To not want to spend £67 on a Beauty & the Beast glass ornament?

Dd3 is obsessed with the new Beauty and the Beast film. She spends all of her time listening to the soundtrack. Now she has seen this glass ornament thing - it is £67. Although it's her birthday in 2 weeks, I had already bought her presents. Is it me or does this film merchandise get more and more expensive with every film? Now most of it is outstripping the cost of the Frozen dresses. You can get a set of dolls for £500, no less!!

Lottie where did you get the handmade doll?
My adverts are full of Beauty & the Beast now and shiny, crystal tat. Thanks for that Grin

PoorYorick · 23/03/2017 12:50

I think they're scary because they DO look like Emma Watson, but with so much recession in the hairline you could project the film itself on the forehead. And it's too detailed and realistic a face for smooth plastic; sometimes things are highly stylised for a reason.

lottieandmia · 23/03/2017 12:51

Oh I think that's a bit mean - Emma Watson is beautiful imo.

That's fugly.

"Children remember when parents fob them off with a cheap imitations, and they value themselves less because of it."

What a lot of twaddle!

My DD didn't get a Mr Frosty slush puppy maker when she was a child. Although she did ask santa for one for at least three years. I didn't want her eating copious amounts of ice and I certainly wasn't paying good money for it .
She has managed to grow into a lovely, intelligent, happy , sociable young woman !
Absolute madness to spend £67 pounds on this tat. It will do nothing except collect dust or get broken. Of course children want "stuff" from the film ( that's the whole money spinning idea) but as others have said there is lots of merchandise out there that can be played with at an affordable/ disposable price.

lottieandmia · 23/03/2017 12:52

Sorry Gwen - mine too!

Yes good point - real people's faces just don't project well onto barbie sized dolls.

Oh she absolutely is stunning, but that doesn't mean smooth crap Taiwanese plastic is the best medium for a detailed, fairly realistic face. Especially with nylon 80s hair and an IMAX forehead.

RJnomore1 · 23/03/2017 12:52

Ohhh I'm torn - I'm never comfortable with "I think she will love" myself if they've asked for something else specific. It feels a bit like "I know better than you what you want" or "it matters more what I think"

Then again it's your girl and you know her, she might be so thrilled she forgets all about the rose.

My two are a bit older now but they were buggers for not knowing what they wanted which is even harder 😕

lottieandmia · 23/03/2017 12:53

Lol - hahaha yes I see what you mean.

I got the doll from a company in Canada called 'Bamboletta' so I'll be stung for taxes as well.

Get her the Tesco one. She's 7 - not getting the expensive and very breakable one is not going to hurt her self-esteem.

She'd probably rather have one she can actually play with.

lottieandmia · 23/03/2017 12:55

I know RJ - but to be fair she only started asking for this glass rose yesterday and I bought her birthday present weeks ago.

I've had a look at the doll website - I think she'll love having her Roblox character doll. If you can afford it, I'd get her the jewellery box from Tesco and explain the other one is for adults only.

RJnomore1 · 23/03/2017 13:06

Ahh well it might be a complete flash in the pan then?

KitKats28 · 23/03/2017 13:14

I know that the PP was joking about making one, but actually she might really enjoy it. Empty pop bottle with the top bit cut off, fake rose from the pound shop, gold painted cardboard base. Not as a substitute for the real thing, but just a fun bit of craft. You can even pull some petals off to put in the bottom to make it look like they are falling.

Don't for god's sake show your daughter the Primark stuff. Most of it has been snapped up by greedy arseholes and put on EBay for massive profit 🙄

PoorYorick · 23/03/2017 13:28

I wasn't joking at all about making one. Paper or fabric flowers are easy and fun to make, there are kits dedicated to it. Sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon, making your own enchanted rose. I might do it with my nieces this weekend if I can get the craft stuff. They love Disney princesses.

It occurs to me that a cake pop stand with a dome cover might be a good case for it.

lottieandmia · 23/03/2017 13:40

Oh yes it could be a flash in the pan indeed. She used to love shopkins and has gone off that now. She has sensory integration problems so I tend to get her unbreakable things where possible. She has a very big cuddly toys which she likes to put her arms around a lot. At Christmas she asked for a Nintendo 3ds Xl and she's hardly touched it. If she doesn't like what I bought her I'll send it back - I won't be offended.

No way would I settle for the 9k one, I'm holding out for a diamond encrusted version Wink

PoorYorick · 23/03/2017 14:00

There are some fantastic tutorials online, some of which include using LEDs to make your rose sparkle. They look better than the official one.

GooodMythicalMorning · 23/03/2017 14:25

It is so so delicate. Im too scared to touch it. Everything about it is delicate. The lid is not secure and would slide into rose if knocked.

minipie · 23/03/2017 14:36

Oh my word - I can't believe you are actually considering spending £67 on that! And she's only been mentioning it recently too, she could easily have gone off it in another two weeks.

If she spends all her time listening to the soundtrack then I would suggest something like an MP3 player or funky headphones or maybe a voice recorder if she likes to sing... something she might get a bit more use from long term? Though sounds like you already have good presents sorted anyway.

Pumple · 23/03/2017 14:39

The fact that it's ultra delicate would make it a definite no from me. A 7 year old's belongings should be able to withstand some rough and tumble.

skinoncustard · 31/08/2019 18:41

This , just add your own rose, if you are anywhere near Ikea

What a weird thread to resurrect!

There was me bewildered as to why none of the links worked . . . Confused

elvis86 · 31/08/2019 18:54

This thread is so old, the kid probably asked for 20 B&H for her most recent birthday! Grin
