That Slate article is a good read, saffron, and it led me to this one, which I hope no one else has posted and I missed it.
Slate: Not the President's Fault, but Exactly What he Wanted

This is good on what might happen to ACA now

Will Obamacare Really Explode?
Health-care expert Larry Levitt says it’s the Republicans who own Obamacare now—and here’s what they can do with it.

A quote from a pretty reputable piece.

'When he arrived in Washington, many wondered whether Donald Trump could play this game. Just two months into his presidency, the answer is glaringly obvious: he cannot.'

Dumdedumdedum · 25/03/2017 13:38

The only thing about this is that #45 was elected on the basis that he was going to drain the swamp. So his irrefutable come-back on this and any other failures he might face is that it's the fault of the swamp and until everything changes in Washington, his big, fantastic plans are going to be blocked by the swamp. Which he can't drain because they won't let him. Nasty people.
If that makes sense?

originalbiglymavis · 25/03/2017 13:40

Isn't IQ45 nicely filling the swamp with his own little bottom feeders?

I think you are right dum and he will try that line. The thing with the Trumpcare vote though was that a lot of the Republicans who stood against it only did so because their supporters suddenly realised how much it was going to screw them over and shouted a lot. This didn't happen just because a lot of liberals got upset, but because a lot of republicans got upset. While there are always going to be die hard trumpets who will follow him whatever a fair few are no longer going to swallow the swamp story quite as whole heartedly as they did before.

MrsT2007 · 25/03/2017 13:54

Like the list of people to follow. Have followed some,

Interesting following references to this Jester chap. Who appears to be a celebrity uber hacker and therefore in possession of interesting info. Will keep an eye towards him too

cozietoesie · 25/03/2017 14:00

People should always remember that he was voted for by a minority of Americans. No need to feel lonely on this one.

Oops Grin

Cocky conservative PACs accidentally ran their “We beat Obamacare” ads tonight

cozietoesie · 25/03/2017 14:08

That's very odd.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:18

I'll add on to what Cavemum said about the GOP being opposed to socialized medicine...
That's part of it, but the thing one has to realize about the GOP is that they do not believe in social safety nets, PERIOD. They are against the government helping people, full stop. And they seem to have a disdain for the truly needy- those living in poverty, or struggling with addiction, the disabled, etc. They believe that corporations are people and that the very rich should not have to share their wealth (in the form of taxes). The GOP is truly a self-serving and heartless party.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:20

Biglybadgers bahahahahahahahahaha! STUPID pricks!

Deejoda · 25/03/2017 14:23

Only the GOPGrin....cocky eejits!

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:25

Biglybadgers, what you said above about the reason Republicans bailed on repeal is true, but only half true. The really fcking scary thing is, a bunch of those Repubs that bailed (speaking about the Freedom Caucus ones) did so because they felt that Trumpcare was "Obamacare Lite", "Obamacare 2.0" (their words not mine)...IOW, they felt it wasn't conservative enough*, that Trumpcare was way too generous. Chilling.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:27

Exactly, what cozie said... please remember only about 19% of Americans voted for President Loser.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:32

originalbigly- exactly right...Trump never wanted to "drain the swamp." He may not be the most intelligent, but he does have an innate sense when it comes to marketing himself...he seems to know what people want to hear, and says it. Or as he did on the campaign trail, he would test different ideas at his rallies, if he got a good response he would continue to say it over and over. The man has no real ideology, except to pad his wallet. And yes he desperately wants to be admired

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 14:32

trueblue surely this ideology of the GOP is one that is routed in the very idea of the American Dream. The idea that anyone can be anything, can get rich, if they pull their socks up and work hard. Also the focus on individual responsibility and idealisation of the working man. This creates the narrative that if someone is poor than this is solely their fault, because they have not worked hard enough. Also that conversely if you are rich this is because you have worked hard and that you therefore deserve your money, why would you want to give it to someone who so clearly doesn't?

Add to this a dose of puritanism that suggests that everything is dictated by a god who has a plan and hands out just desserts. Suddenly not only are the poor workshy and lazy, but they are also quite possibly being punished for some unknown sin.

These ultra right wing Republicans simple despise the poor and the sick. They cannot even begin to fathom why anyone would want to help them. In fact they view helping the poor in any concerted fashion as going against god and everything America stands for.

Floisme · 25/03/2017 14:38

Just popping up to say mwahahaha! Grin

I know I know .... he can't deal with humiliation and someone will pay for this, but that makes it all the more important to enjoy the moment.

Did anyone hear the WH allegedly state that they 'had names and knew who was on their side'?

I suspect that thoughts - in the House, at least - will increasingly be turning to the midterms, though. They are not going to be a 'shoo-in' as people might normally expect.

TrueBlueDem · 25/03/2017 14:44

I know this is a Trump thread but I am very interested in the upcoming French election, because I am wondering what kind of effect Trump will have on it, with LePen and all. I know LePen has been around a long time, but I wonder now that everyone has seen what a disaster Trump is if those who would have voted for her would be less inclined to now. I do understand though that she is quite different from Trump (intelligent and graceful) although she shares the same hateful anti-immigrant and ethnocentric beliefs. I read that one of her opponents Macron did amazingly well against her in Monday's debates. (Btw, OT but she recently visited Putin in Russia and I don't think it was the first time).
So what do you think, esp those of you in Europe? Does the Front National in France have a good chance or will France prevail?

Lweji · 25/03/2017 14:45

It's good that they ran the ads. Maybe then people will remember who was trying to screw them.

Having said that, some may well believe it was replaced. That would be an interesting poll.
Maybe GOP will start calling it Trumpcare and everyone will be happy. Grin
