I end up putting many of the links on these threads on my reading list because events & these threads tear along at such a frantic pace. It is interesting going back to some of the earlier one with additional weeks' context under our belts.

This fivethirtyeight.com article on 14 possible outcomes of the Trump presidency was published at the two week mark. It looks like we can rule some of the possibilities out already.

Also, this article on 10 ways to tell if your president is a dictator.

I don't think it would hurt to periodically revisit some of these articles. Perhaps future threads could have some resources (including Amy Suskind's blog) at the head, much as the domestic abuse ones do. Always helpful to have a yardstick to evaluate events against.

For the President to pass a new bill that makes Democrats happy is a huge defeat.

Except that Trump isn't really a Republican and has supported single payer health care systems. He is also apparently anti free trade, supports government intervention in business and spending on infrastructure projects.

It is now completely clear (if it wasn't before) that he just talks a load of crap and doesn't know anything about policy. However, there were points during the campaign and transition where people suggested that he represented a new way in politics - conservative values mixed with more left wing economic policy - the new way for blue collar workers who hate 'identity politics'.

(I think UKIP were supposed to be targeting the same demographic, back when it looked like they could double their MPs and be the new force in the north...)

Apologies if this has already been mentioned (you people are so busy, I can't keep up). According to the Sunday Times, Trump didn't just tell Germany that they owed loads to NATO, he tried to invoice them.
www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/world/germany-dismisses-white-houses-intimidating-300bn-bill-for-defence-dl7dk629k
"Donald Trump handed the German chancellor Angela Merkel a bill — thought to be for more than £300bn — for money her country “owed” Nato for defending it when they met last weekend, German government sources have revealed.
The bill — handed over during private talks in Washington — was described as “outrageous” by one German minister.
Taking 2002 as a starting point, his officials calculated the extent to which German defence spending had fallen short of the 2% target each year, added the amount together — and then put interest on top."

PausingFlatly · 26/03/2017 11:27

Pahahah!Grin

If true, that would certainly explain 45's pouting toddler look in the photoshoot afterwards, as I imagine Angela told him in very short words (so he could understand) where he could put his piece of paper. And that he couldn't sit at the grown-ups' table until he'd shown he could eat without throwing his food on the floor...

merrymouse · 26/03/2017 11:31

Can you be intimidating if you do something that makes you look stupid?

Lweji · 26/03/2017 11:33

That's so funny.
Grin

They're certainly learning on the job, because nobody had done it before.

Who knew healthcare was so complicated?

Also, about the last non-vote:
""We learned about loyalty; we learned a lot about the vote-getting process," he said."

Well done.

PausingFlatly · 26/03/2017 11:33

Oh I think so, if you have any power over people.

It can be pretty frightening when your very, very stupid boss announces their latest bright idea at work, for instance.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 26/03/2017 11:35

That NATO/Merkel thing would be funny if it wasn't so Shock

7Days · 26/03/2017 11:39
Shock What sort of dick move is rhat. Why?

This kind of dick move?

In certain circles, invoicing is apparently a real power play...

I would love to have seen her reaction.

Lweji · 26/03/2017 11:45

Of course Trump is setting himself up for trouble.
Imagine if all of those he owes money to decided to invoice him.
Sure, he had bankruptcies, but he's so wealthy now that he could pay, I'm sure.

I'd start an invoicing campaign.

cozietoesie · 26/03/2017 11:52

Oh an invoicing campaign would be just grand. Grin

Roussette · 26/03/2017 11:53

I would've loved to have seen Merkel's reaction too!

It is totally laughable. He is such a clown. He needs to get his head round the fact you can't run a country like you do a business (not that he did that well either. 3,500 lawsuits filed against him up until a year ago - more since - unprecedented for a POTUS)

I just hope some of his supporters wake up and smell the coffee. Some never will but there most be those who are thinking WTAF....

egosumquisum1 · 26/03/2017 11:57

I'm surprised local Florida businesses aren't invoicing him for loss of trade when he relaxes every weekend down there.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 26/03/2017 12:00

They 'could'. Grin Most anyone could in fact - for most anything. It would be very good for Press pictures. Smile

cozietoesie · 26/03/2017 12:05

In fact - can you still write a cheque (or invoice presumably) on almost anything? I have this image of a cow with an invoice written on its side being led up to the White House. Wink

But she's also been quoted to say don't take it as fact. So it's still quite up in the air. Helpful, eh? Hmm

Didn't he say that everyone would have healthcare?
I'd send my hospital invoices to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Farage:

"Europe 'has no way of protecting itself against terrorists coming in', adds MEP"

That must be why in my national news there were recent reports of extradition of a terrorist recruiter.
And the occasional reports of wannabe terrorists arrested and plans foiled.

No, no way whatsoever.
