Wtf ambo? Inspo? Sainsbo?

I probably am being unreasonable and particularly old/middle aged but wtf is the deal with ending words with bo and po?

I regularly see posts referring to sainsbo (Sainsbury's) and it took me ages to work out wtf they meant. Same with ambo (ambulance) and inspo (inspiration)

I am a very literal person and it takes me ages to decode these bastardisations of words. Do people actually speak like ''tis in real life or is it an online phenomenon? Is this some yummy mummy language (I only see it in places like mn) or am I just not down wit da yoof?

What is "respo"? I am clearly don't down with the cool kids.

Fauxgina · 21/03/2017 15:44

I was watching Bargain Hunt today and the guy asked for their "to-to" ... as in total Hmm

AYankinSpanx · 21/03/2017 15:53

It's not the same thing, but I'm just going to chuck 'methinks' in there where it bloody belongs.

Arkengarthdale · 21/03/2017 16:05

I don't say Sainsbo's but I do say Waitro's Grin

HandbagCrazy · 21/03/2017 16:21

Oh I hate all this shortening of words, or corrupting their meaning.

New one for me this week - Apaz (short for apparently). I didn't quite know what to say to that.

I have a particular hatred of nom, fleek, whatevs and obvs. Also the way 'epic' doesn't actually mean the same thing anymore.

I am just into my 30s, I'm sure this isn't supposed to bother me yet but it does

CaoNiMartacus · 21/03/2017 16:27

"Mumma" is annoying too. It makes me think of Medieval mime artists capering around.

I like butties though. It reminds me of my Scouse nanna!

AYankinSpanx · 21/03/2017 16:34

I have a particular hatred of nom

Oh God, yes. Bloody nom.

Sorry, I know this crops up on MN fairly often but I dislike 'luffs' as well. Quite a lot actually.

"Methinks I luffs this sanbo from Sainsbos! Nom! lol'*. shoots self

StayGoldPonyBoy · 21/03/2017 16:38

It took me ages to work out Sanpro was an abbreviation. I thought it was a generic brand my Tesco maybe didn't sell, you know, like asking to borrow 'a tampax' Blush

WhooooAmI24601 · 21/03/2017 16:43

I hate, hate, hate 'lil' for little. It's supposed to show that your 'lil' darling is cute and adorable and yet all it really does is prevent me from wanting to allow you to speak ever again. It's all over Facebook "My 'lil mini-me".

That's another one; Mini-me. Unless you cloned an actual tiny replica of yourself that child you're dragging about in matching dresses is not a Mini-me and will in fact hate you when she's old enough to realise that your ego is so vast that you've convinced yourself that they're somehow an extension of you and not simply a person in their own right.

toomuchtooold · 21/03/2017 16:49

I hate nom but I have a thing about lots of eating words, not just that one. I can't stand "tasty" or "brunch" and especially not "om nom nom." Aaargh my ears my ears.

I do say Sainsbo's though. Sorry. I also say Tesco's which I know drives some people up the wall.

AYankinSpanx · 21/03/2017 16:53

'Oozes' when used in the old standard 'she oozes class.'

That's interesting toomuch, I think I might not like some food words, even though I love anything to do with food! 'Slathering' or 'slathered' (as in with butter or something) is horrible!

Ontopofthesunset · 21/03/2017 17:02

To be fair to sanpro, that is an old industry category term that retailers and manufacturers use, like FMCG or OTC.

toomuchtooold · 21/03/2017 17:02

'Slathering' or 'slathered' (as in with butter or something) is horrible!

Blergh. Yes!
I'll see you a slathered and raise you an unctuous. That's naaaasty.

Beansonapost · 21/03/2017 17:15

YANBU!!!!!!!!!!

I too thought something was wrong with me... Angry it's all annoying!

Bloopbleep · 21/03/2017 17:27

Don't get me started on cray-cray.

OP posts:
scanbran · 21/03/2017 17:29

My neighbour got hit by a runaway bin and is waiting for a "bit of compo" . Apart from that I have never heard of the -bo/-po phenomena. I live in Ireland and have never heard of a sambo. It's the sort of thing I would expect to hear Jimmy Corkhill from Brookie to say Grin

Greyponcho · 21/03/2017 17:32

I hear your cray-cray and raise you a "thingie-o".

Makes my teeth itch

HandbagCrazy · 21/03/2017 19:08

Sanpro is what the whole industry (and marketing/advertising agencies) use to describe it - it's definitely not a MN thing!

I hate 'uni'. No. It's university.

ADedicatedFollower · 21/03/2017 20:14

AYBU?

Deffo!

( Means definitely!)

Flyinggeese · 21/03/2017 20:23

Gingerly, I need to ask, what please is cray cray?

Yes yes to the PPs who mentioned 'nom' and also 'methinks'. Methinks is off topic but god it has to stop

Flyinggeese · 21/03/2017 20:24

Oh I love a 'defo'!

ReturnofSaturn · 21/03/2017 20:29

Im in Australia. They do this with everything. Grin

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/03/2017 20:36

Fauxgina
"In toto" is an an actual phrase from latin meaning as a whole so maybe that was what he was saying?

Flyinggeese · 21/03/2017 20:37

In fact any of these in a Liverpudlian accent is fine! I'm a hypocrite.
