Wtf ambo? Inspo? Sainsbo?

I probably am being unreasonable and particularly old/middle aged but wtf is the deal with ending words with bo and po?

I regularly see posts referring to sainsbo (Sainsbury's) and it took me ages to work out wtf they meant. Same with ambo (ambulance) and inspo (inspiration)

I am a very literal person and it takes me ages to decode these bastardisations of words. Do people actually speak like ''tis in real life or is it an online phenomenon? Is this some yummy mummy language (I only see it in places like mn) or am I just not down wit da yoof?

Sambos and ambo are Aussie words for sandwiches and ambulances, when I question the sambos thing they had no idea about any other meaning for it

Grilledaubergines · 21/03/2017 20:51

profbadbride. Yes it is said innocently but when I heard it the first few times I did a mental 'yikes!'

Grilledaubergines · 21/03/2017 20:53

'Going/gone loco' irks me. I know it's a word with a meaning but I don't think it translates well. There's an advert on television at the moment and they say 'loco' and it irritates me.

Thanks ladies. After reading a thread on brexit, another on refugees, and to top it all a thread on the menopause (Confused) this thread is what the doctor ordered! Crying from laughter!

I HATE all the food words. Toms, sarnies, pots (yuk!), but also I detest chrimbo and mat leave. There are many others. Had never heard of sambo and Ambo before thank goodness.

PingaPenguin · 21/03/2017 21:25

I once heard someone refer to a spreadsheet as a 'spreadie'
Vile.

RJnomore1 · 21/03/2017 21:37

Can some please translate response and Malco into English for me please?

RJnomore1 · 21/03/2017 21:37

Respo!

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2017 22:29

the latest mn lingo

were you using 'lingo' (which has been in common parlance for decades) ironically or not?Confused

ADedicatedFollower · 21/03/2017 22:31

What is respo?

Unihorn · 21/03/2017 22:45

Hubby, hubs, hubster etc. Especially when prefixed with "the". Makes me feel ill.

paxillin · 21/03/2017 22:48

Friend of mine goes to Wimbo in June. Presumably to watch tennbo.

Ohyesiam · 21/03/2017 22:48

For the op who asked, Cray cray is crazy

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 21/03/2017 22:55

Just watched Mutiny and they reached Restoration Island and the only guy living there, an Australian, had a sign up calling it 'Resto' made me laugh out loud (see no abbrevo there ha) after this thread!

dylsmimi · 21/03/2017 23:00

I hate -
Sanpro - only even seen on mn
Nom nom
Hubby
Sorrynotsorry -Angry
Especially if it is #sorrynotsorry
No need for fucking # anywhere than Twitter

SuperBeagle · 21/03/2017 23:00

Ambo is Australian, definitely.

SuperBeagle · 21/03/2017 23:07

Also "ambo" refers to an ambulance driver, not the ambulance itself.

  • Sanga and sambo are used for sandwich.
  • Avo for avocado.
  • Arvo for afternoon (s'arvo for this afternoon)
  • Firey (prn. fiery) for a firefighter
  • Uni for university
  • Rego for registration
  • Servo for petrol station/service station
  • Tradie for tradesman
  • Garbo for garbageman

All used daily.

Mo55chop5 · 21/03/2017 23:12

The "gate" suffix

Watergate was a place so fuck knows why adding the word gate to any crappy scandal somehow legitimises it. I know it's not the same as what was in the OP but it genuinely makes me want to commit cold blooded murder 😳

ZaZathecat · 21/03/2017 23:21

I hadn't seen 'ambo' before, had a think about it and decided it must be slang for 'ambience' (pronounced om-bee-yonce, just to annoy a few more people).

Muddlewitch · 21/03/2017 23:26

I don't understand what respo and malco mean either. Responsibility? Malcolm?

ZaZathecat · 21/03/2017 23:31

Respite and... yeah Malcolm?

DoolallyBinzes · 21/03/2017 23:37

I don't say Sainsbo's but I do say Nando's.

ADedicatedFollower · 21/03/2017 23:39

Isn't there a comedy sketch about Watergate gate?

JoffreyBaratheon · 22/03/2017 00:25

Nom is one I can't cope with.

Also 'Sainsbobs'. Makes me cringe. And yes I'm middle aged, too. But... why such affection for a soulless, overpriced supermarket that is so crass they tried to sell frozen peas/xmas tackiness with a WW1 based ad, one xmas. Their current advert is so bad I have to mute it. But "Sainsbobs". Why the affection? Or is "-burys" too hard to say, now?

SugarLoveHeart · 22/03/2017 00:48

Sambo & Malco (what does that mean?) are insulting? What is sambo, apart from sandwich?

I'm always shortening words... Boyf, rents, fingies (fish fingers), toms, sausies, appara, HB (handbag).

stilllovingmysleep · 22/03/2017 06:28

I detest avo! yuk.
