Interested to hear people's views on why they do believe in God or on why you don't believe in God.....

OP posts:
boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:48

Or Poe even. Thy wrote like a parody of a fundie

EastMidsMummy · 30/03/2017 17:52

Eastmid different parts of it are intended to be used for different things. [.....] Christianity is supposed to be a living faith

Who decided that?

Do you think the Iron Age mystics who wrote it intended that?

What makes you think that the parts of it that challenge everything we know about reality, biology or physics are more reliable than the parts you reject? Why would you want to take lessons in morality from a book that thinks the earth was created in six days?

EastMidsMummy · 30/03/2017 17:54

Please don't write off all people of faith as deluded bigots.

I don't think people of faith are bigots (or, at least, no more so than people of no faith.)

dawnviews · 30/03/2017 17:55

Greek mythology that's all i know, and your point?

dawnviews · 30/03/2017 17:56

Have the others answered your question?

MaidenMotherCrone · 30/03/2017 18:00

Majayjay

Satan is a Christian idea. Non Christians don't believe in him and are not at risk of hell fire and eternal damnation ( you have Dante to thank for creating the last bit and pumping the fear level up a few hundred notches)

On a lighter note.... Santa/Satan Smile

MaidenMotherCrone · 30/03/2017 18:02

Odin....Greek mythology?????

I'm offended!

OdinsLoveChild · 30/03/2017 18:21

maidenmothercrone what did I say? I havent posted since page 4 I think Shock

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/03/2017 18:34

Greek mythology that's all i know, and your point?

Is it possible, in your opinion, that the greek, norse, egyptian, babylonian gods are still in the heavens?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/03/2017 18:36

Sorry OdinsLoveChild I took your fathers name in vain Grin

OdinsLoveChild · 30/03/2017 18:47

I'm not offended, he's difficult to forget just Grin

Majayjay · 30/03/2017 18:53

I'm am aware that Muslims "believe" in Jins. Which are Santans.

Satan just means evil, negative. That which can is not good.

HotNatured · 30/03/2017 19:25

Nope. Why? Because I am a very sane, rational, sensible person who doesn't require a crutch to get through life. I cherish every day on this beautiful planet as I know I will cease to exist, just as before I was born, when I eventually die.

Just because some people find it 'comforting' to believe in a sky god doesn't make it true.

Also don't blv in pink unicorns, the tooth fairy or any other made up man made nonsense invented to keep humans in their place.

The sooner religion is a thing of the very distant, past, the better.

MissAdaSmith · 30/03/2017 19:40

I don't. And why would I. I cannot think of one single reason to believe in God in any shape or form. So why would I worship of believe in him (her?).

apart from this, if they were to exist they would be almighty and looking at the state of the world I can only conclude that there cannot be a good God (or he would surely use his almighty powers to get rid of all the suffering) or God is almighty but he is an uncaring arsehole and then I don't care about him. But for me, using reason ansa sound rational, I cannot do not quite understand how people believe.

pollygarterispretty9 · 30/03/2017 19:53

"and I said to the man at the gate of the year, give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown"......................read it King George V read it on the radio

Nakedavenger74 · 30/03/2017 20:31

Okay so we've ascertained from believers that god doesn't intervene in genocide, disasters natural or man made because it's a challenge and because we fucked up the world ourselves.

So what is the point of prayer then?
And what about those who say god is with them and helps them and feels his love?
And those who talk of miracles and diseases cured?

Surely he doesn't intervene then either or is it just the easy things he pokes his nose into?
Is god just looking after a few people then. The ones who have the less difficult problems? None of this makes sense.

WankersHacksandThieves · 30/03/2017 20:34

Yes well, god couldn't possibly intervene in saving people from genocide or curing cancer when he's got to help out with little Sam's spelling test... Hmm

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 20:35

He's the go to god for first world problems. Bad back? Finding it hard to get on with a work colleague? Yahweh is the way to go :)

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 20:36

For bigger problems we need to seek the help of science and our ever evolving sense of humanity.

SuperBeagle · 30/03/2017 20:41

I'd rather take my chances with Satan than with the homicidal, egoistical maniac that is the Christian God.

MaidenMotherCrone · 30/03/2017 20:44

Sorry Odinslovechild that wasn't aimed at you but Majayjay.

saying Odin came from Greek mythology. Seriously Grin

dawnviews · 30/03/2017 20:54

I'd rather take my chances with Satan than with the homicidal, egoistical maniac that is the Christian God
So at least you acknowledge there is a God then.

SuperBeagle · 30/03/2017 20:58

So at least you acknowledge there is a God then.

Nope, speaking in hypotheticals. I'm an atheist and anti-theist.

OdinsLoveChild · 30/03/2017 20:58

MaidenMotherCrone I hadn't read Majayjay's post Shock I can confirm that my Father is in fact Norse its too hot in Greece for him with his beard. Glad I could clear that up for you Grin

JaneEyre70 · 30/03/2017 21:04

I really don't have any strong feelings on the subject. I find it hard to believe in something I can't see; I find it hard to fathom why a God would allow man to be so horribly cruel at times.
I think we get given a path in life, a "destiny" and we're given situations that test us to our limits. To know love, you have to know hate. To feel joy you have to know utter sorrow. I think that is more spiritual than Godlike though.
I've had some horrid things happen in my life, they've not been remotely nice to go through but I've come out the other side and am still here. And I'm a different person from them. I've learned about the sort of parent I won't be from the fuck ups mine made. And are still making. I've learned that losing a child at birth makes the ones I'm blessed to have with me are more precious than I could ever have imagined.
What I do find sad is that we are able to fight wars and kill people over a ghostlike figure that none of us can prove exists or not. It's a funny old world, this place we live on.
