine · 30/03/2017 14:14

Different terms conjure up different images for me -

Tits = large, in your face eg glamour model
Boobs = quite large but minding their own business
Bosom /bosoms = mature lady. Possibly singular as they can appear as one
Breasts = smaller. Also when in a medical or feeding situation

pipsqueak25 · 30/03/2017 14:17

always used medical words with dc from young age [am ex nurse] because i couldn't be doing with all the daft alternatives, front bottom ?winkle ? wtf

NotJanine · 30/03/2017 14:17

For men

Willy = small boy's penis
Cock = penis ready for sex
Dick = penis of an unpleasant man
Todger = penis with a sense of humour

tanfield90 · 30/03/2017 14:18

Fair point Scarlett. I completely get that and I don't know why I overlooked it in the first place.

Cinders. Because it's a part of the female anatomy and one which is of particular interest to males, for obvious reasons. The men I know certainly wouldn't baulk at using the word 'tits' so I wouldn't discuss such a subject with them but, rightly or wrongly, I do. So, I'm interested to know what women think of their breasts having a commonly-used but vulgar pseudonym. Some might find it unpleasant, some might not be bothered and some women may use the word freely. As I've stated in my first post, I'm not comfortable with 'cock' but I suspect I'm in a minority and I know it won't go away. So I put up with it but I don't say it.

My sister likes "tits" for casual use. I use boobs. We are both very moderate in that department so I'm not sure I'd subscribe to NotJanines theory of scale.

tanfield90 · 30/03/2017 14:21

Incidentally, I'm glad to see I'm not alone with my opinions.

OP posts:
NotJanine · 30/03/2017 14:21

It's just a personal scale. I'm not trying to get it universally accepted Grin

ShowMePotatoSalad · 30/03/2017 14:21

I personally think you're being prudish but it's personal preference so YANBU if that's how you feel.

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/03/2017 14:23

I don't mind tits. It wouldn't offend me. I use boobs generally. Cock is a bit.....porn speak.in my mind. I might refer to someone as a cock, but not a penis.

floraeasy · 30/03/2017 14:23

I'm okay with tits.

Not so keen on funbags though.

MumBod · 30/03/2017 14:23

You can't put your finger on tits, yet you're uncomfortable with cock?

Are you a little confused, OP?

floraeasy · 30/03/2017 14:24

I sometimes use the phrase, "this is really getting on my tits".

Maybe a bit old-fashioned now.....

floraeasy · 30/03/2017 14:24

You can't put your finger on tits

Snigger.... Wink

Dothehokeykokey · 30/03/2017 14:25

Always callled whappers or funbags in our house.

floraeasy · 30/03/2017 14:25

Loved your nuanced list, Janine
