To think this mum is being a tad PFB about prospective nurseries?

Met a mum at soft play recently who's due to go back to work in a few months and is looking at local nurseries to send her DS to. However she is concerned that there aren't many Ofsted Outstanding nurseries in our area and that her child might be scarred for life (her words, not mine) by going to one that's "only" rated Good.

AIBU to think this is a bit PFB? Outstanding nurseries are great if there's one nearby but in my experience, Good has been great for my kids and they've got no scars of any kind!

Some random new mother wants the best for her child. She doesn't realise Good can be outstanding and outstanding can be crap.

There's nothing wrong with wanting the best for your child. People go about it in different ways. Some don't let their child ever have a drop of sugar, some only dress their DC in designer clothes, others only send their child to an independent school or an outstanding nursery. Almost everyone is precious about something, even if it seems normal to them.

I probably thought if my first born child went to nursery as a baby rather than be cared for by me they would be scarred for life . I hope I didn't actually voice this to some stranger at soft play who went off rolling their eyes because their DC loved going to nursery.

Well I did suggest a couple of the local authority nurseries which are rated Outstanding but she said she wouldn't even consider them on the basis that they'd be "full of council estate kids".

I started off feeling a bit sorry for your friend but actually, having just read that, she actually sounds rather unpleasant.

Lynette, it's not just about the Outstanding thing: it's about her explicit comment about children from the council estates. Not analogous with not allowing exposure to sugar or only using designer clothes: the sugar won't notice if it's being looked down on, but children from a poorer demographic do notice the prejudice against them.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat I sent my child to an outstanding school and they did nothing with her. The teacher was surprised that my daughter could read at the end of year 1. I think the word should be nurturing children to be the best they can be outstanding means Jack. I've paid hundreds into private tutors to get my children to their level. Teachers are to over stretched 30 kids to one teacher. I remember a senior man who worked for Ofsted said the schools are not meeting standards today they are poor. If you were to compare a state outstanding primary to a pre-prep primary school you will see the difference. In the state sector you have to push your child or pay for tutors that's how it is.

I looked at several nurseries for DD, all Good Ofsteds except one which was Outstanding. Guess which was the only one I would have quit work rather than send DD to....

and what about those MNers who live on council estates? whose children she is talking about? should they also cut this poor woman a bit of slack and not hang her out to dry just because she has "different views"?

My point was why didn't the OP challenge her at the time, but instead saw fit to post the exchange here? I was very clear her view is not one I at all share!

HorridHenryrule · 29/03/2017 13:55

Double the way I read her post she only just met her. Do you challenge everyone you meet for the first time?

It is an interesting discussion to have seeing as article 50 has been triggered all of our children will be affected by this.

doubleshotespresso · 29/03/2017 14:00

Horrid Yes I think had I met somebody for the first time and they had made the comment regarding council estates, I would have at least raised that with them as an issue....
And yes I view today as a very sad day- Theresa May absolutely sickens me.
