Not a fan of the film in general but love Emma Thompsons and rowan Atkinson characters.

Summerisdone · 24/03/2017 22:50

I'm a sucker for a rom-com even though I'm so not into being romantic IRL.
I love this film, as I do most Hugh Grant Rom-Coms

OhNotSoSaintMaria · 24/03/2017 22:55

I dont know which one I love more in that movie, Hugh Grant with his puppy eyes or Billy Mack with his naughtiness.. I cant believe it's been 14 years though!!!

previously1474etc · 24/03/2017 22:56

I like it, I feel deprived if I miss it at Christmas, and have bought it on DVD although now I own a copy I probably won't watch it because I know I can. I don't analyse it, I just enjoy watching it, I suspect that it what it was intended for really.

OrangeStar · 24/03/2017 23:00

Very few films show real life.

At one end you have ridiculous RomComs.

At the other Lena Denant (sp?), Girls.

Very few things really represent women's romantic lives. Its embarrassing really to watch TV and films and see women presented in such stupid ways.

French films, maybe ...

MsVestibule · 24/03/2017 23:01

I only watched this a couple of years ago and, although I love romcoms, I thought this was utter shit. The only thing I liked was the Emma Thompson/Alan Rickman storyline and even the way the 'slutty husband stealer' was portrayed was incredibly contrived - it wasn't his fault, that poor man just couldn't help himself when she fluttered her eyelashes at him Hmm.

Lionking1981 · 24/03/2017 23:04

I absolutely love it. I hate the Keira Knightley story though also the bits with that 'my family' bloke. The rest however is sublime.

I was very moved by the Hugh Grant speech on comic relief - just what I needed to hear at the moment.

SeaWitchly · 24/03/2017 23:05

I agree.
It is one of the crappest films ever made - along with PS I love you and Battlefield Earth. Absolute shit.
Jezebel article is spot on imo.

squoosh · 24/03/2017 23:06

Four words.

Hot.
Semi.
Naked.
Karl.

BikeRunSki · 24/03/2017 23:07

I like that it explores (that may be too big a word) different kinds of love: Billy Mack a d his manager; Laura Linney and her brother; Emma Thompson who will do anything for her children despite her husband; the first schoolboy crush.

I love the Jamie/Aurelia storyline, and his proposal, but appreciate that it is pure "theatre".

It's soppy, saccharine, hear warning, easy viewing.

I like how all the loose ends tie up at the end.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/03/2017 23:08

Ms

I disagree. There is no forgiveness to AR in the film. I think its made pretty celar that ET can see it coming and she doesnt spare him when it does actually happen. The ending, when they meet him at the airport is very telling and very real too. I have been the wife that says "Yes!! Daddy is home!!" while thinking "Yay, the cunt is back and I have to play nice....again" and thats how ET played it.

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 24/03/2017 23:10

Feel the same op it's an absolute load of shite

squoosh · 24/03/2017 23:12

Oh God, that Jezebel article gets linked to on MN nearly as often as the Daily Mail.

tabulahrasa · 24/03/2017 23:13

"There is no forgiveness to AR in the film. I think its made pretty celar that ET can see it coming and she doesnt spare him when it does actually happen."

That.

Yes he plays it as clueless man where he's "handed it on a plate" so to speak, but ET calls him on it, she's very clear that it's him that's to blame.

TedEriksen · 24/03/2017 23:18

I always thought the film didn't let him off the hook - despite his charm (it's Alan Rickman, for heaven's sake) we're supposed to see him as very weak.

Liam Neeson and Laura Linney are excellent, too.

SallyGinnamon · 24/03/2017 23:19

It's the sort of film DD (13) would love. Except it's got the porn film bits in it so it's a no-no!

moreslackthanslick · 24/03/2017 23:22

Oh god no - love the film, hate Emma Thompson although loved Alan Rickman in it and hoped he would bugger off and leave her smug arse.

YABVVVVU

sheldonesque · 25/03/2017 00:57

I like to watch it because I long to be loved by someone. Anyone. Anything.

The clips of people meeting loved ones at the end gives me a bit of hope.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/03/2017 01:06

YANBU. It is cringeworthy shite.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 25/03/2017 01:08

It's a truly crap film. Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman are the only redeeming features in it. Laura Linney isn't bad either.

I really don't get why people love it. On the other hand, I don't mind Notting Hill so what do I know?

AYankinSpanx · 25/03/2017 01:10

Bill Nighy makes anything it worth a look.

Keira Knightley makes me want to throw a brick at the screen.

JaneJeffer · 25/03/2017 01:15

I like Keira Knightley.
The film is fairly shite but some of the actors are brilliant especially Emma Thompson.

Hate the guy going to America and all the women throwing themselves at him, really? If they were throwing themselves at Andrew Lincoln I could maybe believe it!

Julia Roberts is a total pain with her big fake smile so I hate any romcoms she's in.

steff13 · 25/03/2017 01:20

I think you're being unreasonable to wonder why some people like different things than you do. Do people really wonder things like that? It's just different tastes, surely.

sobeyondthehills · 25/03/2017 01:43

I wonder why people like silent hill or saw. Or why they are still watching the walking dead.

I don't start a thread every single time.

I accept I love films probably no one else does, I also accept that I don't like films that everyone else does. I have no clue about why people like Harry Potter.

MrsCobain · 25/03/2017 01:45

I love cheesy shitty badly acted films. I love Christmas films. I love soaps. I love foreign, arthouse films. I love really gory horror. I love 70's 80's b movies. I love most of the actors in the film.

I will watch and love pretty much anything.

My sil made me watch this this Christmas telling me it was the best film ever.

Nope. No no no. So so awful contrived and cringey. Dh is American and was even more confused.

I felt embarrassed for her, maybe you had to watch it at the time.
