To hate the spiel at the Costa drive through?

I know the lad who did it has been told to. He'll have a script no doubt. But my teeth were grinding listening to it.

I couldn't drive away as I was there with a client. Have never been to one before.

Is this common practice?

I absolutely HATE having my shopping commented on at the till.
It's the most cringeworthy thing ever.

A cashier picking out one of my purchases and telling me what they think of it? Why? I'm sure that they don't actually use my shopping list to make their own choices, and it feels unnecessarily personal.

I think (I hope) that our local Waitrose have actually stopped doing this and it's such a relief. I was about to start being rude in reply.

We have a a few drive through Costas here Nottingham and they are fine.

Yes, definitely ask for your drinks to be made extra hot. I learned this trick about a year ago.

I had TV licensing at the door last night (we don't need a licence, they didn't believe us)

I feel like I stood through 10 minutes of drivel before I said sorry, what do you want?
I'm not being rude, but let's just get to the point. Blush slightly embarrassed by how abrupt I was.

He carried on with the drivel about how he would "usually" come in and check but.... no that's fine, come on in, I'm cooking dinner so my husband will escort you to the living room and wherever else you want to go. Are you ok with dogs? No, not really. Ok give me a moment, I'll keep him in the kitchen.

Say to husband with the door slightly open, can you show the TV licensing man all the TVs and that they aren't connected to live TV please?

Husband goes out. Comes back 10 minutes later and says he didn't even want to check, but wouldn't stop talking!

Why the need to talk SO much?

The drive thru Costa across from my house doesn't seem to have any sort of script. Maybe it's just that guy?

juneybean · 22/03/2017 08:09

@gatekeeper oh thank you! I much prefer Costa to Starbucks

CaoNiMartacus · 22/03/2017 08:16

The "did you find everything you were looking for" gets me. Surely if I hadn't, I'd still be wandering around looking for it, not standing at the till with my selections. And if I said "No, actually - I didn't find the badger-fur gilet I was looking for" would the assistant go and find it for me?

lidoshuffle · 22/03/2017 08:38

A department store assistant had the open-ended question technique "How can I help you?" when I was happily mooching . I said "You can't, thank you." and carried on. She got really offended and went on and on loudly to a colleague about how she asked how she could help and that lady said she couldn't blah, blah, blah.

She'd obviously been to the David Brent school of in-house training. Why don't management realise the British hate false bonhomie, up-selling and frantic jauntiness? I'd rather have honest rudeness form a sales person than insincere fawning; at least they're giving me the respect of treating me as a human not a potential sale.

Hear hear, lido

God I am so glad I rarely go to Costa or Starbucks. My local Cafe Nero staff are lovely people no script just friendly chat about having to do the damm shopping, housework etc after having my restoring coffee and pastry 😊 yes they ask if you want a pastry or whatever if you are a new customer but they know me (and most of their customers) by now and just confirm my usual order. Nice personal touches much better than a script. That would drive me mad

I think we should start a no speaking campaign. Could we start with hairdressers please? Grin
