A school mum has just posted a picture of her newborn asleep in his cot and Im really shocked.

The baby has a pillow and duvet and is tucked in at the top of the cot Sad the mum is a smoker which makes her higher risk for sids regardless so its playing on my mind.

Should I just mind my own buisness or bring it up with her?

Trifle yeah I'd put the odds at:

Unaware and grateful, removes stuff in cot: 10%
Unaware but narked at being given unsolicited advice, nevertheless removes the stuff in cot: 10%
Aware already, but intervention by OP acts as reminder/prompt to rethink and clears cot: 20%
Perfectly well aware of advice but stubbornly ignoring it, pissed off at OP: 60%

I don't think it is incredibly high tbh.
I don't mean high in terms of statistics; I mean in terms of the impact if you are unlucky enough to be that 1:3000 (my stats might be out of date; my DCs are well past that stage). It's like not wearing a seatbelt. The statistical likelihood of getting into a crash is low, but if you do, the decision not to wear a seatbelt could have a catastrophic impact.

The 1:3000 is the risk of what happening?

Trifleorbust · 26/03/2017 16:18

The study by Washington University School of Medicine, published today (24 November 2015) in the Journal of Pediatrics found that 48 infant deaths from 1985-2012 were specifically attributed to cot bumpers. An additional 146 infants were involved in cot bumper incidents in which the babies nearly suffocated, choked or were strangled.

This is according to the Lullaby Trust.

That's 48 infant deaths in 27 years in a country the size of the United States. So just over a death every two years out of a population of several hundred millions (although obviously we don't know how many used cot bumpers).

Now don't get me wrong: on the basis of that advice I have tied my (very pretty) bumper to the outside of my DD's cot and it hangs down from the edge so she can't get anywhere near it. But the odds of a shark attack must be similar to that!

It was how the risk of SIDS was presented to me when mine were that age. Looking on the Lullaby Trust website they now say 0.3 per 1000, so, basically the same thing.

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 26/03/2017 16:37

I can't imagine saying anything, unless she was putting plastic bags in the cot for her to play with or something properly ridiculous. The duvet and pillow that we got DD as a toddler are so thin, if they're anything like that I wouldn't consider them dangerous for a baby, just mildly risky.

BeaderBird · 26/03/2017 16:41

There is someone on my fB who had a 9 week old baby wrapped in two or three blankets, hat, babygro, endless teddies surrounding her, cot bumper and usually one of those teddy soother toys draped partially over her face - frightens me to death. Someone else said something to her and she said 'don't worry I don't leave her like this' but I'm not so sure.

You should say something or perhaps send her some links to look at.

But without meaning to sound grim, the risk is of suffocation not SIDS. SIDS is sudden unexplained death. Suffocation is the cause of death with a quilt/ pillow. And who knows what that risk is?

AppleFlapjack · 26/03/2017 20:48

I am going to try chat with her at school drop offs, I agree its probably a small risk and baby likely to be fine, it is however hugely more likely than in a clear cot, the duvet wasnt tucked in and this tiny newborn head on a pillow at the top of the huge cot about an inch below the quilt (not even tucked under armpits) really frightens me at an age she could wriggle under easily in the night. Im not saying I agree with tummy sleeping/early weaning etc. but I can see the logic some parents choose but this just seems plain stupid.

Trains, there is also the risk of SIDS due to overheating.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 27/03/2017 06:29

Yeah, I'd say something, but wouldn't expect her to listen...

DoubleCarrick · 27/03/2017 06:36

I posted a pic of my newborn in his crib with a bumper, teddies...everything you shouldn't. It wasn't his sleeping place at the time and I'd only put him in there for a brief moment to snap a picture as it had been so nicely 'decorated' for so long in the wait for him to arrive.

Someone messaged me on facebook and said something along the lines of 'love the pic, just to check you know that the recommendations are....due to sids and suffocation risk. I'm sure you know but it's so easy to forget stuff as there's so much to remember with a baby'

The school mum might not be aware and even though I knew, I really appreciated the message

DoubleCarrick · 27/03/2017 06:39

And now he's outgrown his Moses basket his pretty crib has been stripped and is boring Sad why do they sell pretty bumpers with bedding sets that you're not allowed to use?

TheShapeofYou · 28/03/2017 08:39

How did it go yesterday OP?
