Stuck between two baby names

I'm torn between two names for DS. I originally loved Harris but now I feel its not right for him and leaning towards Alex. Both names fit with his surname. Not sure if Harris is too outdated while Alex is a very popular name.

OP posts:
fruitbrewhaha · 21/03/2017 11:12

Alexander
Harris is a surname, and an arse.

NormaSmuff · 21/03/2017 11:13

Harris is more unusual.
Alex is lovely.

LilacSpatula · 21/03/2017 11:13

We had a board in the kitchen and wrote all the names we liked in full (with surname). After looking at them every day we would strike off the ones that we didn't like and we were left with her name. I'm confident in her name as I looked at it every day for months. Perhaps try this?

Honeybee79 · 21/03/2017 11:14

Alexander is so much nicer.

Harris falls within the trend for using surnames as first names and I'm just not a fan of that trend.

NormaSmuff · 21/03/2017 11:14

Would you have Harrison?

blueskyinmarch · 21/03/2017 11:15

Alexander is a surname also. I like both names but i would probably go for Alexander rather than Alex.

Dahlietta · 21/03/2017 11:17

here in NE Scotland Alex is pronounced Alec

I thought Alec was a slightly different name. Every Alec I have known has spelt it that way, not spelt it Alex, but pronounced it Alec.

OhDearToby · 21/03/2017 11:23

How old is the baby? What does he look more like?

Fwiw to me Harris means bum. Alex is much better.

kierenthecommunity · 21/03/2017 11:25

I never knew Harris meant arse. Every days a school day Grin

(What's the unreasonable bit btw? Wink )

FairytalesAreBullshit · 21/03/2017 11:30

I really like Alex too, not sure about the other. Hope this helps.

MollyHuaCha · 21/03/2017 11:39

Alex. Alexander is even better.

Dahlietta

All the Alexanders I have ever known called themselves Alec, but spelled as Alex

I thought it was the norm

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 21/03/2017 12:46

How can a name lose all point and meaning SaucyJack? I don't getcha. Confused

Alex not Harris. Never heard Harris used as a first name is doesn't sound old fashioned not sounds like someone picking a surname to use as a first name to be trendy.

PavlovianLunge · 21/03/2017 12:48

I know a Greek guy called Haris, I like it, but the arse slang could be a problem in the playground. I like Alex, too.

pinkie1982 · 21/03/2017 12:48

My sons name is a surname (and a traditional trade).
I like Harrison, that was in the running for us. Never heard of a Harris.
Which do you prefer? Alex is just normal. I like unusual but not silly names

AYankinSpanx · 21/03/2017 12:50

Alexander out of those two choices, OP!

glueandstick · 21/03/2017 12:57

Harris makes me think 'tweed'

Alexander gets my vote.

Annie592 · 21/03/2017 13:12

I think Harrison is nicer than Harris (have never heard the Harris and bum thing!), though agree both feel a little bit too 'trying to be trendy' to me. We really struggled with a boys name- the one we picked (though didn't use as she was a girl!) was very common but we loved it- so don't let common put you off if you really like it. Alexander and Alex are both really nice names.

hollie11 · 21/03/2017 13:32

I immediately thought Rolf when you said Harris tbh. I wouldn't use it if you are in the UK.....child might get nicknamed Rolf in school.

EssentialHummus · 21/03/2017 13:36

Alex from me.

Catra · 21/03/2017 13:39

I've never heard of Harris as slang for arsehole! It does make me think of a surname though.

A few people have suggested Harrison, but it's so overused at the moment IMO.

I'd go with Alex, but use Xander instead.

SometimesMaybe · 21/03/2017 13:46

Harris is the new "Harry" where we are - naice middle class area of Scotland - there are loads of them. There are 4 in my DC nursery class! Alexander is really popular too but it always has been, whereas the next ten years there will be loads of Harris' then it will drop off.

AntiHop · 21/03/2017 13:50

I love the name Alexander.

Applebite · 21/03/2017 13:51

I love Alexander/alex. If DD had been a boy, that was my choice. DP vetoed it😡

I have never heard of a Harris being an arsehole - but a "Mrs Harris" is a vagina!

1horatio · 21/03/2017 15:09

Alexander is a bit popular.

But still, a really lovely and strong name.

Harris is very "now", isn't it? It may age a bit...

I personally prefer Harry or Henry. Nicer than Alexaner or Harris imo...
