YANBU. meaningless shite

LightDrizzle · 24/03/2017 22:13

YANBU, I loathed it, and I liked Four Weddings and Notting Hill, the former more than the latter.

Amanduh · 24/03/2017 22:14

I love it, it's great. It's feel good and funny. It's supposed to be corny. Nobody is forcing you to watch it!

expatinscotland · 24/03/2017 22:15

I'm with you, Iron.

ssd · 24/03/2017 22:17

me too

utter shite

elodie2000 · 24/03/2017 22:17

Love Alan R in everything else but can't stand the rest of them in LA. It's like they've gathered together every awful British actor/actress in existance. I've TRIED to watch it properly a few times and never get past the first few scenes - irritates me for some reason.

CoolCarrie · 24/03/2017 22:17

Pretty woman is total shit as are most films with Julia "husband stealer" Roberts, as are nearly 100% of ms Jolie " I always screw my leading man " movies. Love actually was mainly crap, with the odd gem. The comic relief thing was soo rubbish, what about all the other characters?

GnomeDePlume · 24/03/2017 22:20

Nope, YABU, it is about love in all it's forms. I still watch the film when I can.

Glitterkitten24 · 24/03/2017 22:20

I love it! I start crying at the funeral (I'm opening scenes), and cry sporadically the whole way through! I can't stick Keira Knightley but love all the other storylines and think it's so christmassay....almost no one will watch it with me though so it definitely is a film that polarises people!

Splinters6 · 24/03/2017 22:25

Was it Love Actually that had the famous cut scenes with the headteacher and her wife who is dying? I remember watching them somewhere. (YouTube or directors cut DVD or somewhere) Best bit of the film.

Splinters6 · 24/03/2017 22:26

That should read 'could have been the best bit of the film' but obv it was cut.

sluj · 24/03/2017 22:26

I love it but its not soppy at all...so many of the live stories end badly or not sure. Just like real life.... actually.

The scene where Emma Thompson''s world comes tumbling down but she puts on a brave face and goes off to the school nativity is unparalleled. Brilliant writing and acting.

Also, it's Christmas and if you can't say it at Christmas. .....

blackcherries · 24/03/2017 22:30

I loathe it and actually couldn't believe it was so bad as I was watching it. I honestly find it slightly offensive that it was made. It's not that it's corny, it's that most of the characters are vile and/or the storylines are shit.
e.g. Man wants to move to America. Moves to America with no obstacle.
Rowan Atkinson is the only funny thing in it.

bionicant · 24/03/2017 22:31

love you black cherries, i feel like a social pariah when i mention all this

OP posts:
blackcherries · 24/03/2017 22:32

Me too!

toffee1000 · 24/03/2017 22:33

Surely it's all a matter of personal taste? No one film is going to appeal to everyone.

kerryob · 24/03/2017 22:38

Can't stand it just don't get the fuss over it

BonnyScotland · 24/03/2017 22:38

I love Love Actually x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/03/2017 22:39

Oooh I love LA and I'm really Envy of people who saw it at the proper cinema (I've only seen it on TV)

Yes it is a compulsary Christmas film for me.
love the Andrew Lincoln and cards bit
and Emma Thompson listening to Joni Mitchell in her bedroom

Never tire of it Xmas Grin

Fairylea · 24/03/2017 22:39

It's my favourite film.

I've experienced all the different types of love in the film, and it always makes me cry every single time. BlushGrin

Total guilty pleasure.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 24/03/2017 22:39

If you're watching it expecting cinema verite then I can see why you hate it Grin
There's lots wrong with it but it has Emma, Liam, Alan and Laura being absolutely fabulous.
I detest that Jezebel article. Everyone knows what's wrong with the film but at least Love Actually wasn't fucking crass enough to try to co-opt Natasha Richardson's tragic death to try score 'movie reviewer' points.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/03/2017 22:41

The majority of it is cringe worthy but the Emma Thompson/Alan Rickman storyline is wonderfully played, as is the Billy Mack story.

Why the hell they left in the "going to america to get laid" story in and left the Anne Reid/Frances de la Tour love story on the cutting room floor doesnt make any sense to me.

Patriciathestripper1 · 24/03/2017 22:41

The Tiffany plot was so cringeworthy and unbelievable but the rest was really good.

gillybeanz · 24/03/2017 22:47

Splinter

From about 1:10 I agree it was excellent and shouldn't have been cut.
