Apparently I type too loudly

So, I work in an office. Normal open plan.

Apparently one of my colleagues has put in a complaint about me. She says I type too loudly. I do, to be fair, type quickly (90 wpm) and that means I tend to bounce around the keyboard rapidly, and other people have said I type as if I'm in a bad mood (I'm not. I just type at thinking speed).

Nothing else - I don't eat at my desk, I don't really talk much, I don't wear heavy perfume. My boss has been very nice about it and said I'm doing nothing wrong but would it be OK to get me a quieter keyboard, and if that doesn't work, colleague will have to live with it.

AIBU in how I type? Is she? This feels really petty and while I know we don't get on (she's been really ratty and competitive with me recently, which I think it because we work in a target based environment and I've had some very good results lately) I'm a bit thrown that she has actually put in a formal complaint. It seems rather weird too. MN jury?

Not from NI Beryl.

She had a stutter and so she spoke like Robert PESTON. Because I realised they DEALT with it IN THE SAME way. I didn't bring it up, because that would have been rude and insensitive.

But when she COMPLAINED about my typing, my sympathy evaporated.

I have also worked with people who tried to insist on Trappist silence while making phone calls or doing other work. That's not possible in my line of work.

You need to start a new thread not comment on an existing (old) thread @AllyW1984

I used to sit next to someone who typed like this and it drove me crazy, it was the most irritating noise but I'd never have thought to complain about it, I just felt quietly irritated!!

ANewDawn10 · 15/05/2019 10:51

I put in a complaint once about someone I sat next to who hummed. It was this annoying low sound and it was constant. Not surprisingly other people complained and she was moved.

DerrenBrownings · 15/05/2019 14:48

@ANewDawn10 that's so weird. What an odd thing to sit and do. She must be exhausted humming all day.

MIL types like you OP...she did a secretarial course and learned on an old fashioned typewriter. Does my nut in!

TheCatInTheSquare · 15/05/2019 15:00

On the plus side you get a new keyboard. Grin

MagicKingdomDizzy · 15/05/2019 15:03

I worked with a lady who was the fastest typist I have ever seen (more than 90 words p/m).

Her hands glided across the keyboard and she hardly made a sound.

YABU. It is possible to type quietly and quickly, and constant loud typing can be irritating. Try the different keyboard.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/05/2019 15:25

It would drive me insane to listen to you but I would never have made a complaint. Having said that I do think quiet keyboards should be compulsory instead of the cheap noisy ones gave out as standard.
