Ginger, yes there are a slice of Americans who believe that. Most of them are the wealthy, although there are actually some poor who are led to believe they will one day join the ranks of the wealthy and so believe as they do. Simple brainwashing.

Biglybadgers- lol yes I like to think many of us are, although the stereotypical selfish, loud, arrogant, ignorant and mannerless "ugly Americans" do exist and give the rest of us "normal" people a bad name. :( Case in point- years ago one of my best girl friends and I went to Rio de Janerio. We had an amazing time, the Brazilians were so friendly, the food and music and nightlife was so much fun. We specifically chose Rio because we wanted to pick a location where there would not be many American tourists (like Cancun etc). (And reminder...we are American lol.) Anyway, one day we're relaxing on the beach and we see a group of guys being loud and obnoxious- we look at each other and said "Oh God, I bet they're American!" Yep we were right. Because they moved close to us and I guess they assumed we were Brazilian and were saying things about us, in front of us. So we answered them in English and they were taken aback, but not embarrassed as they should have been. Asked us to go out clubbing with them later and we were like no thanks f*ckers.

Pres weighing asking Paul Ryan to resign as Speaker.

Again - no clue as to whether authentic or not. But can't say this is a surprise, either way.

GingerIvy · 25/03/2017 16:21

Who's going to want to be Speaker? It's like being the next wife of Henry the VIII. Hmm

cozietoesie · 25/03/2017 16:37

Ignore them, Ginger. Smile

GingerIvy · 25/03/2017 16:43

cozie the Rogue staff thing? Oh I don't put a huge amount of stock into it. It's all fairly predictable. Many of the media have been discussing whether or not Trump was going to get rid of Paul Ryan, so it's hardly anything new. But it's something I'm waiting to see... will he dump Ryan or not? And if so, who will replace? Who would want to?

AcrossthePond55 · 25/03/2017 16:47

The American Dream. It was real for many Americans at one time. Each generation of Americans had it a little bit better than their parents did. Not that they became rich, just that their standard of living was a bit better. Certainly in the prosperity of the post-WWII era it was true. But it's not true anymore. Certainly my children don't have it as good as DH and I did at their ages inasmuch as they can't afford to buy a home and the jobs they have don't have good pensions attached. Thanks, Mr Reagan!

I think the difference between the American class system and the British class system (as I understand it) is interesting. And remember that the US class system was born out of protest against the UK class system. But both are pretty much still dependent on keeping people where they are since you can't have an 'upper' without a 'lower', but at least the UK system appears to be honest about it! I do think that the US system is easier to break through as it's basically money based as opposed to 'birth' or status related, but as time passes I think the UK system is beginning to shift more and more that way.

OK, pontification over.

We're listening to Lindsey Graham's (R-SC) town hall. I don't think we'll be able to last it out. Not answering questions asked. Criticizing Dems for not considering Gorsuch because 'Trump is president and he has the right to name SC judges and the Dems should consider anyone he nominates" conveniently forgetting that the GOP members refused to consider Obama's nominee last year!

I love that the questions are all critical.

This is a stunning look at Trump's disregard for the consequences of stripping health care from millions of people.

Trumps attitude towards healthcare is the same as it would be if he wanted to buy out a business: "You won't sell for what I want to pay? Then I'm going to do my damnedest to undercut and bankrupt you, then I'll be back to buy you out even cheaper". That might work in 'the art of the deal' but it won't work when dealing with the lives and health of millions of Americans.

If his actions going forward show that he is trying to underfund or damage the ACA, even his fanbase will be screaming for his blood. Because if the ACA fails, it will take down many people not covered by it as we're all insured by the same companies. If those companies begin to fail, those companies will jack up premiums and cut benefits for the 'privately insured' to make up their shortfall. It's a lose/lose situation. But Trump doesn't care who loses, as long as he 'wins'.

Dumdedumdedum · 25/03/2017 16:57

I'm just stuck here with the same question going round and round in my mind - did IQ45 (like that, pinched from a pp!) genuinely believe that he could say "I'm President now" and everything would magically go his way? Is he really that stupid? And also, how long are he and his family going to get away with their abusive waste of tax payers' money with the security details and visits to golf courses? I really hope he lands up behind bars.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2017 17:09

I think he may be the first modern president to throw his weight behind a big Pledge Bill - to his own party - and not get their support. Mind you, other presidents did some, even considerable, lengthy work on it. They didn't 'lose'.

He did.

originalbiglymavis · 25/03/2017 17:12

In waiting for him to resign yelling 'scroooo yooo alllll, I'll show ya! Milena pack our bags!' and flouncing off. I hope anyway.

lionheart · 25/03/2017 17:19

I think another strand of that narrative is:

I know I've worked hard and so did my parents and still I haven't fulfilled that American dream. Someone must be to blame, someone must have taken what we have earnt, someone else is responsible.

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 17:26

but at least the UK system appears to be honest about it!

That made me laugh across. I do agree things are shifting (on both sides i think), but you just have to look at how popular the hereditary monarchy remains here to see how ingrained the ideology underpinning our class system is in the UK.

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 17:30

I imagine the MN inspired tweets: Aibu think the white house has just got really bitchy recently?

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 17:40

I'm posting this because i think it is relevant and worth us noting on here. I don't think it is a cause for panic yet as hopefully when it gets to an election they will go the way of Gert Wilders.

De-lurking to ask, do you think Pres Trump, will be impeached or resign? Or will the US be stuck with him until the next elections?

It is scary how much he seems to have done, yet he remains POTUS.
