Goodness, Ginger. Is the President promoting a commercial entity? Wink

Lweji · 25/03/2017 14:47

The polls suggest a clear loss by Le Pen on the second round.
And she's been the subject of EU fraud investigations.
But, you never know.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2017 14:51

It's only necessary, in my experience, to suggest to the French that they're blindly following the Americans on this one - and Le Pen loses. (La France etc etc.)

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:52

Bigly Badgers. yep you hit the nail on the head when you wrote this:

The idea that anyone can be anything, can get rich, if they pull their socks up and work hard. Also the focus on individual responsibility and idealisation of the working man. This creates the narrative that if someone is poor than this is solely their fault, because they have not worked hard enough. Also that conversely if you are rich this is because you have worked hard and that you therefore deserve your money, why would you want to give it to someone who so clearly doesn't?

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 14:53

The view with LePen seems to be that she might win the first round because the centre and liberal votes are pretty split across a number of different parties. However in the second round she is likely to lose as there will not be the split across the rest of the vote. I am not sure how her trip to Russia has gone down with the French to be honest and whether it has helped or harmed her cause. There currently seems to be scandal across all the major players, so could be an interesting one.

I got a huge, bigly laugh out of those 'Oh, please, thank us' ads being run during the BBall playoffs. I found it particularly amusing in light of the fact that the playoffs are known in the US as 'March Madness'.

BTW, my laptop autocorrected my mistyped 'bgly' into 'bigly'. So, it's apparently a real word now Grin.

I do remind myself in the midst of the amusement that this was just the beginning. We've 'won' the first skirmish, but there's still a war to be fought. Scrotus may be done with this particular 'toy', but he already has his eye on a brand new toy; tax reform. And since his 'plan' would benefit him and his cronies in a YUGE way, he's not going to abandon it quite as easily as DonTcare. THIS is his real agenda; to put legislation in place that will benefit him and the 1% for as many years as possible. And he's going to sell it to his fanbase using his own particular brand of 'supply-side/trickle down economics'. We all know how well that worked for the American People under Reagan.

Healthcare was a sop, something to show his fanbase "See, I'm working for YOU" so that when they get fucked tax-wise, they all line up for a kiss and a cigarette.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:56

Biglybadgers, the things is though is that many Americans DO believe in social safety nets and many of us admire socialized medicine (like myself) and would love to have some kind of version of that here (although it is a bit trickier here given the large population etc). Obamacare was passed as a compromise, it was the only thing any Republicans would consider since the profit motive was still there and big pharma still makes out well.

@realDonaldTrump To be clear: Trump's plan at this point is to try to slowly degrade health care then blame the ACA.

I don't know, Across. I think he's rather lost the markets now - and when he blames the likely forthcoming 'correction' on the Democrats, that won't help. It will expose, truly expose, his lack of understanding of money.

I suspect that representatives will shortly be becoming rather more amenable to the cries of their constituents.

Thanks TrueBlue it is nice to hit nails occasionallyGrin

It is interesting because it is a different originating ideology from (i suppose in fact a reaction against) the British class system, though it often ends up with a similar mindset. The class system is rooted in the idea of a hierarchical chain that appoints a fixed place for everyone. Effectively everyone is born rich or poor and that is their lot. There is little room for manoeuvre in this and the godly thing is to accept your place and get on with it. Of course your place in this hierarchy also indicates your worth, so those that are born into aristocracy are clearly just naturally closer to God then those who are born poor (though you do get the 'deserving poor' who try their best to overcome the terrible disability of being born to the wrong parents through being extra pure and virtuous).

As with the American Dream this creates the idea that the poor are worthy of contempt and should be despised. It just has the added bonus of extra derision for anyone who dares to step out of the bounds of their appointed place. 'Know your place!' is the mantra of the British aristocracy.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 15:10

Lweji, I never knew about LePen's EU fraud allegations?

Cozie- Lol yea wouldn't doubt it.

Bigly thank you for the explanation!

GingerIvy · 25/03/2017 15:11

Yes, with the American Dream, the whole "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" kind of implies that if you don't (or aren't able to for whatever reason), then you are a lazy shirker and don't deserve help.

It's a very common thought process among many I know.

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 15:11

Biglybadgers, the things is though is that many Americans DO believe in social safety nets

That's because a lot of Americans are actually very nice people I understand Grin

Bigly I hate class-ism, in any form. I am a very spiritual person- I believe in reincarnation and that we all have lived many different lives as different genders, races, nationalities etc. When you look at it from a spiritual sense, in that we are all the same light beings who are choosing to have different human experiences, it really makes one realize how silly things like class-ism and racism and sexism are.
