You don't feed many kids peanuts.
You don't feed many kids gluten.
You don't feed other people's dogs cakes in the park.
Soo... WTF do people walk about trying to give my kid sweets constantly - other kids, parents, strangers even teachers!

Many kids have blood sugar, obesity, tooth enamel and issues with food colouring. Peanuts at least have nutritional value but WTF is the point of forcing sweets on children???

Apologies for ranting but am a bit fed up with it!!

Some people are being hard on the OP. If it is just the occasional sweet, that is one thing, but it can be constant in some communities.

You end up constantly having to say "No" and feel like the bad guy (or even field tantrums and whining, depending on kid's age). It's unfair for people to make parents' lives more difficult like this, just because they want the gratification of giving sweets and feeling generous.

It also means that as a parent you don't get to enjoy the experience of occasionally buying your child some sweet treat that you want them to try, because when they get too many sweets you end up feeling like you can't give them any more.

Erm children are 'encouraged to buy sweets in a tuck shop and bully those who don't eat sweets'. Really?

I don't think strangers should be giving sweets to kids it defeats the purpose of say no to strangers.

I always collect the 'free' sweets my kids have been given in party bags, from airlines, from babysitters, from kind old ladies, from halloween, easter etc in a big jar. I dole them out from time to time but I feel that it's my responsibility to ensure that they have a healthy diet free from additives and unecessary sugar.

I think a sweety a day for a small child is fine. The volumes they are given randomly are not fine.

FFS my daughters' soccer coach began giving out sweets to any child who kicked a goal in a practice session the other day!! I had to say, um, no thank you. Give them a high five and a well-done instead, their bodies don't need that crap.
