Fair enough!

I'm not sure what the implications of this are but it can't be good:

merrymouse you mean experience of politics and not just the business world isn't bad thing but actually useful? Wink

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 25/03/2017 08:27

Glenn Thrush‏ @GlennThrush
Trump, Bannon and Marc Short wanted to force a public vote to create a GOP enemies list of 'no' voters. Ryan said no.

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 08:28

The joy of the healthcare bill is that however much they water it down the democrats will now never vote for it. The right wing elements of the GOP will also never vote for anything that is watered down and if they make it so the hard right will vote for it the more moderate gop will reject it. There issue is that the GOP is so completely split now between the hard right and the moderates they will never manage to agree on this bill. I have a suspicion they might have the same issue with tax Grin

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 25/03/2017 08:35

The Atlantic article up there somewhere traces the split back to when ACA was first introduced. This is an excerpt:

"We followed the most radical voices in the party and the movement, and they led us to abject and irreversible defeat.

There were leaders who knew better, who would have liked to deal. But they were trapped. Conservative talkers on Fox and talk radio had whipped the Republican voting base into such a frenzy that deal-making was rendered impossible. How do you negotiate with somebody who wants to murder your grandmother? Or—more exactly—with somebody whom your voters have been persuaded to believe wants to murder their grandmother?

I’ve been on a soapbox for months now about the harm that our overheated talk is doing to us. Yes it mobilizes supporters—but by mobilizing them with hysterical accusations and pseudo-information, overheated talk has made it impossible for representatives to represent and elected leaders to lead. The real leaders are on TV and radio, and they have very different imperatives from people in government. Talk radio thrives on confrontation and recrimination. When Rush Limbaugh said that he wanted President Obama to fail, he was intelligently explaining his own interests. What he omitted to say—but what is equally true—is that he also wants Republicans to fail. If Republicans succeed—if they govern successfully in office and negotiate attractive compromises out of office—Rush’s listeners get less angry. And if they are less angry, they listen to the radio less, and hear fewer ads for Sleepnumber beds."

The Democrats will only vote for improvements to the bill, not to make it worse in any way.

Why do they? Are GOP so stupid? We know Trump is.

He perhaps got encouraged that some Democrats voted in favour of some of his appointees. It's not the same, dear.

merrymouse · 25/03/2017 08:45

Will Americans really allow him to do nothing and blame Democrats?

Re my previous post, Silly question - most Americans didn't vote for Trump.

I should have asked will Republicans/Trump supporters allow Trump to ignore healthcare?

Strategically Apple can have a few duff years but benefit from Samsung's problems. However in an alternative universe where Apple are in charge of all phones, they are also responsible for the exploding ones.

It's as though Trump sees the democrats and Obama as a competitive government and president who are still in power.

Dumdedumdedum · 25/03/2017 08:49

Just popping in to say that I think saffronwblue is absolutely on the money (see what I did?) with this: "He has never understood the concept of service. He thinks being President is about rallies, attention and his family milking it for all they can."
And now adding - seriously, the Speaker of the HOR isn't laughed out of the country when he says: "Doing big things is hard"? WTAF?

BiglyBadgers · 25/03/2017 09:01

As someone said up thread being in opposition is easy for someone like Trump. All you have to do is say how terrible the person in power is. Trump was good at this. He was good at ranting about how terrible everyone else was, he was good at nonspecific promises, he was good as campaigning. But he needs someone else to be against to do this. The problem with coming to power through rhetorics of blame and hate is that you have to have someone to blame or hate. It you don't you are left exposed as the one trick pony you are.

Lweji · 25/03/2017 09:02

I have a suspicion they might have the same issue with tax

You're not alone. :)

The Democrats only have to say: "we're NOT in government and don't have a majority."

GOP it's in your hands now. 100%

Unfortunately, it goes like this.
Donald "Smart" Trump

merrymouse · 25/03/2017 09:35

Also bigly, he clearly knows as much about politics as he did about Trump University or Trump stakes.

He can sell the Trump brand, but he has little interest in the product it is attached to. Even then the Trump name has limited appeal. It isn't attached to a product like Ford or Google or Apple and his 'brand values' and image obviously repel many.

Many Trump branded businesses die quickly or never even open (hotels in Rio and Baku). But Trump is paid for his name, not his wider business building ability.

originalbiglymavis · 25/03/2017 09:38

I think his supporters will start to realise that he is just a bag of hot air.

SanFranBear · 25/03/2017 10:09

That is so Sad, Cavemum.. sounds like a really desperate situation.

UnGoogleable · 25/03/2017 10:11

Can someone explain to me in really simple terms why theGOP were so against the ACA and wanted to repeal it in the first place?

Why does Trump call it a disaster?

I'm convinced that the fact that it is known as 'Obamacare' was a huge part of the reason why Trump hated it so much. He couldn't bear to have something remain with Obamas name on it. I honestly do believe he is that pathetic that he would take against it just for that.

But why did the rest of the GOP originally oppose it? And why does Trump says it's a 'disaster'?

egosumquisum1 · 25/03/2017 10:14

If you're in power, if you control the White House, Senate and Congress and you can't get a bill through, isn't that a problem?

Bigly Things are bigly Hard

CaveMum · 25/03/2017 10:32

As a rule the GOP are opposed to "socialised medicine" full stop. Look at all the vitriol and false allegations they threw at the NHS when Obamacare was being debated.

There were people saying that Brits were dying left right and centre because of how ineffective the NHS is. I even saw one highly amusing comment that Stephen Hawking would have been left to die under the NHS (they assumed that because his voice machine had an American accent he must have been treated in the US).

saffronwblue · 25/03/2017 10:54

Nobody knew how hard and complex being in government is.

Now...back to those Russia links. Really hope the heat is kept on here.

Also hope Hillary has had a moment to savour the healthcare debacle.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2017 11:06

Guess who - in their eyes - runs this 'deep state', Pain?

Not sure if anyone has posted this article. www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2017/03/the_mainstream_media_finally_figured_out_how_to_cover_trump_s_lies.html

PausingFlatly · 25/03/2017 11:45

BTW this is exACTly how the narc in my life behaves.

Their overall behaviour is highly predictable - the blaming others, making wild excuses, and moving on.

But their detailed behaviour is highly UNpredictable - the excuse will be so creative and implausible that you're left trying to catch your breath, and it twists your mind into pretzels if you try to make sense of it.

And that's the point: the excuse is the dead cat.

This is a bit disappointing. The Washington post clearly has lower standards than MN. It's basically a parking thread about Ivanka Trump with NO DIAGRAMS!!!
