Why you do or don't believe in God?

Interested to hear people's views on why they do believe in God or on why you don't believe in God.....

OP posts:
WankersHacksandThieves · 30/03/2017 16:54

Religions are man made.

So is the notion of god.

DevelopingDetritus · 30/03/2017 16:55

Religion mostly stops people from finding God.

Ontopofthesunset · 30/03/2017 16:56

OK, so religions are man made but God is not. So you don't follow any faith. Is the God you believe in supra-religion? Or is he the Judeo-Christian-Abrahamic God? Or is the God expressed via the various Hindu deities? Or is he Jove with his pantheon of beauties and braves?
And why then does God allow there to be so much fighting between religions on earth? Why does he make it so hard for people to understand what he/it/life is all about?

MooCahnt · 30/03/2017 16:58

What about the 2-3 million Hindus murdered and 200,000 women raped in Bangladesh in 1971. He was probably concentrating on getting someone through a driving test while that was going on.

EastMidsMummy · 30/03/2017 16:58

boolifooli Is God supposed to intervene in every single atrocity, i mean where would he draw the line. What about the 6 million jews murdered by the nazis for instance.

Wow.

I mean, he's a busy guy, right??!

How many Jews murdered by the Nazis would have been a reasonable amount for your God to save?

Majayjay · 30/03/2017 17:00

Of course there's a God.

We wouldn't have the technology we do with out Gods power. We're not animals. We live in houses not trees.

As more and more people are leaving God behind, the more messed up this world is. People are choosing Satan over God.

MortalEnemy · 30/03/2017 17:01

What, like anything over a 5 million person genocide and your busy guy deity is tapping his watch and talking about overtime? Hmm

It is really unfathomable how many hooks it's possible to let an omnipotent, loving deity off.

DevelopingDetritus · 30/03/2017 17:04

God isn't a 'He', it is an 'It'. God, Life Force, Soul are one and the same thing.

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:04

I'm not omnipotent but I would prevent a child being raped if I knew about it. God doesn't. He's not nice.

EastMidsMummy · 30/03/2017 17:05

It contains laws that were written three thousand years ago for a specific group of people in a specific place, poems, personal prayers, oral history that's nearly three thousand years old. The New Testament is different again. Five books reminiscing on the life of Jesus, written fifty to a hundred years later iirc. A bunch of letters from a couple of influential Christians to other groups of early Christians.

And why do you place such moral authority or spiritual guidance in these particular contradictory Bronze and Iron Age texts? I assume you don't believe the bits about keeping slaves or murdering heretics. Why do you believe the rest of it has any divine provenance after atrocities like that??

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:05

As more and more people are leaving God behind, the more messed up this world is. People are choosing Satan over God.

Which is why Isis want to create a caliphate. A society where God is first.

Oops sorry wrong God, my bad.

Majayjay · 30/03/2017 17:06

If bad things didn't happen to people, we wouldn't appreciate Gods greatness. We can't live a hunky dory life all the time. God sets us challenges.

MortalEnemy · 30/03/2017 17:07

Majayjay, are you suggesting that we would be technology-less animals living in trees not houses if it wasn't for the power of God?

This thread is most enlightening.

EastMidsMummy · 30/03/2017 17:07

We're not animals.

Of course we're animals. We share 96% of our DNA with chimpanzees. We are closer to them than mice are to rats.

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:08

We didn't always live in houses. Some still don't.

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:09

We wouldn't have the technology we do with out Gods power. We're not animals. We live in houses not trees.

toffee1000 · 30/03/2017 17:11

Majay so why do some suffer so much more than others??? That kind of reasoning makes God sound like an arse. Sorry but I can't believe in a deity that makes lives so hard for some and piss easy for others with no rhyme or reason behind it.

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:15

I sometimes allow my dc to forget to take his homework. Those sorts of experiences help him grow and to organise himself. However, I have yet to arrange for him to be raped by the local paedophile. That pretty much fucks kids up.

Majayjay · 30/03/2017 17:17

Haha. Such fools. We are not animals. Are dogs opening shops and wearing make up like humans? No. We're not animals.

picklemepopcorn · 30/03/2017 17:21

Eastmid different parts of it are intended to be used for different things. Some bits are challenging and ask us to do things in a way which is not instinctive- turn the other cheek, do not judge etc. Unless you see and listen to people doing bible study, you won't get how the bible is used. Many people in many times have used the bible to justify cruel behaviour. Christianity is supposed to be a living faith, with guidance from the bible, the church, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is entirely right to challenge what you read in the bible according to what you also know from experience. A wise person told me that the New Testament is about love, and all beliefs need to be tested against that. Anyway, I'm not going to convince anyone here, but please bear in mind that you probably don't really know what the beliefs of other people are. It's not about 'sky fairies' and malevolent old men in the sky, or obviously we would all reject it.
I don't write off all non christian people as superficial, immoral, ignorant, consumerist egotists, so please don't write off all people of faith as deluded bigots.

Moocahnt, suppose I can't accept your atheism and ridicule it because 'yorkshire ripper'.

Why do you get to tell me what the bible means? And ridicule me because I do not believe that when you don't believe it either? That's a bit of an odd argument.

I'm not cherry picking, I'm following the understanding I've gained after studying it at Uni, studying it at church, reading scholars' commentaries on it, learning NT Greek to translate bits of it, discussing it with people with a wide range of opinions...

OK though, if you'd prefer to believe I've cherry picked the bits I like out of an instruction manual you don't believe in then that is your prerogative. Don't expect me to take your opinion seriously though, as it is in no way based on reality.

Mine is only based in reality sweetheart. Yours ain't. Yorkshire Ripper. Nice choice. God told him to do it, he was on a Mission from God. I'm from Yorkshire, I know a few people he personally affected with his biblically inspired butchery. So that resonated very nicely, well done you.

DevelopingDetritus · 30/03/2017 17:23

Haha. Such fools.

A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool - William Shakespeare

WankersHacksandThieves · 30/03/2017 17:34

However, I have yet to arrange for him to be raped by the local paedophile

Just send him along to the church, they've condoned and covered up this stuff for centuries.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/03/2017 17:42

@dawnviews Can you answer my question about Odin and Zeus do you believe that those gods exist, im not asking if you believe in them but do you think they exist?

boolifooli · 30/03/2017 17:46

I'm thinking Majay is a po?
