To be sick of all the 'gin' shit everywhere?

Gin hotels, gin tasting events, gin signs and mugs all over the bloody place.

Last year it was Prosecco, year before I think it was Pimms. Oh and I love gin but FFS all this marketing towards middle aged women (like me) gets on my tits.

Yes I probably am being unreasonable but FFS, there's even one of these >>>> Gin now!

i hate Gin

Additionally, flavoring drinks at various steps may in turn make different spirits (gin is vodka that has been flavored with juniper berries during distillation). Mixing different drinks also results in new drinks (for example, wine + brandy = vermouth)

www.foodrepublic.com/2012/08/23/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-gin/

  1. Gin is flavored vodka
The most usual production method for gin is to distill botanicals, such as juniper, coriander, citrus peel, cinnamon, almond or liquorice, with neutral grain alcohol. Making gin is like flavoring vodka, except that botanicals are always natural. A skilled gin distiller knows how to balance the botanical flavors to make a quality product.

I remember the good old days when gin was called "mothers ruin"......or was that Valium?
I'd much rather a malt whisky than gin....which is not very middle aged womanly of me.
I banned myself from drinking prosecco as I get absolutely shit faced on two glasses the bubbles don't agree with me.

BubbleBed · 19/03/2017 21:09

babycham i loved a Pernod and black as a teen. I haven't seen it for years!

BabychamSocialist · 19/03/2017 21:12

HappyHippy45

You've just reminded me how easily doctors gave out valium back in the day! My mum could never sleep and she was on them for about 10 years. They eventually discovered how insanely addictive they are and now she's on something else which is better.

There was a time though when it seemed every woman over about 35 was taking them for something or other!

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 19/03/2017 21:13

"I remember the good old days when gin was called "mothers ruin"

That phrase Predates Valium by a long time. It goes back to the Hogarthian Gin Alley, when the rougher types were used as an abortifacient. If it didn't kill you stone dead, of course. Which it did for many.

megletthesecond · 19/03/2017 21:14

The only time I had gin was FA Cup Final saturday at the pub in 1996. I was very very sick.

JamesDelaneysHat · 19/03/2017 21:15

Wow didn't know that about the phrase 'mother's ruin'!.

Natsku · 19/03/2017 21:16

I used to have Cava parties when I was a teenager. After the pub, we'd go to one friend's house whose parents always have some bottles of Cava lying around, and we'd drink Cava, play Rainbow Six, and talk shit and occasionally fell asleep on the floor. Good times Grin

GreenPeppers · 19/03/2017 21:16

willbur dont ask for the tread to be deleted.
no way that you could have known abut the emoji plus the question you are raising stays.
its gin everywhere. I thought it was a MN things until I started seeing references to it on FB. So again I assumed the person in question was on MN but seeing the number answers, there would be a LOT of people on MN!!
its annoying.
and I have issues with the type of association made between the gin(alcohol) and a lot of (usually very positive) stuff

Corneliusmurphy · 19/03/2017 21:16

I like gin, I like wine, sparkling or otherwise - I have no urge to buy a cushion proclaiming this.
Plus the whole gin mothers ruin thing makes me think of Hogarth - it's not new.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/03/2017 21:19

Valium was Mothers Little Helper wasnt it?

My mum has often said that she was offered Valium many times by the doctor and was one of only a couple of women she knows that hasnt been on it at some point. Some women she knows were on it for years as Babychams mum was. My dads Grandma was on it for many years and she went into a very deep depression when she came off them.

I remember my dad having one of his (many) rants about "THEM". This one was about why they took so long to release new drugs that could change peoples lives, why did they have to go over the top on testing. I loved mum so much when she said "Two Words. Thalidomide. Valium". Needless to say he stfu and never had that particular rant again.

Happyhippy45 · 19/03/2017 21:21

Everyday's a school day as the say. I didn't know that what how gin got that name! whiskytangofoxtrot

Yes, babycham Valium it seems is prescribed just as often nowadays for everything.....but known by its generic name of diazepam.....I got prescribed it for pain......I felt just lovely.....a bit too lovely........and in a little less pain.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/03/2017 21:21

Sorry that should be my grandma, or my dads mum, not my dads grandma!

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/03/2017 21:23

I had valium/diazapam for back pain as it was in spasm and the diazapam is a muscle relaxant. I was given 5 days worth with the advice to pray that it worked because I wouldnt be getting any more.

I remember almost nothing of those 5 days. I hope that I was on a stong dose because I cant see how anyone could function on that.

BabychamSocialist · 19/03/2017 21:24

Happyhippy45

I was prescribed it when my anxiety got really bad a few years ago. GP said they still prescribe it but only short term. You won't get more than 13 weeks now, whereas they used to prescribe it as a long-term thing.

Shame really that it's so addictive, because it really does work for so many things.

Happyhippy45 · 19/03/2017 21:29

pyong I was on 2mg 4 times a day....as a muscle relaxant......not massive dose but I was away with the fairies and felt lovely. Easy to see how it can become habit forming.

GinSwigmore · 19/03/2017 21:30

Erm...looks at own username....Blush
But in my defence I love Gin Wigmore, love her
I just thought Swigmore was decent punnery

Happyhippy45 · 19/03/2017 21:31

babycham I suffer from anxiety too but side effects from everything I've tried prevent me from continuing with them.
Valium worked. I got a nice wee break from anxiety....was just a pity I was in too much pain to appreciate it!
is now wondering what a combination of gin and Valium would be like

anothermalteserplease · 19/03/2017 21:32

I've loved gin for years. I remember people used to turn their nose up at it and mock me for drinking gin on a night out. Same people have jumped on the bandwagon and inviting me to gin bars and gin tasting nights. Really bugs me for some reason. They were all on the prosecco bandwagon a while back so no real surprise.

Thinkingblonde · 19/03/2017 21:35

Gin is not juniper flavoured vodka.

Babycham was the drink of the 60's
Followed by Blue Nun in the 70's
Followed by Cava
Followed by Martini
Followed by Vodka
Followed by Prosseco
Now Gin.
I hate Gin.

AbernathysFringe · 19/03/2017 21:37

Yes! I don't feel that I qualify as a middle-aged woman due to not liking gin, Tom Hardy or chicklit. Meh.
Also all the 'Keep Calm' crap.
Food fairs and any local event are full of variations on the gin and cupcake theme. I don't mind the cupcakes, but I'm not going to start baking or watching baking. Mary Berry eating is not a sight I can unsee.

Natsku · 19/03/2017 21:38

I've been often prescribed something similar to valium (same category but slightly better tolerated) and does make life a more pleasant haze!

Renaissance2017 · 19/03/2017 21:39

Happyhppiy45 and Whiskyfoxtrottango

Valium was referred to as Mothers Little Helper. I think the Rolling Stones reference it in one of their songs.

I always think of Gin Alley too...

Natsku · 19/03/2017 21:40

I first started drinking gin and tonic at a friend's 18th birthday party where we laughed at a friend who ordered the 'old lady's drink' and discovered its deliciousness. Nowadays I like though to have gin with a cucumber flavoured fizzy water type thing, its really nice.

charlotteswigwam · 19/03/2017 21:41

The main reason that gin is flavored "with herbs and shit" is not to distinguish it from vodka but because in the 18th century (the good old days) it was made from the scraggiest bits of old corn etc that couldn't be made into bread/ beer and there was no real regulation of the distilling process so it could be up to 80%proof and contain anything really. (The idea for juniper flavoring however was nicked from the Dutch). Hence why people got wasted on it and dropped their babies of stair cases etc a la Hogarth.
