Stuck between two baby names

I'm torn between two names for DS. I originally loved Harris but now I feel its not right for him and leaning towards Alex. Both names fit with his surname. Not sure if Harris is too outdated while Alex is a very popular name.

OP posts:

There is a whole baby names section, you know.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/03/2017 10:26

Alex is so so much nicer.

SaucyJack · 21/03/2017 10:27

Neither are great.

Harris is OK, but Alex is one of those names you hear so many times it loses all point and meaning.

amusedbush · 21/03/2017 10:29

I love Harris. I have no feeling either way about Alex.

Canyouseethis · 21/03/2017 10:36

Harris is slang for arsehole where I am. It's also surname of the nasty Rolf.

HTH

Bloopbleep · 21/03/2017 10:36

Have you had the baby yet? What if he looks more like a tarquin?

EdmundCleverClogs · 21/03/2017 10:42

Harris is a surname to me. I really like Alex. I'd probably go Alexander myself and give the child an opportunity to have whatever shorter version they choose - Xander is an awesome one.

ImFuckingSpartacus, who made you the forum police? Yes it would have been more appropriate in baby names, but it's much nicer than the usual threads on AIBU.

Babybloooos · 21/03/2017 10:44

cantyou

Where do you live? I've never heard of it being slang for a that.

I prefer Harris to Alex, OP.

winewolfhowls · 21/03/2017 10:52

Alex is nice, if you use the longer Alexander then its lovely

hellsbellsmelons · 21/03/2017 10:54

Alexander is nice (bit biased though)
I know a few families with the surname Harris so to me it's a surname.
I agree, have you had the baby?
I called my DD something different for a few days and then realised it just didn't suit her so changed it.

steff13 · 21/03/2017 10:55

Alexander is nice. I wouldn't go with Alex on its own.

steff13 · 21/03/2017 10:56

Oh, hey, Alexander Harris, isn't that Xander's name on Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

DonaldStott · 21/03/2017 10:57

Harris is slang for arsehole

First thing I thought when I read the OP

DonaldStott · 21/03/2017 10:58

Also prefer Alexander to Alex. Can also be shortened to Sandy, which I love as I used to know a Sandy and he was sooooo lovely.

Catdogcat · 21/03/2017 11:00

It is Xanders name in buffy! Well spotted steff

zukiecat · 21/03/2017 11:01

Not sure about Harris

Think I prefer Alex, a friend's husband is an Alexander, called Alex for short, and I don't know if it's the same elsewhere in the U.K., but here in NE Scotland Alex is pronounced Alec

Fair few Alexanders called Sandy too

EJREsMum · 21/03/2017 11:03

Omg, Canyouseethis! Up the Andy Harris is what we say hahaa. Sorry OP Blush

Pencilvester · 21/03/2017 11:04

Harris is slang for arse, so I'd go with Alex.

buttercup54321 · 21/03/2017 11:05

Love Alex. Don't like Harris at all.

witsender · 21/03/2017 11:05

Alexander is nice. Don't see many of them now.

Kittykatmacbill · 21/03/2017 11:05

Alexander is way nicer.

witsender · 21/03/2017 11:06

Could be Alex, Xander, Xandy, Sandy

SquatBetty · 21/03/2017 11:08

I like Alex, really don't like Harris - he may just get called Rolf at school!

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/03/2017 11:09

Alex is much nicer. Although the Harris / arse thing didn't immediately come to my mind, I did find myself nodding "oh yes" as I read the thread, I have heard it used in that way.

Littleballerina · 21/03/2017 11:10

Alex is much nicer. Alexander is nicer still.
Harris to me is a surname.
