The thing is though that nothing has actually happened yet, and the markets knew this was happening today. The effects will become apparent over the next 2 years and beyond when the results of the negotiations become clear.

jazzy, there was loads of hysteria and over reactions about the millenium bug, but there was also a lot of work done to check and debug systems when necessary to prevent problems. So its a bit like saying that the fire brigade shouldn't have worried about a fire, because it went out when they sprayed it with water.

LouKout · 29/03/2017 17:08

Yes many people worked for months to prevent anything happening with Millenium bug. Including moi

Thats why nothing happened.

shovetheholly · 29/03/2017 17:13

I think many people are about to get a crash course in the difference between "the stock market" and "economics". Can't really blame them - economic coverage in the mainstream TV news has largely been reduced to red down arrows and green up arrows for ages.

The Lega What??? I should have said the Euro. I've read it a few places.

I'm part Greek and in light of what the EU has done there, I'm not exactly enamored with the EU.

Inertia · 29/03/2017 17:55

Despairing.

Jazzy, the reason computer systems didn't go belly up in 2000 was because IT departments in every company had staff working for months to rectify the issue beforehand! Plenty of them spent New Years Eve on call that year!

Twatxit · 29/03/2017 18:03

I can't say it all in one word, but the first and last posts encapsulate all my feelings about leavers..

Yep, the markets have known about this for a while, combined with the consistent message from the government that this was going to happen meant no surprise, 'already built-in' so no market shocks today.

Unlike when our marvellous sovereign currency, the Pound (£), tanked on Brexit results day. The currency markets had not expected it and judged Brexit to be a Very Bad Thing and that as a result £ (and anything valued in £ if you live in the UK) was worth substantially less.

GloriaV · 29/03/2017 18:45

so no market shocks today
London Stock Exchange-Deutsche Boerse deal blocked by EU

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-39430799

I was a bit surprised at this

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 18:49

They were told last month it would probably be blocked Gloria

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 18:51

Gloria The article that you posted actually says this:

LSE warned last month that the deal was unlikely to receive EU approval over concerns that it would limit competition

Almost definitely caused by Brexit but as the markets knew = no shock.

Pleased.

Pleased that its finally been done so that we can get to the end. There is too much uncertainty. I just want it over & done with.

optimistic, my glass is always half full, i'm not mentally wired to be any other way, i try to make the best of a situation and sure as heck not worrying about things i can't change, although i understand others are worried for the future.

2rebecca · 29/03/2017 22:40

I tend to be an optimist too, and think the world order changes so rapidly that in 60-70 years whether or not the UK remained in the EU in 2017 will be seen as irrelevant as the whole trading and political landscape will be completely different again.

Laurendisorder · 29/03/2017 22:42

very very pissedoff!! (out of work in 9 weeks due to Brexit and have to move abroad! Go figure get rid of everyone including UK citizens - well done fuckwits! Last one out turn the lights off!!! That's if you still have any lights left)

Bananagio · 29/03/2017 22:43

The Lega What??? I should have said the Euro. I've read it a few places.

Like where? Most of the anglophone press is shockingly misinformed re Italian politics.

I'm part Greek and in light of what the EU has done there, I'm not exactly enamored with the EU.

Here I agree. And I don't think I have ever come across a Remainer who thinks the EU is anywhere near perfect and most think reform in some shape or form is needed. But influence in effecting change can only come from within the Union. And I have still, 9 months on not read one thing that makes me think life outside the EU would be preferable, however much reform may be needed.
